Lék nebo hrozba? Antropologické perspektivy samoléčby konopím v České republice
Bláhová, Barbora ; Horák, Miroslav (advisor) ; Halbich, Marek (referee)
This diploma thesis focuses specifically on the phenomenon of self-medication with cannabis (Cannabis Sativa L.) in the Czech Republic exploring subjective perception of this treatment by ill persons and its sociocultural framework. It describes a situation when the state fails to effectively regulate medical cannabis and patients often seek practices of self-medication, which remains illegal. Theoretical part of this thesis aims to explain the self- medication and cannabis use in the sociocultural context. Practical part is based on an anthropological research, which was implemented in the Czech Republic from January 1, 2017 to May 1, 2017 in a form of the on-line qualitative questionnaire survey. The research sample consists of 107 subjects, who used cannabis and its derives for self-medication. The analysis was done by the Grounded theory method. The results demonstrate that people who seek cannabis self-medication in the Czech Republic consider current legal regulation of cannabis objectionable. Cannabis plants for self-medication are usually grown at home and people find information about specifics of the treatment on-line. Looking at experience of patients, this thesis describes specifics of the practices of cannabis self-medication and it could be useful for organizations working with...
Saving the Local at the Global Table
Huszthyová, Liliana ; Halbich, Marek (advisor) ; Ryška, Tomáš (referee)
A concern with the other has been present for half a millennium in western thought. The classic concept of indigenousness denoted the lowest position in the scale of civilization by creating the remote other. However, the historical changes can be traceable also in the different positioning of the remote other. The fall of colonialism brought about fundamental challenges and redefined the terms of this relationship. In this thesis I have discussed the relationship between the human rights and anthropology with a special focus on the indigenous rights, as they form a unique crossroad between various disciplines and sciences. In order to closely analyze the transnational activism I held a specific focus on the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) in the broader context of the historical developments of the indigenous rights. It was shown, how the indigenous people were initially constructed as distinct, and subordinate groups via the polyvalent discourses of the noble and ignoble savages. Although created half a millennium ago, the relics of the stereotypical thinking have craved their ways into the modern institutional setting. Despite the fact that currently there are more opportunities for indigenous peoples to participate in institutional activities than ever before, the issues...

Šírová, Lucie ; Halbich, Marek (advisor) ; Heřmanský, Martin (referee)
This master's thesis is concerned with the phenomenon of tourism in the context of social and cultural anthropology, approaching the anthropology of tourism from a comparative perspective. Studying the historical development of this phenomenon, it proposes that tourism might be considered as a metaphore of postmodern lifestyle. Through a case study of tourists in India designed by the thesis's author, this paper aims both to apply the field research data to theoretical approaches, and to suggest conclusions as well as the specific characteristics of tourist in India.
Backpack, hiking boots and mascara: Analysis of women independent travelling from the perspective of anthropology of tourism
Kučerová, Petra ; Ezzeddine, Petra (advisor) ; Halbich, Marek (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with the analysis of the gender aspects of women travelling and experience of women travellers, who set out to the non-Europe destinations on their own. The thesis is based on in-depth interviews with women travellers and analyze how these journeys are important to them. The thesis tries to point out that women's solo travelling directly effects their biography as well as career and status of these female travellers. Women independent travelling is introduced as the dynamic process, by means of which they acquire or verify the gender power and abilities, applicable to their personal life and work. Using the concepts of feminist theories implemented on women's travelling, I try to show that this type of travelling is affected by history and prefers male travelling, which displaces the individual women's travelling on the edge of the social and scientific interest. This thesis is based on the anthropology of tourism, particularly on the study of backpacking and set the experience of the woman traveller in the frame of the rites of passage. Moreover the thesis contains the analysis of the public and media discourse, focused on the real case of two young women kidnapped in Pakistan. Keywords: anthropology of tourism, women independent travellers, solo travelling, backpacking,...
"I am not a looser that lives only in this bup" Bar Etnography.
Mazáková, Tereza ; Zandlová, Markéta (advisor) ; Halbich, Marek (referee)
Title: 'I'm not a looser that lives only in this pub.' Bar ethnography Keywords: bar, alcohol, meaning, guests, norms, students, ambivalence. Abstract: Goals: to understand the meaning of bar visits and activities that take place in bars. Method: Qualitative research using the methods of participatory observations and semi- structured interviews. Conclusions: A bar is common place in which people choose to spend their free time. It is thought of as a place full of fun, consumption, and social interaction. It forms an important part of free time activities. Alternative free time activities are commonly connected to boredom and loneliness especially by individuals without stable social circles outside of bars. Evenings in bars tend to be stereotypical, especially for frequent visitors. The stereotypical environment is a source of much ambivalence. It carries many positive effects (such as stability, certainty, security, anticipation, and known environment) but can be also perceived negatively (boredom, stagnation). A bar is in the Czech cultural context regarded as an ordinary part of life of people maturing to adulthood. Feelings of inappropriateness can arise in case of a long transition to adulthood. This increases the range of ambivalences towards the bar environment as well as towards the activities...
