Education of bilingual children in preschool years

"Education of bilingual children in preschool years" is an academic paper concerning the educational and psychological aspects in the optimal education of bilingual children and children attending nurseries in a foreign language. This kind of education originates from the mental and emotional needs of preschool children. The theoretical section concerns the psychological development of children with an emphasis on language and communication. There is the unique situation of the bilingual person in a social, cultural and political context, then there are concrete methods of bringing up a child in a bilingual family and their doubts about bilingualism. The paper desribes the eduational functions of Czech and foreign (specifically English) language nurseries and the methods of teaching preschool children. The teaching of a foreign language in nurseries is preparation for future learning of foreign languages and the challenge of exploring other cultures. The empirical section of the paper describes the results of a small inquiry, realised by observing children in one Czech and two English nurseries. It was found that in some "English nurseries" the learning of language was overemphasised to the prejudice of other psychological needs of some children. It concerned the children who had a different first language...
