Collective memory and Nigerian Civil War in Nigerian diaspora in Dublin

1 Annotation The topic of this thesis is the collective memory of the Nigerian Civil War among people living in the Nigerian diaspora in the Irish capital Dublin. The author examines in a sample of 19 people of Nigerian descend how respondents form their individual memories within a broader collective memory in the diaspora. Respondents are divided into groups based on two parameters. The first is their ethnic-regional origin in Nigeria and the second is whether they belong to the first or second generation of immigrants in Ireland. Primary data is collected by using the structured interview method with open-ended questions. The method of comparative qualitative content analysis is used to process the data. All the while the author considers the two levels of distinction in the respondent groups. The thesis is theoretically based on theories of memory, specifically collective memory. Furthermore, the concept of the diaspora outlines the topic theoretically as well. The aim of the work is to find out what factors influence the formation of individual memories and how the collective memories of groups of respondents differ based on the above-mentioned division. Learning Curve of the Conditionality of the EU's Enlargement Policy - the Role of the "Good Neighborhood Principle" in the Case of Border Disputes.

DP JANA LIPSKÁ Abstract The thesis examines the policy of good neighborliness as one of the conditions for the accession of (Balkan) countries to the EU. As it is an unanchored concept, the thesis should focus on its development and the possibility of its enforcement as a conditionality. It is its enforceability that the EU has at least partially achieved after the enlargement to Croatia in 2013, or by modifying the conditionality in 2018, when the settlement of bilateral disputes became a condition for the admission of the new state. This paper explains this change in conditionality and what led EU officials to make it. The EU has also changed its role in these disputes. It has moved from being an active mediator to a passive position from which it primarily motivates the parties involved in the dispute to resolve it. The EU demonstrates its role as a normative power, which is what it uses conditionality for. The basic premise is that previously the EU has tried to intervene more and resolve such disputes, while at the same time it accepted states that have not resolved them. Volt Europa: A New Kind of European Political Party?

Alongside the process of European integration in a large number of policy areas, scholars have also observed political integration in the EC/EU. The major European political parties, or Europarties, were founded by and subjected to their constituent member parties, not their individual members - many of them do not even offer individual membership. This is why the Europarties are described as "parties of parties". Throughout time, there have been attempts at establishing grassroots pan-European parties. The most notable contemporary examples are DiEM25 and Volt Europa. The aim of this thesis is to understand whether the self-presentation of Volt as "the first pan-European party" is in fact reflected in its internal structure and whether it is different from the "classical" "parties of parties". The typologies of vertical party organization developed by Maurice Duverger served as a framework for this thesis. Using thematic analysis, I studied the statutes of Volt and some of its branches. This was complemented by semi-structured interviews with some of the party members. Parliament of the Czech Republic and Scrutiny of European Legislative Process

Aim of this Diploma Thesis is to have a closer look at current powers of National Parliaments of the Member States to influence legislative process of the European Union. The main question is how do National Parliaments control legislative process in practise. Theoretical Framework is based on a debate about Democratic Legitimacy of the European Union. First the term needs to be defined and basic arguments about the (non)existence of Democratic deficit need to be introduced, then the research question can be introduced. The main focus is on Early Warning Mechanism and a process of issueing of reasoned opinions. An assumption is that through a process of issueing those reasoned opinions by National Parliaments that consist of a democratic elected political parties a Democratic Legitimacy of the European Union could be strenghtened. It is a one-case study of Czech Parliament. All the reasoned opinions, that Czech Senate and Czech Chamber of Deputies issued, will be analysed.

Internal structure of Europarties since 2004

Presented thesis is focusing on the dependence and relationship between Europarties and groups of the European Parliament and Europarties and national parties. The research is carried out on five Europarties: European People's Party (EPP), the Social Democratic Party (PES), the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), the European Green Party (EGP) and the Party of the European Left (PEL) in the period 2004-2013 and it focuses on three areas: Europarties' financing, its leadership and autonomy in decision making. It presents several conclusions. Since 2004 Europarties became independent on the EP groups and more independent on the national parties in the area of financing in connection with the Regulation No. 2004/2003 regulating financing while their resources have been growing. On the other hand, all three organizational structures are still involved in the decision making as is shown on the example of nominations and subsequent elections of the so-called Spitzenkandidaten (candidates for the President of the European Commission) and the hierarchy within the European party families is similar to the hierarchy of its member parties. 1981 Irish Hunger Strike in Cinema

The hunger strike of Irish republican prisoners in 1981 that was held in Maze/Long Kesh prison in Northern Ireland was the culmination of a protest against the abolition of Special Category Status for convicted paramilitary prisoners. Ten men starved themselves to death. The events related to the hunger strike are not forgotten to this day and still arouse disputes in the society. This thesis focuses on the analysis of popular feature films whose main theme is the hunger strike in Northern Ireland. On a theoretical level, the thesis uses the concept of collective memory which is described in more detail and applied to the issues of cinema in the first part of the thesis. The second chapter briefly presents historical context: the hunger strike itself and also its legacy today. The last and the most important part of the text deals with three movies, namely Some Mother's Son (1996), H3 (2001) and Hunger (2008) which are compared with regard to the origin of their authors, the selection of specific aspects of the historical events and time of their creation. Besides a summary of the main findings, there is also an outline of how filmmakers generally work with the theme of hunger strike in the conclusion.
