On farm conservation of obsolete cultivars and landraces methodology

This methodology defines basic terminology connected to on-farm conservation, presents links to international agreements and legal documents and describes its participants. There are presented possible practices of conservation based on experience in Europe, especially ECPGR, FAO and international projects focused on this topic. It proposes the system of on-farm conservation in the conditions of the Czech Republic as well as possibilities of its integration to international/European networks.

Foxtail Millet (Setaria italica L. BEAUV.) suitable crop to the transformative climate in the Czech Republic

The global climate changes bring a lot of undesirable impacts which will influence the agricultural production in the Czech Republic in the future. Nowadays the drought risks and their impact on the agricultural production have begun to show up very strongly. One of the main solutions might be the breeding and selection of more resistant species or/and varieties which are more adaptable to lesser water availability and which are more resistant to the new climate. This paper would like to present the foxtail millet as a cereal which might be a valuable alternative for grain production as well as for biomass production in less favourable arid areas of our country.

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) MOENCH) and its utilization possibilities in the condition of the Czech Republic

Sorghum is one of the oldest used crops. Presently, it is one of the five most cultivated cereals in the world for human nutrition. This methodology includes a comprehensive view of sorghum cultivation and presents the newest knowledge in range from botanical taxonomy to the possibilities of utilization. In this publication, there are included not only our own results but there are also results from the world scientific publications. There are characterized selected species of sorghum suitable for different climatic conditions of the Czech Republic. There are described all aspects and procedures, which can influence the final production of selected sorghum varieties including their quality from the point of view of biogas production.
