Gresko, Olesya ; Balon, Jan (advisor) ; Hasmanová Marhánková, Jaroslava (referee)
This thesis examines gender roles and their development in Czech society. The theoretical part defines the concepts of gender and sex, examines gender roles and the combination of work and family roles, with an emphasis on the changes in attitudes towards gender roles over time. The thesis draws on previous research and analyses of attitudes towards gender roles. It combines secondary analysis of data from the ISSP international research project with analysis of qualitative interviews. The research objectives include describing the attitudes of Czech society towards gender roles, verifying the existing findings in a new context and examining the influence of the current gender structure on attitudes towards gender roles and the harmonisation of work and family responsibilities. Several key findings regarding gender roles in Czech society emerged from the analysis. Data from the ISSP secondary analysis shows that attitudes towards gender roles are not static and undergo changes over time. Some trends in the view of gender roles in the family and at work have been identified that indicate a shift away from traditional models. Qualitative analysis of the interviews provides deeper insights into the individual attitudes and experiences of respondents. It shows that despite societal progress, there are...
Diagnostic experience of patients with fibromyalgia-
Králová, Josefína ; Hasmanová Marhánková, Jaroslava (advisor) ; Vokřálová, Eliška (referee)
This paper focuses on the process of establishing a diagnosis for patients suffering from fibromyalgia. First, in the theoretical part, the issue is anchored in the fundamental concepts of the sociology of medicine. The social construction of medical knowledge, of the patient's role, medicalization, and the labelling theory is introduced, followed by a discussion on the contested diseases with a special focus on the diagnosis of fibromyalgia. Moreover, the dimension of gender with particular attention to medicalization and the establishment of diagnosis is described. In the analytical part, there are presented data obtained from ten semi-structured interviews conducted with fibromyalgia patients. Divided into three sections, the analysis focuses on the process of seeking a diagnosis, the consequences of establishing a diagnosis, and the impact of a fibromyalgia diagnosis on a patient's life. In the analytical part, it is also discussed how the diagnostic progress is affected by gender. The thesis' objective is to identify how the diagnostic process in the case of fibromyalgia is developed, in order to describe, among other things, how the diagnosis is socially constructed and what impact it has on the patients, whether in relation to medical professionals, state programmes of social assistance, the...
Approach towards women in birthing and postnatal care
Černá, Johanka ; Kotherová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Hasmanová Marhánková, Jaroslava (referee)
This thesis focuses on the approach of obstetric and postnatal care providers towards women in the Czech Republic. To identify what experiences the mothers deemed essential and to explore the impact of physicians' approach towards them, qualitative research based on semi-structured interviews was conducted. Those interviews were later analyzed using mainly the sociological framework originating from Talcott Parson's role-based theory of the doctor-patient relationship, namely the paternalistic and partnership models of the doctor-patient relationship and the concept of person-oriented care. The main findings of the research are that interviewed women who experienced rather paternalistic model tend to imply overall dissatisfaction with the obstetric and postnatal care, meanwhile those women who experienced rather partnership model described their experiences as rather pleasant and stated they would choose the same hospital for labor again. The research identified six key topics, that interviewed women referred to as crucial for them in care providers' approach. These topics are routine, privacy, information, physical integrity, method of communication, and degree of empathy. Aside from the main findings, the research has also discovered that the paternalistic and partnership approaches can create...
Active ageing in the times of covid. Experiences of the organizers of free time activities
Mejtská, Petra ; Hasmanová Marhánková, Jaroslava (advisor) ; Hrešanová, Ema (referee)
The topic of this thesis is the experiences of employees and volunteers working in centres and clubs for the elderly people that organize leisure activities for their clients. These organisations fulfil the idea of active ageing, which they define as healthy and correct way of ageing. Activity, participation and social contact are important aspects of this concept, which should lead to an improved quality of life in old age, physical and mental health and other benefits. However, during the spring of 2020, all activities of the centres (and other institutions) were interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Elderly people were advised to stay home and isolate themselves. This, however, brought additional risks for them. Loneliness in old age is a debated topic that was accentuated during the pandemic. This thesis uses qualitative methods, and my communication partners are volunteers, lecturers and managers of the senior centres and clubs who worked there throughout the pandemic and beyond. Using in-depth qualitative, semi-open-ended interviews, this thesis is interested in how they coped with the sudden closure during the pandemic and what strategies they adopted to protect their clients. The text seeks to approach their decision-making on the edge of two risks - loneliness and the possibility of...
Migrant Parents in the Czech Republic: Child Health Care Experiences and Attitudes Towards Childhood Vaccination
Dvořáčková, Lenka ; Smith, Simon (advisor) ; Hasmanová Marhánková, Jaroslava (referee)
This thesis presents data gained from qualitative research that took place in Prague, Czech Republic during winter 2022 and spring 2023. The aim was to find out how foreign mothers perceive the local health care system and mandatory immunization scheme. The theoretical part presents information and statistics related to immunization worldwide and in the Czech Republic. The sociological theoretical part discusses Parsons' and other researchers' work on doctor-patient relationship and Beck's risk society in relation to immunization. The research is based on in-depth semi-structured interviews with 14 women who are migrant mothers. All except one interview was conducted online via the Zoom platform. The analysed data presents, firstly, the informants' experiences with healthcare for children; secondly, their communication and relationship with paediatricians; and thirdly, their general attitudes and sources of information used to make immunization choices for their children. The results demonstrate the importance for these mothers' sense of agency and wellbeing of building trusting relationships, sharing decision making and choosing the appropriate language(s) for communication.

Aoufová, Anisa ; Hasmanová Marhánková, Jaroslava (advisor) ; Grygar, Jakub (referee)
The diploma thesis entitled Negotiating consent and sexual intimacy in the Czech Republic is devoted to sexual consent and its problematic definition. The aim of the thesis is to find out how experts in the field of criminal law, specifically lawyers, perceive the limits of consensual behavior in the Czech Republic. Lawyers play a key role in shaping the legal system and have a great influence on public attitudes. The thesis focuses on the definition of sexual consent and the factors that influence the definition of sexual consent in society. These factors include cultural attitudes, social myths, sexual scripts and the legal system of a given society. The thesis is further focused on sexual consent in the field of criminal law, on the definition of rape in the Czech legal system and on its practical shortcomings. The possibility of redefinition of rape and the influence of participants in criminal proceedings on this issue are analyzed. The practical part is aimed at lawyers who deal with criminal law. The thesis is focused on the "weaknesses" of the current legal system, and it was examined how lawyers who navigate the legal system evaluate the currently set system, how they define sexual consent and its transgression, how they frame the social discussion and how their gender ideas manifest...
Sexual assistance as an object of media spectacularization
Rokosová, Anna ; Hasmanová Marhánková, Jaroslava (advisor) ; Balon, Jan (referee)
In my diploma thesis I deal with the issue of media spectacularization in the context of the provision of sexual assistance services. My thesis includes a critical discursive analysis of selected online posts with this topic in selected Czech media. These media are Novinky.cz, iDnes.cz, Aktuálně.cz and Blesk.cz. Since this service first has started to be provided in the Czech Republic in the autumn of 2015, I take advantage of the more active debate on this topic in later years. The aim of my thesis is to highlight the spectacularization of the topic of sexual assistance in selected media, to identify the legitimizing means and to define the discursive levels that appear in the media space. Subsequently, I focus on the actors who speak on the topic of sexual assistance in the media, whether actively or not. An important theme of my thesis is normativity as a social construct (disability studies, social roles) and the stigma associated with it. Afterwards, I used selected media to analyse the transformation of the topic through its spectacularisation and point out the disciplining of the topic through its frame. In my thesis, I draw attention to the social image that the media transforms the sexual assistance service into, how the detabulation of the topic is reflected here, how ideas about gender...
Perception of dementia by professional carers
Osúchová, Veronika ; Hasmanová Marhánková, Jaroslava (advisor) ; Numerato, Dino (referee)
This diploma thesis is focused on professional carers, who are trained experts employed in specialised institutions that take care about more than one person with dementia in one group. The professional carers are under pressure during this time and there is a certain tension between reaching the maximal possible high quality care and growing number of clients in institutions specialised in dementia and dementia discourse, in which framework especially negative connotations are highlighted. It is just an approach of the carers that plays an important role in this issue. The work with dementia discourse and dealing with the above mentioned issue from the side of carers has a considerable impact on functioning, health condition and quality of life of individuals with dementia. Their dealing with the issue can influence strongly and steer the running an institution and the quality of life of such an institution clients. A difficult situation of professional carers also influences the carers themselves, their concepts of this illness and concepts of their own ageing. This diploma thesis is aimed at an analysis how the pictures of dementia are constructed by professional carers who take care about clients with various forms of dementia in the long term. In the framework of this thesis, their subjective...
