Friedl, Marián ; Matoušek, Vlastislav (advisor) ; Havlík, Jaromír (referee)
My theses The Asian department's musical instrument collection of the Náprstek Museum of Prague167 from an ethnoorganological point of view deal with several topics in seven parts: 1. The first part describes the evolution of the ethnomusicological thinking and also the thinking about musical instruments and classification in organology. This part is also aimed to reveal the interrelations between cultural anthropology, ethnomusicology, ethnoorganology and classificatory organology. 2. A specific classification based on Hornbostel-Sachs systematik is shown and explained here as a basis for one part of musical instrument's description in the Náprstek Museum's computer database. 3. How to work with the museum's computer software, how the describing terms from part 2 are used in the database and how they can help us while working with instruments, these topics are included here. 4. In part four we can find numerical and graphical evaluation of the content of collection based on work with the museum's computer software and the describing system devised for this purpose. 5. This part offers basic organographical description of the musical instruments formerly long-lastingly exhibited. (Since 2001 floods whole collection unapproachable.) 6. The Chinese instrumental ensemble and genre Jiangnan sizhu is depicted...

My work is based on assumption of historicity of musical terminology. I consider the notions polystylism and collage as period musical terms and I attempt to reconstruct their meaning. Time definition of the thesis is delimited by the years 1960 and 2000. Lower time limit is selected regarding to nature of the topic - the 60s are the period when works and reflections belonging to the context of the notions polystylism and collage first appeared. The first part of my thesis focuses on the general mapping of the topic polystylism and collage. I summarized relevant musicology literature and I dealed with historical and teoretical relations of polystylism and collage to related terms (first of all postmodernism, montage and style), I was concerned with the context of European and American music and with question of polystylism and collage in Czech popular music....

Kolátorová, Petra ; Gabrielová, Jarmila (advisor) ; Havlík, Jaromír (referee) ; Niubo, Marc (referee)
Mgr. Petra Kolátorová Abstract: Thesis dealt with the Serenade E major Op. 22 (B 52) and the Serenade for Wind Instruments Op. 44 (B 77) of Antonín Dvořák in the view of the musical genre of the orchestral serenade. It answered the question of influence and meaning of the Dvořák's Serenades among Serenades of his contemporaries, the question of place of this genre among the other musical genres and the question of reflection of music criticism at that time. Analysis of both works and their comparison with the selected works showed the way how the expectation of this genre reflected in the compositional ways and methods of both Dvořák's Serenades. The composer in his Serenades depicted all layers of meaning of this genre as was such a noble simplicity, oscilation of the genre between chambre and orchestral music between artistic or rather entertaining character of music, continuity of original serenades and history of the genre. Dvořák had created the works which in certain aspects foreshadowed near future (neoclasicism).

Attraction and Problems of the Antonín Dvořáks Piano Works
Víšek, Tomáš ; Palkovská, Jana (advisor) ; Gregor, Vít (referee) ; Havlík, Jaromír (referee)
This thesis endeavours to fill a gap in the specialized literature concerning the interpretation of Dvořák's compositions. His works for piano are often overlooked and marginalized. As this thesis was written at a pedagogical fakulty, it should be suitable as an expert guide for active performers who are interested in Dvořák's piano compositions. However, it will also be useful to those still on their way to discovering these works. There are step by step analyses of all the piano works for two hands. Very detailed musical examples and comparisons aim to bring their compositional beauty closer to the performer and also offer advice on how to overcome or avoid problems that may arise while studying them. (Dvořák was a competent pianist, but he did not have any continuous training nor indeed any desire to be a concert pianist.) This detailed study of the individual pieces is completed by a well-drafted summary of Dvořák's pianistic education and execution and concise information being gained through the previous analyses. Finally there is a passage outlining the suitability and choice amongst Dvořák's piano music for young musicians and a basic list of pianists dedicated to the performance of Dvořák's music in the Czech Republic and abroad. KEYWORDS - Antonín Dvořák - piano playing - piano...

Kadlec, Petr ; Ottlová, Marta (advisor) ; Gabrielová, Jarmila (referee) ; Havlík, Jaromír (referee)
Karel Ančerl 1968-1973. A documentary monograph OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this thesis is to capture and describe the last five years (1968-1973) of life and artistic achievements of the conductor Karel Ančerl. This is a topic which has not been elaborated on an academic level yet. On the beginning of the captured period we find Ančerl to be a prominent member of the Czechoslovak music environment working as the chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic. At the end of this period, Ančerl permanently lived and worked in Canada as the chief conductor of the Toronto Symphony. This fact is reflected in the two main topics of this thesis. First, there is the theme of process of following a qualitative change which the Toronto Symphony undertook during Karel Ančerl's leadership. Second, there is the relationship of the conductor to the Czechoslovak environment and its musical tradition. Main axis of the thesis is defined by a chronological following of the affairs of Karel Ančerl's life story in the given period. METHODOLOGY: Since the estate of Karel Ančerl has been missing, some of the important - maybe even the most important - documents still remain unknown. The story is being told with the help of supporting sources, just like is the correspondence between Ančerl and Ivan Medek, which covers...

Jan Novák (1921-1984): Chapters from His Creative Years OBJECTIVES: This work has set a goal to cover and summarize current results of research into existing sources and to complete them with yet unstudied data related to the personality and work of Jan Novák. In the light of new sources and materials, it aims at putting forward a more plastic view on the story of composer's life; at characterizing fundamental features of this type of composer; and it points out a range of crucial issues for further research in this field. The main part of this work therefore comprises of a biographical study based i.a. on yet unpublished sources from personal archives of Jan Novák's family and on interviews with family members and friends recorded by the author. METHODOLOGY: I have mostly used the method of oral history in order to verify and complete the missing information concerning the life and work of the composer. The testimony of living family members and other composer's contemporaries represents the major source of information for certain periods of time, and provides a solid basis which, being compared with available correspondence and further sources, made it possible to complete, verify and amend existing data of composer's life. RESULTS: Testimony of composer's contemporaries was most helpful to shed...
