Political caricature in the Czech press between 1945 and 1948
Pallendal, Pavel ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
The aim of this diploma thesis is the comparison between cartoons published in two wide-nation newspapers by examples of major political events in Czechoslovakia between 1945 - 1948. In order to achieve this objective I used a comparative-historical method. I deliberately worked with issues that had divided the public and political representation. I focused on inequality in the way of exposing and selection of the content of cartoons. The Selection of newspapers was not random, because representativeness was my main criterion. Svobodné slovo was based on the tradition of the party list and its contents were corrected by the party leadership of the Czechoslovak National Socialist Party, which formed together with the Czechoslovak People's Party internal opposition to the Czechoslovak Communist Party in the National Front. Daily Práce was a new paper which represented the views of the Central Council of Trade Unions, which were initially under the strong influence of the Communists. Práce belonged to a wide block of the media who supported the policy of the Communists. I have divided the referenced period 1945 - 1948 into three consecutive time-related phases. I defined the first section with year 1945. For this period enthusiasm stemming from the liberation from Nazi and the belief in a better...

Beginnings of czech sport journalism at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. Sport as a part of czech press.
Lukšů, David ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Waic, Marek (referee) ; Sekot, Aleš (referee)
This dissertation is the very first scholarly text to bring a wider perspective on the genesis of Czech sport journalism, starting with its beginnings in the latter half of the 1800's and extending to the year of 1918, when this profession became an independent branch of the newspaper business. Given the paucity of original literature, the present work is based primarily on the study of period newspapers and archival materials, employing mainly the direct and the indirect methods of historiography. The main purpose of it was to describe the formation of the discipline of sport journalism in the broader context of the Czech society, sports and media, rather than regarding it as an independent, isolated process. The constituent parts of this dissertation, which renders the dawn of Czech sport journalism, include the most important titles of the day as well as the key personalities in the publishing and journalism of the period, the issue of sport reportage within the established political press, and also the genesis of the professions of sport journalist and sport photographer. The chapters that place the main theme within a wider historical context compare the brief description of the evolution of sport journalism in the Czech lands to the origins of sport journalism in other countries (Great Britain, USA,...
Women's Columns in 1920's Newspaper and their Authors: Olga Fastrová, Marie Fantová, Milena Jesenská, Staša Jílovská and Zdena Wattersonová
Penkalová, Lenka ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Burešová, Jana (referee) ; Mocná, Dagmar (referee)
In my doctoral thesis I decided to explore a genre of so called women's columns, specialized newspaper sections which were created to satisfy namely female audiences. First women's columns appeared in the end of 19th century in the United States and quickly became very popular. Although newspaper writing for women was a significant phenomenon of popular culture during the first decades of 20th century, czech media historians have so far payed almost no attention to this quite interesting topic. Because of the lack of information about constitution, development and characteristics of women's columns in czechoslovak newspaper after 1918 I focused on basic research of selected czech dailies (Lidové noviny, Národní listy, Tribuna, Národní politika, Prager Presse) and tried to follow how these newspapers formed and operated pages meant for female readers. Specifically I studied contents, layout, typography, style and authors of czech women's columns in the chosen period (1918-1930). My aim was to show that women's columns were important both for editors and for readers and that main authors of those columns (characterized in five biographical chapters) considerably took part on discussion about lifestyle, family and gender issues of the time.

English abstract The use of propaganda and methods of governing and regulation of the regional press in Czechoslovakia during 1948-1956 (using the example of the guidelines of KV and OV KSČ and the region around Liberec) The presented study follows the development of censorship and the methods of media and press control in Czechoslovakia from 1948 to1953, and in particular during 1956. This study focuses mainly on the methods and processes used by the Czechoslovak Communist Party to dominate the media and how it concentrated namely on the relationship between local and regional media and the centralized governance under the powerful influence of the Czechoslovak Communist Party. After February of 1948, the mass media in Czechoslovakia took on a different role than the one it had up until that time. Even so, up until 1953, there was no official censorship office and the media fell under the jurisdiction of the Party apparatus, or alternately under the Ministries of Education, Science and Arts or Information, which accordingly managed and influenced media content. However, it was still under the curatorship of the UV Czechoslovak Communist Party, as the following work will show. As will also be shown, after February of 1948 the Communist Party was unable to gain influence over society at various levels and...
Broadcast Policy in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia: Power Structures, Programming, Collaboration and Resistance at Czech Radio 1939 to 1945
Pinard, Peter Richard ; Kučera, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Köpplová, Barbara (referee) ; Kutsch, Arnulf (referee)
What radio policy did the Nazi authorities implement in the so-called Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia? What were the possibilities of collaboration or, conversely, of Czech resistance within Czech Radio. What impact did the situation have on programming and on mutual relations between Czechs and Germans within this institution? Based largely on archival sources and an analysis of radio program schedules, this study seeks to answer those questions. The author pays special attention to political, anti-Semitic, Worker's Radio and political satire programming. The main findings of the study are that the occupation authorities implemented a range of policies starting with passive censorship of Czech-made programming and increasing over time to active production of German-inspired programs. Initially, an unqualified bureaucrat named Lothar Scurla led the occupation team supported by Sudeten-German Czech Radio staff. Czech staff reacted successfully to this manipulation with passive resistance. After taking charge in Prague, Reinhard Heydrich removed Scurla and more qualified German radio professionals took control under the leadership of the SS-Obersturmführer Ferdinand Thürmer. The new team gradually increased the quantity of factual programming while decreasing overtly political program content at...

Hamhalterová, Dana ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Sekera, Martin (referee)
The object of this dissertation is to describe development of the press in urban district Klatovy during 1918 - 1941 for example the weekly newspaper Šumavan. By political and social background we are going to explain development of this weekly newspaper from his beginning to his cessation and to describe character of the newspaper. We are also going to give attention to figure of a founder, an owner and an editor Maxmilián Čermák and his son Otakar Čermák. Patriotic thinking at the beginning of 60's in 19th century in Klatovy gave the incentive to foundation of the first Czech printing office in Klatovy in autumn 1867. The Czech printing office was the essential step for foundation of Czech-written periodical which would spread thoughts and interest in well-being of the whole Bohemia Forest area. To foundation and continuance of the first Czech newspapers in south-western Bohemia (except Pilsen) contributed patriotic thinking grammar school profesors and rich citizens from Klatovy who were concentrated around guild Měšťanská beseda. The weekly newspaper Šumavan was publicated during 1868 - 1941 if we don't count the last issue which was publicated on 19th May 1945 to liberation of Czechoslovakia. There were two approximately four years' intervals by reason of war censorship in the long life of the...
