Hrdinová, Dana ; Šafařík, Petr (advisor) ; Klvaňa, Tomáš (referee)
The bachelor thesis "The media image of the presidential candidate Donald Trump in 2016" deals with the presentation of Donald Trump on the front pages of Rzeczepospolita and The Times. The work is time-bound between 1 February and 30 November 2016, that is, from the start of the US primaries to the presidential election, incl. the period immediately following the election. The aim of the thesis is on the base on the verification of the established hypotheses to introduce the elements that were part of Donald Trump's media image, presented by Rzeczpospolita and The Times. When verifying the hypotheses, the theoretical starting points of the concept of the agenda setting and their framing are used. The first part of the thesis deals with the theoretical definition of media studies, mass media research and the US political system. It follows the research part - the quantitative image analysis and the qualitative discourse analysis. Primary sources of the analysis are the front pages of The Times and Rzeczpospolita. Based on this analysis, conclusions are worked out.
The percetion of equality in the US
Černochová, Johana ; Hornát, Jan (advisor) ; Klvaňa, Tomáš (referee)
This thesis analyses the perception of equality in the United States in the context of today's high economic inequality. The main characteristic feature of this perception is the emphasis on the equality of opportunity. According to this ideal, America is the land of equal opportunity to achieve success, which depends on hard work and talent, not on family wealth. This concept is often considered as the opposite of the so-called equality of outcomes, which demands more even distribution of wealth, and which is usually perceived as foreign to American values. However, the large economic inequality, which is even much higher in America than in other advanced countries, has provably negative impacts on the general possibility of fair equal opportunity. Hence, the aim of this thesis is to verify the assumption that in the context of today's high and rising economic inequality, these negative impacts on the real state of equal opportunity must also find expression in the actual American perception of equality. Based on the analysis of an extensive set of public opinion surveys, it concludes that a certain change in the perception takes place. The emphasis on the equality of opportunity is still crucial, but the findings of the thesis do not support the notion that larger equality of outcomes is...
Violation of human rights within the American War on Terror: Case study Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib
Žižková, Andrea ; Čížek, Martin (advisor) ; Klvaňa, Tomáš (referee)
The principle aim of my work titled "Violations of human rights within the American War on Terror: A case study of Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib" is an attempt to show that violations of human rights, in prisons built by the United States for suspected terrorists, were not only committed by a number of lower-ranked soldiers, but by the American government, who provided suitable conditions for such practices. By becoming familiar with the basic principles of international treaties and agreements covering human rights and the rights of prisoners, as well as by examining American orders and memoranda after September 11th, this paper introduces the environment in which the controversial actions against prisoners could have arisen. Practices that violate international principles are explored in two main chapters, derived from the prisons in which they were committed. A separate section is also dedicated to the status of enemy combatant, which the United States decided to use to label all captured members of Al-Qaeda and the Taliban, thus denying them due process under the Geneva Conventions. Together with all these aspects the paper provides a perspective on the difficulties of prisoners' legal rights during a unique security conflict, which the War on Terror following September 11th, 2001 undoubtedly is.
NRA influence on D.C. v. Heller decision
Bastlová, Renée ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Klvaňa, Tomáš (referee) ; Pondělíček, Jiří (referee)
This bachelor thesis adresses the issue of a landmark case from 2008 which dealt with the city's gun ban and in which for the first time in the history of the Second Amendment was decided in favor of an individual right to bear arms, specifically for the purpose of self-defense. The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution reads "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." There are two possible ways to interpret this amendment. One side of the argument maintains that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms. The other maintains that it guarantees a right to bear arms just in connection with militia. NRA, one of the most powerful lobby groups in the USA, promotes the individual right to bear arms. As a part of my thesis I analyze methods of NRA's lobbying. The thesis examines to what extent did the Supreme Court of the United States and its justices copy thoughts of the NRA in this case. The goal of this thesis is to show similarity between the NRA's and Court's arguments with the help of long-term views and opinions of this organization that can be seen in the Amicus Curiae Brief. According to my analysis, the NRA is not the reason the case was born. However,...
Wall Construction on U.S.-Mexican Border during the first two years of the Trump administration: political rhétoric and reality
Křížková, Marie ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Drhlíková, Eva (referee) ; Klvaňa, Tomáš (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the problem of building a wall on the US-Mexican border during two years of Donald Trump's presidency (January 20, 2017 - January 20, 2019). In particular, it analyzes the rhetoric of Trump's promise to build a wall and compares it to the reality of the US-Mexican border. The thesis finds out why the reality at the border after two years does not correspond to the previous rhetoric, to what extent these promises have been fulfilled and to what problems the construction of the border wall has encountered. The biggest problem was the financing of the wall, when Congress refused to approve the money and this escalating situation led to a shutdown. It is extremely important for Democrats, with Nancy Pelosi and Charles Schumer, that they stayed together in the shutdown and showed how hard it would be for Trump to reach his plan. Eight wall prototypes were built on the border in 2017 for testing. No wall based on these prototypes has been built or funded by Congress to date. On the contrary, in February 2019 they were demolished and removed.

Analysis of Donald J. Trump's twitter campaign during 2016 US presidential election
Neumahr, Martin ; Klvaňa, Tomáš (advisor) ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (referee)
In the first part of the thesis, I will generally introduce marketing to the meaning of US candidates or their electoral teams in the US presidential election in 2016, describe the negative campaign in political marketing, and explain how important part of the US presidential election was Twitter. The second part of the thesis aims to analyze the campaign of the Republican Party candidate in more detail. On a sample of 1458 twitter posts, I will examine whether and how Donald Trump used a negative campaign against his rival candidate Hillary Clinton and also to assess the extent to which his false claims had changed over his campaign in three specific topics. The thesis examines the period from the nomination congress on 18 July 2016 to 8 November 2016, when the US presidential elections were held. At the end of my work, I will try to answer the research questions.
Genealogy of Liberalism in America.
Váňa, Filip ; Klvaňa, Tomáš (advisor) ; Calda, Miloš (referee)
In this work I examine the notion that various, both past and present conceptions of liberalism in America share a commitment to identical fundamental values, as well as utilize a characteristic method of political philosophy, that can both be traced to the rationalist thought of the period known as the Enlightenment. However, because of its ever-changing constitutive setting and different understandings of the term, the meaning of liberalism can be often dark and its usage confusing. Therefore I find it necessary to approach this work as an investigation of a complex (and extremely influential) phenomenon in time. I argue that throughout most of the history of the American republic, it has been exactly this forward-looking, revolutionary, rationalist tradition of liberalism, that has gradually come to dominate not just American politics, but also the social and even the private lives of the American people. Based on the examinations of the different "genealogical branches" of liberalism, I make the case that even though we often imagine the prominent conflict between the American "conservatives" and "liberals" as a struggle of two categorically opposed worldviews, underneath their political agendas we find the same set of goals. And while both sides try to achieve them by their own, often...
