Computer games - a phenomenon in translation
Wicha, Lukáš ; Jettmarová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Švelch, Jaroslav (referee)
The topic of computer/video games and their translation has only recently attracted attention of translation scholars. The thesis aims at introducing the phenomenon as a legitimate topic of translation studies, presenting it as a specific and influential medium with an extensive user subculture. A description of the overall process of game localization, and specifically its practice in the Czech Republic are included. Lexical analysis of selected computer game reviews and online discussions is complemented with a questionnaire survey to reveal if and how computer games and game- focused articles influence the constitution of a characteristic sociolect and its usage outside the gamer subculture. Concepts used in intercultural and interlingual transfer of computer games are defined and compared with established terms in translation studies. A comparative analysis of original and Czech versions of two computer games is carried out to identify translation methods used in the transfer of culture- and language-specific elements in order to determine whether the process of computer game translation exhibits any specific features that may justify the introduction of new terms into translation studies. Specific features of computer games in translation are described and an analysis of several games...
Differentiation of characters in translated TV series
Matocha, Čeněk ; Jettmarová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Josek, Jiří (referee)
In my thesis I compare the Czech dubbed version of an American TV series with its original version and explore the differences in predisposition for viewers' concretization of social and ethnic background of the characters. In the beginning of the theoretical part I present basic information about The Nanny (Czech: Chůva k pohledání), the sitcom I chose to analyze in the empirical part of my thesis. I then proceed to sum up some basic ideas relevant to my task, especially a number of observations about the theory of audiovisual texts and their translation, the practice of dubbing in the Czech Republic, and specific features of sitcom as a subgenre of the TV series genre. Then I describe the Character Genesis model by Jiří Levý, the concept of Stylistic Equivalence and Shifts of Expression by Anton Popovič, and the System of Expression by František Miko. These are the cornerstones of my analytical model, which I use in the empirical part of my thesis. In the end of the theoretical part I outline the language situation of English and Czech and attempt to present an inventory of linguistic structures that can indicate the social and ethnic background of the person that uses them. In the empirical part I first present and describe my analytical model, define social background and ethnic background as aspects of...
Translation standards in amateur and professional feature film subtitling
Hnyk, Tomáš ; Jettmarová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Švelch, Jaroslav (referee)
This thesis focuses on translation norms of professional and amateur film subtitles. Adopting a descriptive approach, it first tries to establish recommended and actual technical and linguistic norms of translated film subtitles. Then, based on 109 films and corresponding 133 amateur and 101 professional subtitles, it quantitatively investigates which technical norms are actually upheld. The result is that actual technical norms of both groups are markedly different from the recommended ones and also slightly different from each other. Last, it qualitatively compares one amateur and one professional subtitles. Keywords: audiovisual translation, subtitling, amateur translation, fansubbing, translation norms 1
Czech translation of dialects in feature films and TV series
Nováčková, Michala ; Jettmarová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Josek, Jiří (referee)
The thesis studies Czech dubbing of Misfits and Futurama TV series with special attention to the method of translation of regional varieties of English. The first part summarizes the latest theoretical approach to translation of marginal varieties in dubbing and literature. This overview is followed by an analysis of language varieties used in the original series and their dubbed versions in order to define their role and function. The second part of the thesis examines decision-making processes employed in the process of translation of the regional varieties and presents the results of a survey of spectators' opinion on the translation method employed. Based on the survey results we compared spectators' evaluation of the original series with their evaluation of the dubbed versions, as well as markings of characters using regional varieties with markings of those using standard language. Last but not least, markings of the dubbed versions in the regions where the variety in question is spoken were compared with markings of these versions in the rest of the Czech Republic. The aim of the comparisons was to get an overview of recipients' opinions on the method of translation applied.

Adaptation of television advertising for the Czech market. The adaptation process and the role of the translator
Kuncová, Romana ; Jettmarová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Dolanský, Pavel (referee)
The target if this diploma thesis is to broaden the knowledge relating to the process of adapting advertisements for the Czech market. The objective is to provide a simultaneous description and analysis of both the relevant linguistic and socio-cultural aspects. To achieve this, we have described and analysed six television advertisements, drawn up the communication scheme ofthe main participants in the adaptation proces s and defined the position and role of the translator and the prevalent and marginal translational norms for this type of message. In this study, we have used a broad definition of culture as one of the most significant factors influencing the process of advertisement adaptation and the activities of all the participants in the communication scheme. In order to answer these questions, we have carried out a qualitative empirical study based on indirect observation in the form of interviews with account managers working in intemational advertising agencies on the Czech market, and on semiotic and translatological analysis of the relevant television advertisements in their original and adapted forms. The interviews were semistructured with open questions. The findings of this study contribute to knowledge of this process from the translatological point of view. We have found that the prevalent...

Peter Newmark and his Contribution to Translation Studies
Klabal, Ondřej ; Jettmarová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Špirk, Jaroslav (referee)
The present theoretical and biographical thesis deals with the work of Peter Newmark, a prominent Translation Studies scholar. The thesis is based on an analysis of Newmark's monographs and papers and identifies key ideas which constitute his contribution to the development of Translation Studies. Given the context of his time, with the Western world being dominated by neopositivism, Newmark's approach was not in line with the mainstream. The thesis also tries to take into account the chronological development of Newmark's ideas and highlight some ideas from more recent papers, the reception of which was rather limited. Furthermore, the thesis presents the reception of Newmark's ideas and the most important critical responses to them.
