The core of the bachelor's thesis is a Czech translation of the article Native American Systems of Knowledge by C. S. Kidwell published in 2002 as a chapter of A Companion to American Indian History. The second part is constituted by the commentary of the translation including the original text analysis, description of the translation method, translation problems typology along with their solutions and typology of the translation shifts. The analysis uses the model of Ch. Nord and constitutes the basis for the translation method. The further chapters deal with lexical, syntactical and presuposition problems and describe shifts that occured during the process. The commentary includes conrete examples of solutions and shifts.
Anton Popovič and his contribution to the development of translation studies

This theoretic-historiographical thesis deals with the personality of the Slovak scholar Anton Popovič (1933-1984) and his contribution to translation studies between the late 1960s the early 1980s. The thesis examines the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of Popovič's theoretical work (especially Jiří Levý and František Miko), analyzes his most important publications within the field of translation studies, and discusses criticisms as well as inspirations of his conception of translation. The thesis concludes with an evaluation of Popovič's role in developing Czechoslovak and international translation studies, most importantly of the so-called descriptive translation studies, or the manipulation school. The contribution of this thesis may be regarded primarily as a first attempt at a comprehensive study of the personality and thinking of Anton Popovič.

The thesis consists of a Czech translation of the first chapter, Introductory: Language Defined, from Language: An Introduction to the Study of Speech (New York: 1921, Harcourt, Brace and Company) by Edward Sapir and of a commentary on the translation. The commentary consists of a translation analysis of the source text, typology of translation problems and their solutions, and typology of translation shifts. The translation method was chosen based on the analysis, which was based on the method of Ch. Nord. The main objective of the translation was to preserve the informative function of the source text and it's style with regard to the documentary function of the translation and the conventions and constraints of the target language.
Learner Autonomy in English classes at a Czech Secondary Technical School

This dissertation explores the efficacy of the learner autonomy (LA) principles implemented in secondary technical school EFL classes through project-based units incorporated into the conventional four-year language curriculum (2011-2015). This integrated approach remains uncommon in a Czech secondary technical school, even though it suggests a teaching model that enhances ELA and increases communicative competence and motivation among learners. A mixed-method design based on longitudinal four-cycle action research and quasi-experiment approaches was selected (1) to examine the changes in self-regulation and academic achievement development over time; (2) to investigate the efficacy of autonomous projects systematically applied within the assigned treatment group (TG), and (3) to compare the results of the treatment and control groups as to their self-regulation and academic achievement development. For the quantitative strand, a structured Self-Regulation Questionnaire (SRQ-A) and a series of academic tests were administered which were consequently analysed through null hypothesis statistical testing (NHST). This bachelor thesis comprises a translation of a part of a book called Translation and Identity by Michael Cronin, published in 2006 and a commentary on the translation. The commentary includes translation analysis of the original text, examples of translation problems with solutions and typology of translation shifts. The analysis was based on the model of Ch. Nord and the translation method was inspired by translation theory of J. Levý and partly also by the theory of P. Newmark. The translation shifts were based on the theory of A. Popovič. International magazines and journals (National Geographic and Reader'sDigest) launched at the Czech market: transfer strategies and processes

This study has aimed at describing the strategies and processes that apply during the introduction of international magazines to the Czech market. We have chosen the well-known and widely read, truly international magazines National Geographic and Reader's Digest as our material. We have focused on the role of these magazines in the interaction of cultures (Czech and American). We have realized that this area of translatological knowledge has not yet been analysed thoroughly enough. There are only a few studies, only one of them concerning one of these magazines (Reader's Digest). This study (Robyns 1994) suggests that Reader's Digest disseminates (American) ideology and at the same time constructs a certain homogeneous world. We have intended to find out if this was true about Reader's Digest and also National Geographic in the Czech Republic. Basically two theoretical sources have been chosen. One of them was "the Manipulation School" which states that: "Translation is […] a rewriting of an original text. […] Rewriting is manipulation, undertaken in service of power." Lefevere (1992: vii). Subtitling in Live Theatre Performances

The thesis is concerned with the little explored phenomenon of subtitling of live theatre broadcasts. Its aim is to describe the subtitling practice and the outer process of the translation, to determine the translation norms applied in this domain and to monitor reception of the final product. The descriptive thesis explores the translation practice of the NT Live series, which is one of a kind in the Czech Republic. Several case studies help to explore the reception and translation norms. The research makes use of both qualitative methods, such as semi- structured interview and comparative translation analysis, and quantitative methods, such as standardized questionnaire. The results are interpreted with regard to theoretical findings of translation studies in areas related to the subtitling of live theatre broadcasts. The thesis concludes that the client's requirements are minimal and the norms are gradually established by the subtitlers themselves, or adopted from television subtitling practice. Although the live cuing of the subtitles is an inseparable part of the translation process, there is little cooperation between the subtitlers and those who cue subtitles during the broadcast. Harry Potter in Czech : Official and Fan Versions

The thesis looks at fan translation of fiction, a phenomenon that, unlike fan translation of anime and videogames, has been mostly overlooked by translation studies until recently. More specifically, we examine fan translations of Harry Potter books. The thesis aims to address a wide range of aspects pertaining to fan translation of fiction. In the opening chapters, it gives a brief overview of the history of fan translation in general and of research papers dedicated to the subject. Based on comparison with fan translations of anime and videogames, the thesis defines functions of fan translations of fiction in relation to official translations. The phenomenon of fan translation of fiction is then set in a wider context, one chapter detailing its relation to fan communities and one addressing the question of copyright. The nature of fan translations of fiction is further explored through comparison with official translations, which in this particular case focuses on Czech translations of Harry Potter books. Comparison of students' performance at the beginning and upon completion of their simultaneous interpretation training course

The thesis aims to di scover any possible relat ionships between the capaci ty of working memory and the abi l i ty to interpret features of modal i ty. Based on this aim, the basic concepts determining the approach to the above quest ion are out l ined (working memory, modal i ty) . An experiment is conducted which on a populat ion of nine subject s invest igates the development of the capacity of working memory (memory span test ) and the abi l i ty to interpret features of modal i ty during the course of interpretat ion t raining (simul taneous interpretat ion of an Engl ish text wi th high incidence of modal i ty). On a populat ion of three subjects a fol low-up experiment invest igates the capaci ty of working memory and the abi l i ty to interpret features of modal i ty of experienced interpreters. Based on an analysis, evaluat ion and stat ist ical processing of the experimental resul ts, the thesis determines that working memory capaci ty and the abil i ty to interpret features of modal i ty may be related.
