The Use of History in the Power Struggles in the Late Middle Ages

4 Abstract This paper focuses on using narratives about the origins of princely power among late medieval rulers to justify their legitimacy. Its principal aim is to reveal the intercon- nectedness of widespread narrative sources such as chronicles and romances, on the one hand, with still understudied sources such as armorials, heraldic miscellanies and genea- logical scrolls, on the other. The latter type of source has recently begun to attract more medievalists, but it isn't easy to work with them for several reasons. Little is known about the practical use of materials such as genealogical scrolls, which can be more than five metres long. Another reason is that this type of source combines several different aspects. It combines textual, pictorial and diagrammatic parts, which form an integral unit that cannot be dissected and examined separately. This type of source was fully charged with historical, prophetic and symbolic content and was probably intended to serve not only representational but also propagandistic purposes for the rulers. The generation of the second book of Cosmas' Chronicle: To the image of the reign of the sons of Břetislav I

This thesis will evaluate the image of the generation of the sons of Břetislav I. The focus of this thesis will be an attempt to analyse the perception of these five Premyslids, which is presented to us by the Chronicle of Bohemia by dean Kosma. At the same time it will attempt to summarize what can be inferred from other partial accounts, both by his contemporaries and from information of foreign provenance. In the subsequent analysis, it will attempt to define the position of these events in the context of the overall narrative of Czech history constructed by Kosma's Chronicle. An important part of this work will also be an analysis of the influence that this narrative may have had on the interpretations of the Bohemian-Polish royal title of Vratislaus II (I) in modern historical research.

Zawisza Czarny of Garbow at the Court of Sigismud of Luxembourg, King of Hungary

- 1 - Abstract: Zawisza Czarny of Garbów was not only among elite warriors and tournament fighters but also among prominent and respected diplomats of his time. His versatile services were used by two significant Central European rulers - Vladislav II Jagiellon and Sigismund of Luxembourg. The aim of this thesis is to explain and characterize the activities of Zawisza of Garbów alongside Sigismund of Luxembourg, a topic that historiography has only addressed in a general manner. The starting point is the results of previous research.. The thesis focuses on the study of sources, especially narrative and documentary ones, as well as their analysis and comparison. Individual episodes from the life of Zawisza of Garbów associated with Sigismund of Luxembourg are placed within the broader context of the political developments in the countries of Central Europe, particularly the Kingdoms of Poland and Hungary, their mutual relations, and the political activities of King Sigismund of Luxembourg. Another aspect of the thesis is dedicated to contemporary social phenomena, such as the phenomenon of chivalry. Last but not least, the thesis attempts to answer the question of the mutual relationship between the ruler and his prominent knight and its reflection in later tradition.

The eastern policy of John of Bohemia: Czech king and his relations to the Teutonic order

Diploma thesis The eastern Policy of John of Bohemia: Czech King and his Relations to the Teutonic Order deals with diplomatic relations of the Czech king John of Bohemia to the Teutonic order in Prussia in the context of kings eastern-policy. The content of this thesis is delimited by year 1320, when the first intervention of czech king occured in given region and year 1346, when John of Bohemia died. The Thesis proceeds from knowledge of modern and older historiography and comparison of its hypotheses and conclusions with reflection of analysis of sources. The goal of this diploma is to revise the present knowledge of Johns eastern influence, especially his unshakeable alliance with the Teutonic order.

The life and times of the Paston Family through their letters

This present bachelor thesis is concentrated on analysis of preserved Paston family letters. In first part there is shortly written history of house for whole 15th century since rise of William I. Paston among the noble elite, through staying of John I. Paston in London and Margaret Paston's managing of family estates to the dispute over the castle Caister. Next in thesis will be mentioned relationship between Pastons and english rulers Henry VI. and Edward IV and how War of Roses affected them. Also thesis compares correspondence of Pastons with Stonor family letters to capture functioning of families. Goal of this bachelor thesis is reconstruct life and times of Paston family, functioning of noble families and show how Paston percieved their times and how others percieved them.

Richard III - historical construct. Comparison of selected literature.

This bachelor thesis is focused on the English monarch Richard III., the last king of England of the Plantagenet dynasty. The thesis presents discursive analysis of selected literature of English and American provenance, focusing on the research of Richard III. and creating its own historical constructs. Such historical construct is in the given context understood as the author's interpretation of proven and verified facts, whether with an imaginary positive or negative evaluation label. These constructs differ significantly in the case of Richard III. The thesis is trying to find out whether these differences may be related to Richard's alleged physical deformation, one of Richard's frequently mentioned physical attributes, and consequently whether the authors of analysed literature let themselves be influenced by subliminal prejudices connected to the perception of physical differences or physical handicaps. The findings of this analysis are then compared using the comparative method. The thesis then uses the results of this comparison to answer the main research question - does alleged fact of physical disability have an impact on historical interpretations of Richard III.? The problem of succession in norman and Angevin England(1066-1216) in narrative sources of the 12th and the beginning of the 13th century

The dissertation is focused on the problem of succession to the royal throne of England in the period from the accession of William the Conqueror in 1066 to the death of King John in 1216. This topic is studied from the point of view of narrative sources written mostly in the 12th and the beginning of the 13th century. The goal of this thesis is to follow the making of the image of succession in England and to find some tendencies of development regarding the approach to the accession to the throne in these narrative sources through its analysis and comparison. The core of this work is made by the analysis of Angevin narrative sources, contextualized by the study of other works which influenced the emergence of Angevin texts and the forming of their authors' opinions and views.

Vitae sanctorum: Role of the Frankish hagiographic tradition on the accession of Carolingians

(in English): This diploma thesis focuses on the early Carolingian hagiographic production and its role in the Carolingians' rise to power. Two main issues are explored. Firstly, the influence of the hagiographic production on the rise of the Carolingians in the Frankish Empire and on the dynastic coup of 751 is examined. Secondly, the portrayal of the Carolingian expansion into Friesland and Bavaria in the hagiographical writings is analyzed and the legitimizing role that these writings may have played in the Carolingian politics is explored. After a terminological and methodological introduction, the political development of the Frankish Empire is summarized, with an emphasis on the rise of the Carolingians. This account is accompanied by an overview of the development of the Latin hagiographical tradition in the Frankish Empire, with particular reference to the facts that are further explored in the thesis, such as the transformation of the missionary ideal, the image of a noble saint, and the depiction of the cooperation between a saint and a ruler. In the third chapter, the historiographical debate on the Germanic royal sacrality and the phenomenon of noble saints is discussed in detail, and possible uses of its concepts are illustrated. Captives. The works of Johannes Schiltberger, George of Hungary and Konstantin Mihailović as testimonies about late medieval search for identity and cultural integration in the Muslim world Bc. Karolina Srncová The master's thesis enquires into the phenomenon of late medieval reflection on Muslim society in captivity narratives, treatises and memoirs from the pen of former Christian captives. Through a comparison of testimonies by three Europeans, who spent long years in Ottoman or Tatar captivity, the thesis investigates the process of their integration in the Muslim world, their perception of this world, and the notion of it they kept after their return to Christian Europe. Apart from the literary reflection on the other the thesis also pursues authors themselves - how they perceived and constructed their cultural identity in the strange environment, what long-term modus vivendi they employed and by what narratives they tried to present their infidel past back in their homeland. Thus the work aims to contribute to our notion of the Christian-Ottoman encounters in the 15th century, but also to consider the cultural adaptability of late medieval man and the role of captives, men between two worlds, who had to cope with the demands of such an adaptation.

Edward IV. from the View of Contemporary Chronicles

In this paper I will be comparing tree chronicles from times of Edward IV. They are Chronicle of abbey Croyland, Historia Anglica by Polydore Vergil and The London Chronicles. My attention is concentrated on construction of image of King Henry VI. and Edward IV., reasons of similarities and differences between description of affairs - influence by political currents, extension of interests, education of author and his personal motivations. Chronicle of abbey Croyland is monastic chronicle, which author is a member of Edward IV.`s court. Polydore Vergil is humanistic scholar, who wrote on comission of Henry VII., Tudor reinterpretation of history of England. Author of The London Chronicles was Robert Fabyan, alderman of London and leader of draper`s guild. From differences and similarities of their interpretation of common affairs I will criticize possibilities of work with their chronicles
