Slovak Ladies' Chamber Orchestra (1969-2013): A music historical probe
Pisárová, Pavla ; Havelková, Tereza (advisor) ; Vacková Gillies, Barbora (referee)
The bachelor thesis is the first in-depth exploration of the hitherto unexamined activities of the first Slovak Ladies' Chamber Orchestra (1969-2013). The thesis delves into the personal stories of the female musicians, the orchestra's activities, and its evolution over the years within the framework of musical life and gender politics in Slovakia. This contextualization serves to elucidate the orchestra's activities. The research relies on interviews conducted with Elena Šarayová-Kováčová (1943), the first professional Slovak female conductor and founder of the orchestra, ten members of the orchestra, and information extracted from the surviving chronicles. The study adopts the methodology of oral history and draws on a feminist-informed historiography of contemporary music history. Although they were professional musicians who had studied their instruments at conservatories and earned a living in symphony orchestras, the Ladies' Chamber Orchestra never became a full-time occupation for them and was not always perceived as a professional orchestra. Nevertheless, my research indicates a significant improvement in the status of women in classical music during their tenure. The thesis contributes to the ongoing research regarding the involvement and role of women in musical life in Slovakia,...
Exploring the cultural and political meanings of Má vlast in the First Czechoslovak Republic
Kodýtek, Pavel ; Havelková, Tereza (advisor) ; St Pierre, Kelly (referee)
3 Abstract Smetana's Má vlast (My Country) has long held a unique place in Czech national culture and is considered one of the constitutive elements of the Smetana myth in popular consciousness. Over forty years ago, in musicological discourse, Vladimír Lébl and Jitka Ludvová (1981) advocated for "removing the layers" of the Smetana myth, challenging the prevailing notion of Smetana as the sole genius by mapping the contemporary roots of Má vlast. Only recently, however, have musicologists begun to uncover the layers of the myth to a more serious degree, among them Brian S. Locke (2006), Christopher Campo-Bowen (2016), and Kelly St. Pierre (2017). This thesis contributes to this discussion by exploring the meanings of Má vlast and the Smetana myth in the context of the 1924 Smetana centenary celebrations. It reveals how the myth was repurposed by various stakeholders to justify diverse cultural policies and demonstrates that the different, overtly political interpretations were primarily a product of the ideologies and interests of these protagonists. The study also highlights the crucial role of the Czechoslovak government in enabling the celebrations and its use of them to achieve particular political objectives. Drawing on period sources, including archival materials, journal, and newspaper articles, as...

Veselá, Tereza ; Šídlo, Luděk (advisor) ; Havelková, Tereza (referee)
Fertility in Czechia within the polarity of urban vs. rural areas in 1996-2020 Abstract The intensity and timing of fertility have undergone significant development since the early 1990s in Czechia, which can be observed through several demographic indicators of fertility. This bachelor's thesis analyses the difference in the development of fertility intensity and timing between urban and rural municipalities for the entire Czechia and individual districts separately since 1996 to 2020. The theoretical part of the thesis addresses regional differentiation of fertility, fertility trends in the Czechia since the 1990s, and the definition of the concepts of urban and rural areas, based on which the municipalities of the Czechia are divided in the analytical part of the thesis. The aim of this study is to compare the fertility trends between urban and rural areas and identify regions with same or similar values of the resulting demographic indicators. In the analytical part of the thesis, further analysis is conducted on the differences in intensity and timing of fertility for each selected fertility indicator separately, which shows the differentiation of the studied urban and rural dichotomy. Key words: intensity and timing of fertility, urban area, rural area, total fertility rate, mean age of women at birth...
"Being vnye": Mylène Farmer and French Pop Music in Post-Soviet Russia
Kaznacheeva, Anna ; Havelková, Tereza (advisor) ; Kratochvíl, Matěj (referee)
The thesis examines how French popular music is experienced in post-Soviet Russia based on the Russian reception of the contemporary French singer Mylène Farmer. Farmer has remained popular in Russia ever since her songs and music videos entered the country following the collapse of the USSR. Producing complex and intellectually demanding audiovisual projects, the French artist attracts the audience aspiring to be perceived as today's Russian intellectual elite. The following analysis proves that while popular music is marginalised inside Russian cultural hierarchies, highbrow French songs tend to function as acknowledged sources of cultural capital. The thesis outlines the history of the Russian reception of French (popular) culture to show that Farmer's success in the country is closely connected with traditional Russian fascination with France. Drawing on the concept of the Imaginary West developed by the anthropologist Alexei Yurchak, the research follows how Russian attitude towards the West has shaped - and has been shaped by - the reception of French popular music. Key words: Mylène Farmer, popular music, videoclip, French pop, Russia, Imaginary West
The Prague scene of American traditional jazz revival and its representation on Czechoslovak television in times of the so-called Normalization
Kozák, Tomáš ; Havelková, Tereza (advisor) ; Douša, Eduard (referee)
The Prague scene of American traditional jazz revival on Czechoslovak television in times of the so-called Normalization Abstract This bachelor thesis deals with the Prague scene of American traditional jazz revival in times of the so-called Normalization. By American traditional jazz revival, I mean revival of American jazz from the 1920s and early 1930s. Even though its indisputable Western origins were not in accordance with the politic of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, especially during the so-called Normalization, traditional jazz revival was very popular then. The scene consisted of quite a lot of both new and well-established bands - a selection of which is also introduced in this bachelor thesis. The thesis focuses on the aforementioned Prague scene as a whole, including Prague venues where traditional jazz revival concerts and festivals were held, as well as the bands. While presenting the scene as a whole, I take a closer look at two of the bands which managed to gain international acclaim. These two are Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra (Originální pražský synkopický orchestr) and Traditional Jazz Studio (Traditional Jazz Studio Pavla Smetáčka). The broadness and quality of the scene is in my opinion also proven by the fact that the bands frequently appeared in media such as...
Current state and perspectives of development of residential social services capacities for the elderly in MEP administrative districts of the Vysočina Region
Havelková, Tereza ; Šídlo, Luděk (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
Current state and perspectives of development of residential social services capacities for the elderly in MEP administrative discricts of the Vysočina Region Abstract The thesis deals with the evaluation of the current capacities of residential social services for seniors in the administrative discricts of municipalities with extended powers (AD MEP) of the Vysočina Region and an outline of their possible future development. First, a projection of the population in MEP administrative discricts was created on the basis of the projection of the population of the Vysočina Region and the demographic characteristics of the given administrative districts. Data on the current capacities of homes for the elderly and homes with a special regime in individual MEP administrative discricts were obtained from the Register of Social Service Providers. Based on our projection of the population and the current capacities of residential social services, model estimates of the capacities of these facilities in the administrative districts of the Vysočina Region were calculated. It was found that in order to maintain the current availability of residential services, capacities should increase by more than a third by 2050. The highest relative increase in capacity should occur in AD MEP Velké Meziříčí and AD MEP Jihlava,...
"Musicians or Curiosities?" Czechoslovak All-Girl Band Satanic Girls
Svobodová, Eliška ; Havelková, Tereza (advisor) ; Seidlová, Veronika (referee)
The thesis deals with the Czechoslovakian all-girl band Satanic Girls (in South America performing under the name Las Satánicas), which performed in exile since August 1968. The author, using music and anthropological approaches based on the analysis of interviews (conducted in the period February 2013 - March 2014), press articles, photos, videos and archival materials, describes, analyses and interprets the history of the band. Doing so, the main emphasis is being put on the processes of negotiation. Setting out the thematic line "women - musicians - emigrants", the text observes how the emigration and the constant extreme changes in the cultural environment as well as the managers influenced the musical and visual style of the band. One of the central themes is a permanent, involuntary (and sometimes unconscious) oscillation of the band between being presented as the musicians or as the sexual attractions.
Luboš Fišer, the final period of his work
Endršt, Jaroslav ; Slavický, Milan (advisor) ; Havelková, Tereza (referee)
Analysis which is in chronological order are trying to explain the process of musical language of Lubos Fiser at the last twenty years of his life. They are detaily analyzing his very personal writing. In first chapter are all basic characteristics of Fiser's writing from the end of the 70's. These had Martina Bartosova272 in her theses. Later on in other chapters are details of characteristic writing of Fiser in next twenty years. Let's see which way was going his developing process of musical language. From the view of musical form, it's practically same for the time of the 80's and 90's. Composition is divided into small sections. There are usually twelve up to twenty-five sections depending on the length of the composition. Beside traditional short forms are in that time showing up two other compositions which are much more extensive. These are almost twenty minutes long. Slacburské serenády (1979) have 52 sections and over the one-hour long TV opera Věčný Faust (1983-5) have 131 sections. Each of them is independent section, which are put together in the following order. On the other hand they are not so contrast and antithetic as in 60's. Especially independent sections of larger forms like Věčný Faust or Salcburské serenády are put together into thematic groups with one dominating theme. From 60's is...

Genesis, the television oratorio. Audio-visual analysis within the context of Czech television opera
Ledvinka, Martin ; Havelková, Tereza (advisor) ; Kratochvíl, Matěj (referee)
The present thesis proposes a deconstructive analysis of Czech television oratorio Genesis (director Pavel Hobl, music Zbigniew Wiszniewsky, Czechoslovak Television and Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen, 1969). Using concepts of voice-object and acousmêtre, this study examines music of the oratorio as an important narrative feature of the audio-visual object. The text interprets the narrative of the oratorio as a crituque of logocentrism and rationalism of modern society. Beside the interpretative part, the study duscusses history and preception of the genre of television opera in Czechoslovakia from early 60s to 1989. Two concepts of the production of television opera are introduced: first, a concept of television opera as a mediator of an existing operatic work, or as means of cultural education of "mass audience"; secondly, television opera is called to represent a new art form using specific television means. These concepts are found in texts by Czech music theorists and journalists of 60s, when the disputation about television opera in Czech journals culminated. A list of television operas produced by Czechoslovak television until 1989 is attached.
