This bachelor thesis consists of two main parts: the translation from English into Czech and the subsequent commentary. The text selected for translation is Michael Specter's Against the Grain, which was published on The New Yorker website and deals with gluten-free diet, a popular nutritional trend of today. The commentary includes the source text analysis, description of selected translation method and typology of translation shifts and problems.

The remaining chapters describe the translation method and discuss encountered translation problems as well as translation shifts.
Translation Ethics

The topic of this thesis is translation ethics. The theoretical part provides definitions of key concepts in the field of normative ethics, as well as an overview of the existing research into ethics in translation studies. Three possible ways of approaching this topic are presented and the main themes of translation ethics identified. The thesis then describes the history of codes of ethics with special attention to problems regarding these written ethical norms. With focus on their content, the thesis provides a detailed description of translators' individual rights and obligations, as defined in various codes of ethics, which deem a translator's behaviour ethical or unethical. The thesis also explores how translators can be affected by the unethical decisions of other people. The end of the theoretical part focuses on translation ethics in connection with CAT tools and machine translation. The empirical part analyses data collected through questionnaire research, the aim of which was to study translators' behaviour in ethically challenging situations. First, research methods and individual parts of the questionnaire are described. The bachelor thesis is comprised of two parts - the translation and the commentary on it. The first part is the translation of the original book by Paul Johnson The Little People of the British Isles, describing different species of the little people of the territory. The translation contains the main text of the book and selected sections of the glossary relevant to the text. The commentary part includes a translation analysis of the source text, an analysis of translation problems, and a typology of translation shifts. The analysis is based on Christiane Nord's model of intratextual and extratextual factors. The following part is focused on problems, shifts, and a translatology method , mainly employing the schemes by Jiří Levý and Anton Popovič. Learner Autonomy in English classes at a Czech Secondary Technical School

This dissertation explores the efficacy of the learner autonomy (LA) principles implemented in secondary technical school EFL classes through project-based units incorporated into the conventional four-year language curriculum (2011-2015). This integrated approach remains uncommon in a Czech secondary technical school, even though it suggests a teaching model that enhances ELA and increases communicative competence and motivation among learners. A mixed-method design based on longitudinal four-cycle action research and quasi-experiment approaches was selected (1) to examine the changes in self-regulation and academic achievement development over time; (2) to investigate the efficacy of autonomous projects systematically applied within the assigned treatment group (TG), and (3) to compare the results of the treatment and control groups as to their self-regulation and academic achievement development. For the quantitative strand, a structured Self-Regulation Questionnaire (SRQ-A) and a series of academic tests were administered which were consequently analysed through null hypothesis statistical testing (NHST). This bachelor thesis comprises a translation of a part of a book called Translation and Identity by Michael Cronin, published in 2006 and a commentary on the translation. The commentary includes translation analysis of the original text, examples of translation problems with solutions and typology of translation shifts. The analysis was based on the model of Ch. Nord and the translation method was inspired by translation theory of J. Levý and partly also by the theory of P. Newmark. The translation shifts were based on the theory of A. Popovič. The translated text inquires into the interconnection of the modern and constantly changing society. It looks at the understanding of the concept of cosmopolitanism throughout the history from the point of view of several cosmopolitan theories and it studies the influence the understanding has on people's behaviour. The transfer of (im)politeness in interpreting

While the linguistic concept of politeness has been thoroughly analyzed, the same does not apply to its interpreting. The present theoretical-empirical work describes the means for expressing politeness grouped by G. Leechʼs maxims of politeness. The empirical part analyzes recordings of simultaneous interpretation from media and European Parliament settings. This is a quantitative study and the outcome is the number of means for expressing politeness which the interpreters conveyed into Czech. On average and in all of the material 65,7 % of means for expressing politeness were conveyed into Czech in compliance with the maxims. The means analyzed are prosody, non-verbal communication, modality, personal reference, etc. An equivalent interpretation of means of politeness was deemed desirable. The thesis verifies the hypothesis whether the level of politeness significantly increased in comparison with the original speeches. Subtitling in Live Theatre Performances

The thesis is concerned with the little explored phenomenon of subtitling of live theatre broadcasts. Its aim is to describe the subtitling practice and the outer process of the translation, to determine the translation norms applied in this domain and to monitor reception of the final product. The descriptive thesis explores the translation practice of the NT Live series, which is one of a kind in the Czech Republic. Several case studies help to explore the reception and translation norms. The research makes use of both qualitative methods, such as semi- structured interview and comparative translation analysis, and quantitative methods, such as standardized questionnaire. The results are interpreted with regard to theoretical findings of translation studies in areas related to the subtitling of live theatre broadcasts. The thesis concludes that the client's requirements are minimal and the norms are gradually established by the subtitlers themselves, or adopted from television subtitling practice. Although the live cuing of the subtitles is an inseparable part of the translation process, there is little cooperation between the subtitlers and those who cue subtitles during the broadcast. Peter Newmark and his Contribution to Translation Studies

The present theoretical and biographical thesis deals with the work of Peter Newmark, a prominent Translation Studies scholar. The thesis is based on an analysis of Newmark's monographs and papers and identifies key ideas which constitute his contribution to the development of Translation Studies. Given the context of his time, with the Western world being dominated by neopositivism, Newmark's approach was not in line with the mainstream. The thesis also tries to take into account the chronological development of Newmark's ideas and highlight some ideas from more recent papers, the reception of which was rather limited. Furthermore, the thesis presents the reception of Newmark's ideas and the most important critical responses to them.
