Barbara Moser-Mercer and her Contribution to the Development of Interpreting Studies

This thesis is a descriptive theoretical study dealing with the work of the Interpreting Studies scholar, teacher and interpreter Barbara Moser-Mercer. This thesis analyses individual stages of her research and follows the development of her opinions and research interests. It looks into Moser-Mercer's dominant research areas - i.e. interpreting expertise, quality and interpreters' working conditions - and also introduces her model of interpreting and outlines its use in teaching. Furthermore, this thesis explores Moser-Mercer's teaching and interpreting projects and, last but not least, addresses her contribution to interdisciplinary cooperation. The aim of this thesis is to provide a translation of a section from The First World War by Hew Strachan, and a commentary on the translation. The commentary contains three parts. The first part is devoted to a translation analysis, which consists of an analysis of extratextual and intratextual factors, and is mainly source-text-oriented. The second part concentrates on a description of the method and typology of translation problems, which are supported by concrete examples. The commentary is concluded by a typology of translation shifts.

This Bachelor?s Thesis maps the situation in the area of activation and social activities of Czech seniors. The theoretical part deals with the problems of the aging population and with the prospects of their active social lives. The research part includes the results of the qualitative research and reflects real lives of five respondents living in southern Moravian countryside. The thesis is focused on the area of their interests, relationships to children, activity impulses, relationship to new technologies and socialization.
