Kateřina Stará Abstract This Bachelor's thesis consists of my translation of a German text into Czech and scholarly commentary evaluating said translation. The subject text of my translation is a report written by Jonas Lüth in 2020, titled Tschechien und seine Deutschen - was ist geblieben? It talks about the history of Germans in Czechia and how it reflects in the present. The goal of this work was to fulfil a made-up order and provide translation to the Municipal Museum of Ústí nad Labem, specifically for their website advertising an exhibition focused on the same topic. The scholarly commentary consists of translation analysis following Christiane Nord's model, translation method, shifts, and issues I have encountered during my study.
Human and Machine Translation of Children's Literature: Quality Assessment of Translations from German into Czech
Nováková, Anna ; Kloudová, Věra (advisor) ; Svoboda, Tomáš (referee)
This thesis deals with quality assessment of machine and human translation of children's and young people's literature from German into Czech. The subject of the thesis is the translation quality assessment of selected excerpts from the book Die unendliche Geschichte (1979) by German writer Michael Ende. The aim is to compare outputs from three machine translation systems (DeepL, Google Translate and CUBBITT) with one another and with translations by Milada Misárková (1987) and Eva Pátková (2001). The theoretical part deals first with the original text and its published Czech translations, then with the history and current state of machine translation, selected machine translation systems, the definition of translation quality and quality assessment of machine translation. The empirical part of the thesis consists of a translatological analysis of three excerpts and of a manual assessment of these passages provided by annotators from among the students of the Institute of Translation Studies FF UK.

The Life in the German Democratic Republic: The Czech Translation of Culture-Specific Items in the Work of Thomas Brussig
Chlum, Michael ; Kloudová, Věra (advisor) ; Winter, Astrid (referee)
The theoretical-empirical thesis focuses on the translation of cultural specificity, using the work of the German writer Thomas Brussig. The primary source chosen is the author's novel Am kürzeren Ende der Sonnenallee, set in the GDR, as well as its Czech translation, Na kratším konci ulice, by translator Jana Zoubková. Incorporating translatological, socio-cultural, historical, linguistic and literary aspects, the theoretical section summarizes the relevant knowledge about cultural specificity and its translation, life in the GDR, socialist Czechoslovakia, as well as the author himself and his work. The main subject of the empirical part, which includes a literary analysis of the novel, is a translatological analysis, the focus of which is the translation of culture-specific items. The aim of the thesis is, among other things, to find out how cultural and historical specificity are translated between two cultures with a similar past. Keywords: cultural specificity, cultural and historical specificity, culture-specific items, translatological analysis, Ostalgie, Wendeliteratur, Thomas Brussig, German Democratic Republic, Czechoslovak Socialist Republic
Selected Aspects of Linguistic Analysis of the Source Text from the Perspective of Human Simultaneous Interpreting and Automated Simultaneous Translation from English into Czech
Purchartová, Petra ; Kloudová, Věra (advisor) ; Ešnerová, Kateřina (referee)
This interdisciplinary thesis focuses on linguistic features that might potentially cause problems both for human simultaneous interpreting and spoken language translation. The thesis also compares these features with actual human interpreting. The aim of the theoretical part is to define terminology, describe existing research and outline main bases of natural language processing, translation studies and linguistics. The theoretical outline then determines the second, empirical part of the thesis. The empirical part also uses a primary data source - a data corpus of European Parliament speeches, that were segmented into minimal translation units and translated during a student research project at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University. The empirical part is overall based on qualitative analysis of the annotated English source texts and actual interpreting into Czech, and tries to identify the most problematic linguistic features. The findings of the analysis together with the theory of translation then offer possible solutions for the spoken language translation technology.
