Comparison of official life tables construction in selected countries
Godunov, Ivan ; Burcin, Boris (advisor) ; Koňařík, Martin (referee)
Comparison of official life tables construction in selected countries Abstract The main goal of this work is to analyze the methods used by the selected statistical offices in the construction of mortality tables. This work explored fundamental differences regarding the type of published life tables and parameters estimation methods. The theoretical part provides an overview of basic methodological information and description of methodology used, which was acquired during communicating with the selected statistical offices. During the analysis it was found that the differences in calculating the various functions of life tables are minimal, so the analytical part is mainly devoted to methods of estimating the probability of death at age 0 and smoothing of probability of death in older age. Acquired procedures and methods were applied to the data for the Czech Republic for year 2010, which allowed the comparison itself. The final part is the overall evaluation of achieved results, where can be also found commentaries on selected procedures and methods. The analysis shows that the most widely used type is a detailed cross-sectional life table. The most appropriate models of smoothing mortality curve are Kannistö-Thatcher (UK) Martinellův model (Sweden) and Kannistö (Canada). On the other side, the least...
Comparative analysis of avoidable mortality in selected European countries during 1980-2010
Pražák, Michal ; Burcin, Boris (advisor) ; Hulíková Tesárková, Klára (referee)
The main objective of the thesis is the evaluation of the development of avoidable mortality in selected European countries during 1980-2010 with emphasis on comparison of East and West. Concept of avoidable mortality was established to measure the effectiveness of the health care system in 70s of the past century. The main results of the thesis indicate different development of avoidable mortality during 80s in both parts of Europe. Inefficient medical care and inappropriate health policy in formal Eastern Bloc contributed to divergent trends of avoidable mortality in Europe. Different trends of mortality were observed in East European countries especially during the transformation process. The importance of selection of avoidable causes and age limits was confirmed. Mortality convergence and divergence tendencies in selected European countries
Kašpar, Dan ; Hulíková Tesárková, Klára (advisor) ; Burcin, Boris (referee)
The purpose of this thesis is to introduce theoretical and analytical approaches to mortality convergence and divergence tendencies and assessment of these tendencies in the European area since late 1950s using selected analytical tools. In the considered period fundamental changes in mortality development in Europe were observed. The theoretical part of this study deals with the assumptions of mortality convergence and divergence which are included in significant demographic theories and concepts. In the practical part of this thesis, there are analyzed convergence and divergence tendencies of life expectancy at birth in 28 European countries between the years 1959 and 2009 using selected basic statistical characteristics of variability as well as of indicators that consider state population size. Divergence tendencies of mortality since the 1970s are documented and quantified, the specific development of convergence and divergence from the mortality point of view in post-communist states at the end of the 20th century is observed. Next, possibilities of future convergence of mortality in the Czech Republic to states with more favorable initial mortality conditions on the basis of the development of life expectancy at the exact age of 65 in the period 1990-2009 are evaluated. According to this approach,...
Determinants of Regional Differentiation of Mortality in the Czech Republic
Pachlová, Tereza ; Burcin, Boris (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
Determinants of Regional Differentiation of Mortality in the Czech Republic Abstract There are considerable differences in socioeconomic and sociodemographic factors influencing mortality on the individual and also on the aggregate levels. These differences were observed and explained in many countries of the world. The objective of this thesis is to find and evaluate the most significant external factors which influence actual regional differentiation of mortality in districts of the Czech Republic. The objective was achieved by means of the demographic and statistical analysis methods. First, there was a comparison of mortality rates calculated for each of the socioeconomic clusters. It was found out that higher mortality rates appeared among men and women living in the districts with unfavourable external conditions. Using the Poisson log-linear model, the most important factors influencing differences in mortality rates in districts of the Czech Republic were identified. These factors are: share of the unemployed, share of the divorced, share of university-educated people and the number of physicans in hospitals per 1000 inhabitants. Share of the unemployed seems to be the most significant factor. There is a correlation between this factor and the total mortality rate as well as the leading causes of...

The Analysis of Clients of Selected Retirement Homes in Prague and in South-Bohemian Region in terms of Selected Demographic Characteristics
Kristen, Michal ; Burcin, Boris (advisor) ; Rybová, Kristýna (referee)
The Analysis of Clients of Selected Retirement Homes in Prague and in South-Bohemian Region in terms of Selected Demographic Characteristics Abstract The aim of the work is firstly to ascertain and compare the number of beds in retirement houses in the area of capital city Prague and in the South-Bohemian Region, secondly to characterize the clients in retirement houses according to their age, sex and marital status and thirdly to carry out the mortality analysis of clients in selected retirement houses. The Register of Social Service Providers, which is operated by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, was used to find out the number of beds. To characterize the clients in retirement houses the descriptive demographic analysis was utilized and in the case of age it was the comparison with real population in corresponding region. The mortality analysis was worked out with the help of Kaplan-Meier method. Through the conducted research of mortality analysis it was find out that the quality of provided services does not decline with the higher capacity in retirement houses, even more the services are so quality that the clients in those retirement houses reach on the average higher age. Unambiguous differences in facilities between South-Bohemian Region and the capital city Prague result from the...
A comparison of selected models for smoothing and extrapolation of the death curve
Vykoukalová, Helena ; Burcin, Boris (advisor) ; Rybová, Kristýna (referee)
A comparison of selected models for smoothing and extrapolation of the death curve Abstract Due to demographic consequences of the 20th century, a life expectancy has rapidly increased and the propotion of the oldest-age group has grown. The aim of this thesis is to present six models used for smoothing and extrapolation of the data and verify their accuracy using empirical data. The theoretical part of the thesis contents a summary of bibliography and information about used data sets. The second part presents chosen models of smoothing and extrapolating of the data and it suggests the possibilities of comparison among models. The analytical part is aimed to compare the data from 36 developed coun- tries over 4 continents. Countries are divided by similar characteristics into a few smaller groups and the groups are analyzed by period and by life ex- pectancy at birth. Every country is analyzed separately as well as with the others and the model that is the best for the group is recomended. At the end of the analytical part, results are interpreted and the best models are chosen. The logistic models - especially Kannistö model - were the most suitable in the analysis by period and by life expectancy at birth. The least suitable models were Coale-Kisker and Gompertz-Makeham model. Keywords: mortality,...
Spatial differentiation of migration processes in the Czech Republic
Koňařík, Eliška ; Kraus, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Burcin, Boris (referee) ; Čtrnáct, Pavel (referee)
Spatial differentiation of migration processes in the Czech Republic Abstract The aim of this study is to analyze internal migration in the Czech Republic and assess the extent to which selected indicators contribute to internal migration of the population in the municipalities in the Czech Republic. The first part is focused on the theoretical background for this study and on the discussion of literature. On the basis of literature the indicators were selected for subsequent analysis. The selected indicators are: the number of completed dwellings, the number of jobs, unemployment rate and population density. The next part outlines the development of internal migration in the Czech Republic between 1991-2012. After the subsequent evaluation of the development of selected indicators and internal migration at the municipal level, the relationship of migration and selected indicators for determined years is analyzed through linear regression, exploratory spatial data analysis and geographically weighted regression. The result is an assessment of the impact of selected indicators on internal migration in the Czech Republic and evaluation of the contribution of the methods used for exploration of relationships between migration and selected indicators. Keywords: migration, internal migration, spatial analysis,...
Analysis of the regional development of mortality in NUTS 3 regions in Czechia and Sweden during 1997-2011
Trajer, Jiří ; Burcin, Boris (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
Analysis of the regional development of mortality in NUTS 3 regions in Czechia and Sweden during 1997-2011 Abstract The aim of this thesis is to analyze and describe the development of regional mortality in Czechia and Sweden from 1997 to 2011. Besides of total mortality of both countries and their regions we will focus on the development of regional mortality and regional differentiation of mortality from five most common causes of death for both sexes. These five groups include diseases of circulatory, respiratory and digestive system and neoplasms with external causes of morbidity and mortality. As a basic indicator from selected causes of death is used age-standardized mortality rate and in case of total mortality is also used life expectancy. In both countries the raise of life expectancy and decline of standardized mortality rates were observed during the monitored period. The decline of standardized mortality rates were observed in both countries for almost all causes of death with one exception. The exception was rise of the mortality from respiratory system diseases in Czechia. Keywords: mortality, regional analysis, causes of death, Czechia, Sweden, regional inequalities
Demographic changes in Euroasia during the period 1950-2050 according to the UN population estimates and projections
Čížková, Barbora ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Burcin, Boris (referee)
Demographic changes in Eurasia during the period 1950-2050 according to the UN population estimates and projections Abstract The aim of this thesis is to find out if in post-Soviet countries at least partial convergence trends existed in the population development during the period of political co-existence, whether a differentiation of population development took place there and how these trends have continued in the last two decades. It answers the questions what was the population development of its republics, current independent states since 1950 and what the differences are after the collapse of the Soviet Union, while providing an overview of future population development in this area. The post-Soviet countries always very varied in the level of economic development and cultural diversity and therefore their population development has been significantly differentiated. Central Asia has traditionally been a region with high fertility levels and very high rates of infant mortality, while the west part of the former Soviet Union has been a territory with the lowest level of fertility which has been under the replacement level of fertility for a long period it this area and low infant mortality rate. The post- Soviet countries of the Western Asia have been placed with its population development between...
