Media reflection of Yom Kippur war.
Černá, Christina ; Horák, Slavomír (advisor) ; Emler, David (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the media coverage of the Yom Kippur War and the oil shock in the newspapers Redé Právo and Mladá Fronta. The main objective is to find out how control and censorship by the Communist Party manifested itself in the coverage of the events of the Yom Kippur War and the development of foreign policy. First, based on historical research of secondary sources, I will describe the conditions that led to the war conflict and outline the key events. The thesis is based on qualitative research that combines historical context and content analysis of the identified printed materials. In the case of the content analysis, the author then used discursive analysis. The aim of this thesis is to create a comprehensive picture of the selected events of the crisis in each newspaper from October 6, 1973 to November 11, 1973. The outline thus constructed will then become the fulcrum for locating expert information from the periodicals of the time and refereeing whether they were reported truthfully and unbiasedly. The bachelor's thesis is supplemented by a discussion of Czechoslovak foreign policy towards Israel and Egypt at the time, based on the literature. The core of the thesis is the actual analysis of the overall argumentation and opinions in the texts of the time, which is...
The economic, political and social reasons of the Tulip Revolution in Kyrgyzstan in 2005
Bilinec, Vít ; Horák, Slavomír (advisor) ; Šír, Jan (referee)
The topic of the bachelor thesis is a description of the long unresolved problems that led to the emergence of the Tulip Revolution in Kyrgyzstan in 2005. This event belongs to the socalled color revolutions that took place after the collapse of the Soviet Union in successor states and whose participants used color or a flower as a symbol (Georgia, Ukraine…). The importance of the revolution lies not only in the impact on Kyrgyzstan itself, but also on the other states in the region. During the revolution, the long-standing regime of president Askar Akayev was overthrown and Kurmanbek Bakiyev was elected. The main focus of the work is to examine the various causes that directly led to the outbreak of the Tulip Revolution. Special attention is paid to the social, economic and political spheres. Within the political area, the work focuses on both national and international aspects. The president Askar Akayev, whose decision-making had a significant influence on the above-mentiones areas, has also space in this work.
Ogaden War in the Soviet Foreign Policy
Balazh, Evelina ; Horák, Slavomír (advisor) ; Kolenovská, Daniela (referee)
Thesis "Ogaden War in the Soviet Foreign Policy" aims to describe the dynamic development of Soviet foreign policy in the Horn of Africa. Its main focus is placed on the events preceding the Ogaden War between Ethiopia and Somalia as well as the war itself while attempting to clarify the circumstances that lead to the realignment of USSR's alliance from one African country to the other. Moscow's mutual relations with both governments had been complicated by various factors and therefore it had attempted to seek balance between the two adversaries. The Ogaden War itself represented a shift in the Kremlin policy towards this region. As such, this thesis seeks to explore the circumstances that had caused Moscow's support to be reoriented from a long-term ally of Somalia towards Ethiopia. In analyzing the Soviet behavior a wider context will be presented in regards to its policy in the Third World during the 1970's in the larger framework of Cold War and détente.
The Factor of Water in Central Asia
Kopajová, Zuzana ; Horák, Slavomír (advisor) ; Šír, Jan (referee)
The final thesis Factor o f Water in Central Asia presents an analysis of the phenomena of trans-boundary water interaction in the Aral Sea basin. Particular attention is given to the emerging political inter-state and regional affairs, connected to international management and security at Syr Darya and Amu Darya rivers. Global hydro-politics debates offer various theoretical frameworks of approaching the inter-state water relations. Theories such as Integrated Water Resource Management, Environmental Security and Hydro-Hegemony are explored with the ambition to find a comprehensive research background for our case studies. Thereafter, the theory is applied to the particular negotiating constellations in the Central Asian water basins. The case studies at Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers illustrate several interesting cleavages, for example between: (1) upstream and downstream riparian states; (2) irrigation and hydropower; (3) water and energy; (4) geopolitics and international law; (5) national and regional affairs. Central Asian water situation is perceived in the context of geopolitics; economic and human development; culturally-historical background and future potential challenges. Further we present, the overall tendencies in the Newly Independent States, consequences of the Aral Sea catastrophe and the...
Manas Air Base and U.S.-Kyrgyz Relations
Nováková, Sabina ; Sehnálková, Jana (advisor) ; Horák, Slavomír (referee)
The following thesis is a case study of the U.S. Manas air base in Kyrgyzstan. It addresses the significance of the base in the context of mutual U.S.-Kyrgyz relations after 2001. It aims to analyze the bilateral negotiations between the U.S. and the Kyrgyz on establishing the air base, its functioning, and eventually its closure in 2014. Among the research questions, it seeks to explain the respective positions of both parties, the motives behind their actions, and factors that influenced this negotiation process. The analysis shows that the extensive U.S. efforts to get and maintain access to the facility were driven by the necessity to secure transportation corridors to and from Afghanistan. Kyrgyzstan, on the other hand, was primarily interested in financial benefits stemming from having an American base on its territory. The U.S. let local elites enrich themselves in connection with the air base revenues. Kyrgyzstan's internal instability also had a major impact on its stance towards foreign policy matters and the issue of the Manas air base in particular. The U.S. was a stronger player in this asymmetric relationship, but Washington often got into situations where it was being pulled by Kyrgyzstan's domestic developments, which effectively determined mutual relations. The analysis concludes that...
Energy profile of the Republic of Azerbaijan: recent developments and their impact on the European Union's energy security
Hajiyev, Shahmar ; Horák, Slavomír (advisor) ; Žídková, Markéta (referee)
This thesis will focus on Azerbaijan's oil and gas industry; how the country uses its energy revenues within its economy; how it avoids economic pathologies such as the "Dutch Disease"; Azerbaijan's role within the Caspian Basin, and finally, the European Union's energy security and how Azerbaijan's energy resources can impact it. The Republic of Azerbaijan is a natural resource-rich country, and uses its energy resources as a means of socio-economic advancement and stability. Recent developments within the country's natural gas sector have allowed Azerbaijan to become a net gas exporter. The EU's growing demand for energy resources illustrates how important it is for states to have access to secure, stable, and diverse sources of energy. Energy resource exploration and the subsequent export of these products to international markets play a crucial role for the Republic of Azerbaijan's economy. Therefore, this thesis will first provide a brief evaluation of the history of Azerbaijan's energy sector; an overview of the current situation and recent developments; and explore how energy revenues are being distributed in the economy. It will define the interests of other important actors such as Russia, Turkey and the USA; and finally, it will assess the EU energy security, the role of Azerbaijan as the...
Uzbekistan's Foreign Policy (2001-2012): The Pendulum Diplomacy between the US and Russia
Lídl, Václav ; Šír, Jan (advisor) ; Horák, Slavomír (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the creation of Uzbekistan's foreign policy. It attempts to answer three main research questions: What were the chief goals of Tashkent's foreign policy? What were the factors that influenced the creation of Uzbekistan's foreign policy? Which factors and causes played the decisive role in the case of Uzbekistan's most significant foreign policy turnovers in 2001, 2005 and 2012? It claims the principal aims of Uzbekistan's foreign policy were threefold. Firstly, it was the preservation of Uzbekistan's independence. Secondly, it was the strengthening and securing of Karimov's regime. Finally, it was the attempt to become the regional leader in Central Asia. Subsequently, the study maintains that the foreign policy formulation was altered by four processes or challenges which the regime in Tashkent had to cope with. These were namely the challenge of geopolitical position, establishing of a viable political system, transforming the command economy, and the threat of radical or political Islam. Uzbekistan's pendulum diplomacy between the US and Russia is a new term coined for the purposes of this study. I argue that Tashkent was prone to change abruptly its strategic partner in order to secure its three strategic imperatives. Hence, there occurred three turnovers of...
Iran in Putin's foreign policy: Is Russian approach towards Iran part of broader Russian foreign policy strategy?
Typoltová, Johana ; Svoboda, Karel (advisor) ; Horák, Slavomír (referee)
Bachelor's thesis is concerned with Iran's position in Russian foreign policy from 2000 to 2011. Iran has been highly debated by international community in last decade, due to his controversial nuclear energy program. Russia supported sanctions imposed on Iran by UN Security Council. However, Russia refused to bolster any other kind of sanctions and maintained commercial and strategic cooperation with Iran. Main purpose of the thesis is to find out if Russia maintains its relations with Iran due to broader Russian interests, which were declared in Russian foreign policy concepts, or if Russian actions towards Iran are simply a response to Iranian behaviour and development in international affairs.
