Regulation of photosynthesis and primary production in globally important cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus marinus under nitrogen and light stress were examined. The study investigated the model describing relationship between photosynthetic activity and primary production. The photosynthetic energy budget and the efficiency of converting the photosynthetic energy into biomass were described. Molecular and physiological approaches were applied to analyse the utilization of photosynthetic energy and regulation of metabolism to investigate the influence of streamlined oxygen-evolving cluster on the photosynthetic activities.

The rising of CO2 in the atmosphere has shifted the carbonate chemistry in oceans and has influence on the phytoplankton, especially diazotrofic species. In this work we study the response of these diazotrofic species in the N-replete media and N-depleted media to the elevated concentration of CO2.

Chlorophyll fluorescence technique is a nondestructive tool used to study photochemical and nonphotochemical processes in photosynthetic organisms. This study deals with measurements and analysis of chlorophyll fluorescence response of individual algal cells sampled from natural environments of fish-ponds near Třeboň using the technique of fluorescence kinetic microscopy.
