First sacred speech of Aellios Aristeides: introduction, translation and commentary

Cílem této diplomové práce je představit českému čtenáři zvláštní a poměrně neznámý spis slavného pozdně antického řečníka Ailia Aristeida - Hieroi Logoi. Toto dílo nabízí netradiční pohled na antické náboženství, zprostředkovaný jeho vzdělaným a oddaným stoupencem. Svým obsahem a stylem je to jakási osobní zpověď antického věřícího člověka, jejíž zajímavost spočívá především v tom, že žádné podobné dílo z řeckého pohanského světa dochováno nemáme. Autor nám zanechal svědectví nejen o svém vlastním prožívání vztahu k bohům, ale též podrobně pojednal o praktikách jednoho z nejpopulárnějších pozdně antických náboženských kultů - kultu boha Asklépia. Právě velmi osobní styl výpovědi činí toto dílo pozoruhodným a mnozí historikové řeckého náboženství ho ve svých knihách alespoň stručně zmiňují. Osobní styl výpovědi a líčení nejrůznějších životních starostí, pocitů, událostí, setkání apod. činí z Hieroi Logoi téměř moderní autobiografii, rozhodně však historicky první osobní snář v antické (a evropské) literatuře. Je zde rovněž mnoho materiálu, který může sloužit psychologům k rozboru osobnosti autora, a i z tohoto hlediska je dílo unikátní. Tím, že ukazuje, jakými způsoby profánní i chrámoví lékaři reagovali na evidentní psychické poruchy autora, je dílo pozoruhodné též pro historiky psychologie. Hieroi Logoi...

Word and image: description of images by Philostratus the Elder

The thesis deals with different theories on authorship of the work EžKóvt:c; (Images). It also pursues the way in which contemporary research proceeds. It appears that the present opinion is that the author of the work is Philostratus III. (the Lemnian). I however refer to the original assignment of the authorship. Its other goal is to observe whether Philostratus, descriptions could have been based on pictures in the real gallery or whether the Neapolitan gallery was only fiction and the descriptions were a mere creation of an experienced sophist. However, my conclusion is that the theory stating that his work is based on real pictures is probable. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to a theory of ekphrasis by ancient rhetoricians from the 1st to 5th century A. D. and its use in some of the ancient literary genres and in particular descriptions. The end of the thesis belongs to the translations of ten chosen descriptions of pictures from the work of EiKÓVE~ and the possible influence of Philostratus' work on a number of modern European painters.

The Greek Emigration in Czechoslovakia (1948-1968). Between two splits

Vedoucí disertační práce: PhDr. Miroslav Tejchman, DrSc. ANNOTATION The doctoral thesis Greek Emigration in Czechoslovakia (1948-1968). Between two splits is a historical study of the foundation, establishment and forming of the Greek political emigration in Czechoslovakia in the period between 1948 and 1968. Its main objective is to analyse the political development of emigration, which was in very close contact with the Communist Party of Greece. It is especially focused on the topic of forming a special "emigrant identity" in the context of the two splits of the Greek communists: the first during the period of destalinization and the second during Prague Spring. These problems are being examined from a political and socio-cultural perspective in the context of political development in Greece and Czechoslovakia during this period.

Professor Nikolai Lvovich Okunev (1885-1949) - his life and work

The thesis concentrates on the life and work of Nikolai Lvovich Okunev (1885- 1949), an important historian of art and representative of Medieval studies, Professor at Charles University in Prague. His research work, that already began during his studies at the University in Saint Petersburg, meant an important contribution to studies in the field of Old Russian, Byzantine and Medieval Armenian Art and Architecture. After he had left his native country for political reasons, he was living in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1920-1923, then in 1923-1949 in Czechoslovakia. For more than 20 years he lectured at Charles University in Prague where he educated a number of disciples. He was a member of the Institute of Slavonic Studies, a founder of the Archive and Gallery of the Slavonic art atttached to the Institute, an editor of the scientific journal Byzantinoslavica. His works published during the emigration were devoted especially to Medieval monuments in Serbia and Macedonia. On the concept of composition in the writing On literary composition of Dionysius of Halicarnassus

The text relates to rhetorical theory, stylistics and the history of literary criticism. It deals with a theory of style which has been presented by Dionysius of Halicarnassus in his treatise On literary composition. The literary style is treated in his writing in view of its compositional aspect so-called synthese (gr. ) that is the manner in which the words are connected. The thesis is based on a critical and analytical reading of primary sources as well as to technical literature. It surveys the recent research into several questions and deals with the compositional aspects of style in context of contemporary interest in the Hellenistic euphonic poetics. After two introductory chapters which deal with the Dionysius extant critical writings and the manuscripts and structure of the treatise On literary compositon, the thesis introduces the Dionysian concept of the synthese and its historical and conceptual background. The third chapter deals with a delimitation of the synthese and the other stylistic fields relating to the word selection (gr. ) as well as with the pre-eminence of the synthese considering its aesthetic impression. The sea theme in modern Greek literature

The purpose of my Bachelor thesis is to analyze the motif of the sea in Modern Greek literature, particularly in prose. I have chosen this topic for it combines linguistics with literature. The sea plays a great part in the life of the Greeks and I find it very interesting how Greek writers reflect this fact in their works. The thesis is composed of three chapters. Introductory chapter outlines historical development of sea-voyage and summarizes appearance of the sea theme in the Ancient and Byzantine literature. Chapter Two illustrates motifs of the sea voyages and nautical theme in realistic works of Modern Greek writers of the 20th century. Chapter Three deals with two novels written by authors of the Generation of 30's and influenced by the Asia Minor Disaster. This chapter consists of four parts. Part One examines The Mermaid Madonna by Stratis Myrivilis. Part Three investigates Elias Venezis' Aeolian Earth. Both of them used in their novels legends of mermaids. Part Two provides a comparison between their different approaches to the particular legend. In those three parts I focus on figurative language and distinctive style of these authors in selected passages closely connected with the sea theme.
