The comparison of Czech and Dutch educational systems

This thesis deals with comparing the educational system in the Netherlands and the Czech Republic. It focuses mainly on mapping the current systems, their organization, structure, but also includes excursion into the history of education in both countries. The practical part describes the current projects or the projects carried out in the past in education between the twin cities (Chrudim and Ede). The aim is to analyze both systems, their common features and differences.

Use of diminutives in the internet discussions regarding the gender of the speaker

This bachelor thesis compares the use of diminutives among men and women in the computer-mediated communication. It contains a theorethical summary of basic grammatical rules regarding the formation of diminutives, the semantic aspects of their use in an informal language (with emphasis on expressivity) and an overview of the socioliguistic theories within the framework of gender differences. The research section is based on a sociolinguistic study of this particular subject. The aim is to find the most significant differences of the word choices and the frequency of use of diminutives of men and women and possibly a reason for it. Use of Loanwords in contemporary Norwegian and Dutch

The subject of the thesis is to appraise the situation of the extent and the way of use of English loanwords in Norwegian and Dutch. The issue is presented on the background of historical development of borrowing in these languages and also explained in the contemporary tendency of English words usage in non-English speaking countries. To document the official attitude of Norwegian and Dutch media to loanwords we add the results of survey among the particular editors. On the basis of loanwords principles in Norwegian and Dutch, presented in the theoretical part, we assess the English loanwords in particular articles published in Norwegian and Dutch Internet news journals. The attention is aimed to the general analysis of English loanwords in Norwegian and Dutch, to the analysis of the domains noticeably influenced by the loans and to the morphological and orthographical integration of loanwords in the monitored languages. Support of the Dutch language extra muros

(English) The aim of this bachelor thesis is to chart the functioning and working of organizations which are supporting the Dutch language outside the language territory of the Netherlands, Belgium and Suriname, thus in areas where Dutch is not the official language. Particular attention will be paid to the Dutch Language Union, which supports Dutch Studies and teaching of Dutch language around the World. I focus mainly on the functioning of this organization, its activities and projects which are supporting the Dutch language not only in Europe but also in the World. Furthermore, this thesis deals with other organizations such as the Comenius - Association for Dutch Studies in Central Europe and others. The following chapter is focused on the amount of interest in the Dutch language in the World and in the Czech Republic based on the results of international exams. I refer to this topic in the next chapter, which focuses on Dutch in the Czech Republic, study opportunities at Czech universities and interesting projects for Czech students. Because of recent changes in the Dutch Language Union, I've added a brief chapter on the current situation. Dutch compound adjectives with strengthening meaning without equivalents in Czech

(English): The topic of this bachelor thesis is Dutch compound adjectives with strengthening meaning, while this issue is considered from the point of view of a native speaker of Czech language. The author focuses primarily on the possibilities of translating this phenomenon from Dutch into Czech. Taking account of the differences between these two languages and their systems, the author will try to achieve the highest possible semantic consensus. Theoretical foundations for the research are sought in the knowledge based on morphology, word formation, semantics and translation studies. These bases are then applied in practice, to the author's own translation of a predefined group of compound adjectives with strengthening meaning. The main aim of the thesis is to assess the translatability of these adjectives into Czech and subsequently to compare the appropriateness of different translation equivalents. Aspectuality in Czech and Dutch

The thesis deals with aspectuality in Czech and Dutch. The theoretical part covers the most important widely recognized and widespread theoretical approaches to the issue. It also compares to which stream Czech and Dutch linguists tend to and how the phenomenon is discussed in grammar. The main points of the work are aspect and Aktionsart. Both of them have similar semantic features, which are the main criteria for comparison of these two typologically different languages. Both in Czech and Dutch, the perception of aspect and manner of its expression varies. The aim of this work is to bring the Czech user of Dutch options for how Czech aspectual meanings may be expressed in Dutch. The practical part contains, besides an overview of the language means, also the practical analysis of two fictional texts, which supports answering two questions. First, whether the Dutch translation preserves the concept of Czech aspectual opposites and if so, in what ways. The comparison of semantic similarity between Dutch and Czech idioms containing a part of body, focused on "hand"

(English) The aim of the thesis is ascertain and determine the level of equivalent Dutch somatic phrase units and Czech counterparts. At first the theoretical part is generally focused on a theory of phrasal idioms, the next part is dealing with phraseology such as a linguistic discipline. A following part of the thesis includes a theoretical base for dealing with an analytical part of the work which is focused on a term of equivalent. In the analytical part is used method of German linguistic Otto Kade on its base are 62 somatic phrase units with component "hand" divided into three categories. Van Dale Idioomwoordenboek (1999) is used such as primary source for a selection of phrase units which are divided according to the level of equivalence: a) full equivalent phrasal idioms, b) partly equivalent phrasal idioms c) phrasal idioms without equivalent. The result of the survey indicates a high level of a semantic equivalency, some of partial variations and concordance in a level of a structural equivalency.

The Dutch system of public libraries on a specific example

(in English) This bachelor's thesis deals with the systems of public libraries in the Netherlands and the Czech Republic. The system description considers legal framework, way to finance and description of libraries' system structures. General system description is completed with the analysis of particular libraries. Public libraries in Dronten and in Vsetín are mainly described according to the scope of their collections, number of readers and their offer of services. Both systems and both libraries are compared to each other, with the consideration of their differences in system structure and current library laws. The compartment of libraries in Dronten and in Vsetín is completed with a description of their national system's influence on their general operation. On the inherency priciple in contemporary Dutch

The purpose of this thesis is to describe the phenomenon known as the Inherency Principle in the Dutch language from the perspective of a non-native speaker. The study focuses on research and analysis of how modern journalism incorporates grammatical rules, and specifically the application of the Inherency Principle within journalistic text. The study is based on a review of several newspaper articles from a range of news categories including current affairs; culture; comment; sport etc. The structure of the sentences within these texts is critically analysed and carefully assessed to identify if the practical use of language in journalism corresponds to the rules of the Inherency Principle as defined in The Algemene Nederlandse Spraakkunst (ANS). The ANS is considered to hold some of the most important and complex grammatical functions by both expert and non-native Dutch speakers. The Inherency Principle in particular is linked to a number of issues that are explored in this paper. The second chapter of the thesis outlines the theoretical basis of the Inherency Principle using two descriptive grammatical handbooks of the Dutch language, namely Algemene Nederlandse zin, by Haeseryn et. al. from 1997, and Grammatica van de Nederlandse zin, by Vandeweghe et. al. from 2004.
