Metoděj Habáň (1899-1984): A Probe into the History of Czech Neothomism Abstract The thesis is focused on the depiction of the life and work of Metoděj Habáň (1899-1984), Czech Dominican priest and philosopher. It follows two main goals: First, it strives to present accurate reconstruction of Habáň's life and his involvement in the Czech Church and society. Secondly, it presents Metoděj Habáň's thinking as a specific type of Thomism and analyse his work in the context of the paradigmatic changes, which the Church and society went throught in the 20th century. The thesis is therefore divided into two main parts - first is focused on Habáň's life, second on his work. In the first chapter it present main sources of inspiration for his work and thinking. In the following chapters it describes his life journey, beginning with his studies and spiritual formation within the Dominican order. It continues with his role in the inner life of the order in the position of Novice Master and Prior Provincial (1938-1942). Attention is also paid to his involvement in the public life of the interwar society. In the period after the second world war we follow Metoděj Habáň to Litoměřice, a town in northwest Bohemia and we describe his imprisonment in the 1950s and subsequently his involvement in public life in the 1960s. Hanuš, Jiří ; Bláha, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Slavík, Jan (referee) ; Sedláková, Radomíra (referee)
Architecture is an integral part of the (not only) visual world and human existence. Its position expands between utilitarian areas and artistic functions. But what are the specific characteristics that connects it to the visual arts? Is the current architecture visually and experientially inspiring? Dissertation develops a reflection on how, by working with architectural detail to convey a modern architecture to students at schools and permanently integrate it into the education. The goal is the linking with theoretical basis of the author's individual view of the aesthetic qualities of architectural detail with intention of finding didactic bases. As a medium to approach and grasp this phenomenon is used photography, which is seen as a smooth transition between two- dimensional and three-dimensional world. At the same time, however, it works completely autonomously. The research method is based on the principle of interpretative phenomenological analysis, in which, through the interpretation of respondent's works of art and comparison of the individual artistic creation, looking for points of contact and new possibilities for art education. The architectural detail is treated as an artistic language and also as the medium, which offers a number of alternatives, but has so far not found its full...
Between spirit and tangibility. Dynamics in the life of the New Testament church and limits of its application in history
Šály, Martin ; Beneš, Ladislav (advisor) ; Hanuš, Jiří (referee) ; Mrázek, Jiří (referee)
Bibliographic citation Martin Šály, Between spirit and tangibility: Dynamics in the life of the New Testament church and limits of its application in history (Mezi duchem a hmatatelností: Dynamika života církve v Novém zákoně a meze jejího uplatnění v historii). Dissertation, Charles University in Prague, Evangelical Theological Faculty, Prague, 2016. Summary The subject of the paper is the New Testament church. The author first draws attention to hermeneutic difficulties of the subject. These include e. g. a distinction between (1) the theological language of the church, which can be found in the NT in the form of many various images of the church, and (2) the NT passages intended to talk about the church as a religious organization, to target church ethics and so on. In the NT, however, the perfect distinction between the two areas is not always possible. Methodically, the work conceives the New Testament church to live in a dynamic space formed with various axes between different poles. Therefore, the NT church is not described here using certain typical attributes, but it is viewed in the dynamic space of "tensions between poles". The following pairs of poles are described for the New Testament church life: spirit - tangibility; The tradition of Jesus of Nazareth - The church tradition; ideal - reality;...

Pastoral care, or persuasion? The influence of church leaders and their control of clergy and believers. Research of religiosity, communication strategies of priests and their image in letters in the late 19th and early 20th century. Tomáš W. Pavlíček SUMMARY The author of the Ph.D. thesis examines the religious culture in Bohemia in the late 19th century. Contrary to the concept of secularization and the prevalent opinion about an extraordinary decline of religiosity in the Czech society, he attempts to explain the interdependence of social and religious changes in the modern times. Within the sociological concept of secularization and disenchantment of the world, the author focuses on three phenomena: the vocation of a priest, religious practices and conversion, which he treats as religious concepts and at the same time applies them in historical research. The biggest part of the thesis is devoted to the first object of the research - the attitude of a priest towards his vocation, as the clergy is the agent of religious change. The thesis contributes to the current discussions about the relationship of the church and the state and the role of clergy in the society. The main questions are: What is the role of a priest in the religious changes? In what way or under what circumstances does a person get the...

The central hypothesis, that is being verified by this thesis, is that despite the indisputable contribution of highly recognized Southern writers to building of Southern identity, these authors expressed in their works also often sharp critiques of the social conditions in the South.
Michel Novak and Patrick Buchanan as Major Representatives of Contemporary American Political Catholicism
Míčka, Roman ; Barša, Pavel (advisor) ; Balík, Stanislav (referee) ; Hanuš, Jiří (referee)
This dissertation Michael Novak and Patrick Buchanan as Major Representatives of Contemporary American Political Catholicism compares the political thought of two faces of contemporary American political Catholicism represented by the neoconservative Michael Novak and the paleoconservative Patrick J. Buchanan. The first part deals with the context of contemporary political Catholicism and its historical background. The comparison thematizes five problem fields: the issue of democracy and American political system, economic problems, question of foreign policy, the issue of religion and Catholicism and, finally, the conflict over the basis of conservatism. To accomplish the given objective, I analyse the work of both authors, compare their respective ideological positions and set them in the context of other major authors in the given areas and in the context of established political theories. The comparison shows that they both emphasize the significance of the religious and moral aspect of democracy, especially in the American context, however, they do not agree on the universal reach of democratic ideals. In the field of economics, they stand for different views: Novak is an economic neoliberal, while Buchanan a radical economic nationalist. Similarly in relation to foreign policy, Novak...

You will be introduced to some countries which have a long tradition of school uniforms and those in the Czech Republic who are just at the very beginning. I will present my findings based on a research survey of the wider public in which I have posed the question of what the public thinks of school uniforms and what effect this has on their perception of uniforms. I also present detailed photographic artwork drafts which represent uniformity. What follows in this paper is the implementation of these concepts as well as my own graphic examples of school uniforms. These drafts were given to an experienced artist who brought them to life through interpretive painting. Keywords: uniform, school, dress code, wear, art education
Bob Dylan in the Context of American Protest Song
Procházková, Mariana ; Calda, Miloš (advisor) ; Hanuš, Jiří (referee)
The tradition of protest songs in the United States is a continuum, which began in colonial times with the British Broadside Ballads, was nurtured in the 19th century through the Negro spirituals, and throughout the 20th century by performers such as Joe Hill, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Bob Dylan. Out of necessity, blacks developed strategies of veiled protests to a fine art during the 19th century. The perennial cause of the black protest was the status forced on them by white supremacists. The spirituals encouraged them to persevere in their efforts to free themselves from the shackles of slavery. Many of the spirituals were modified in the 1950s to accommodate the needs of the Civil Rights Movement. This appropriation of the Southern rural folk music tradition was the genesis of a phenomenon which has become known as the American folk music revival. The foremost figure of the movement was Woody Guthrie, the author of "This land is Your Land." Guthrie is cited as major influence on his disciple Bob Dylan, who was pronounced the folk messiah of the folk circles. This paper seeks to determine whether Dylan was, in contrast to his assertions, a topical songwriter writing about particular events or whether he was in fact an apolitical artist, whose personal insight and feelings simply happened to fit the...
