Václav Majer and the Social Democratic Party. The Fortunes of the Leading Figure of One Stream within the Czechoslovak Social Democracy
Brož, Jan ; Kocian, Jiří (advisor) ; Zahradníček, Tomáš (referee) ; Horák, Pavel (referee)
The present thesis deals with the political career of a Social Democratic politician Václav Majer. No specialized paper has so far been dedicated to his fifty-year-lasting career, even though his position in history of the Czechoslovak Social Democratic Party is far from negligible. Václav Majer is particularly known as a leader of the "right"/anti-communist wing within the Social Democratic Party during a short spell of Czechoslovak history from 1945 to 1948 (so-called Third Republic). However, he had started his career much earlier at the beginning of the First Czechoslovak Republic in Louny District. In mid-thirties he had moved to Prague and kept on working after the Munich Agreement was signed, and during the Protectorate as well. At the beginning of 1940 he emigrated to the United Kingdom. During the Second World War he has started his career in high level exile politics in London. After the Communist coup d'état in 1948, which had ended the period of the Third Republic, Majer left Czechoslovakia again. He lived and worked in exile till his death. Attention is paid to Majer's position on political scene and to development of his relations with other political actors. My research is based on study of archival documents, as well as study of specialized books, memoirs, newspapers and periodicals.
Diabetes mellitus and breast cancer screening in Czechia in the context of socio-economic factors
Vrchlavská, Eliška ; Kulhánová, Ivana (advisor) ; Brož, Jan (referee)
This thesis focuses on the relationship of diabetes mellitus and participation in mammography screening in women in the Czechia under the influence of socioeconomic status and lifestyle factors, and it is based on the assumption that women with diabetes mellitus participate in secondary prevention of breast cancer less frequently than women without diabetes. Logistic regression analysis methods were used to assess the relationship between participation in mammography screening and diabetes, age, SES (education, household income) and lifestyle (obesity, smoking, alcohol) using European Health Interview Survey (EHIS) data from 2019. The link between SES and lifestyle is assessed for women with diabetes, as well as for women without the diagnosis. The results of this study do not show a statistically significant relationship between diabetes and participation in mammography screening, however, do demonstrate a socioeconomic gradient in participation in screening, both in the diabetes-free and diabetic populations. At the same time, they demonstrate an increased probability of participating in screening for occasional alcohol consumers. Key words: diabetes mellitus, breast cancer, mammography, EHIS, socioeconomic status
Hypoglycemia as a limitation of treatment of diabetes mellitus
Brož, Jan ; Kvapil, Milan (advisor) ; Češka, Richard (referee) ; Karásek, David (referee)
BROŽ, Jan. Hypoglycemia as a limitation of treatment of diabetes mellitus. Prague, 2022. 100 pages. Dissertation thesis. Charles University in Prague, 2nd Faculty of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine. Supervisor Kvapil, Milan. In diabetes mellitus, hypoglycaemia is defined as a condition that is associated with abnormally low blood glucose levels (≤ 3.9 mmol/l), which puts the body at potential risk. The first part of the work is devoted to the treatment of hypoglycaemia associated with physical activity in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. The results showed that standardized moderate-intensity body movement without pre-agreed preventive measures led to hypoglycaemia in all participants. During exercise, the rate of ABG decline ranged from 0.7 mmol/l to 1.7 mmol/l in 10 minutes. During recovery after ingestion of 20 g of carbohydrates, the rate of increase in ABG ranged from 0.6 mmol/l to 1.9 mmol/l in 10 minutes. The amount of glucose administered resulted in recovery from hypoglycaemia in all study participants and maintained glycemia above this level for an additional rest period of 60 minutes after glucose ingestion. The second part of the work was devoted to comparing the characteristics of the results on the one hand of treatment in the same group of patients with type 2...
Right to Local Self-Government
Brož, Jan ; Pomahač, Richard (referee)
The dissertation thesis analyzes the right to local self-government as a right of utmost importance to democracy and rule of law. The thesis aims to delineate the right to self-government, including its European and constitutional dimensions, determine its content, and answer controversial questions surrounding it. The author firstly puts the right to local self-government in the historical context for the historical development since the 2nd half of 19th century has been determining for its current state. The author then focuses on the definition of the right to local self-government, its content, and its holders. To understand its contemporary interpretation, the author also analyzes its European and constitutional dimension in detail, bearing in mind that the European dimension is often overlooked by scholars. The result of the thesis is a complex and detailed definition of the right to local self-government with its content flowing from the European and constitutional dimensions.
Acute complications of diabetes mellitus and it's sequel
Frank, Adrianna Natalie ; Brož, Jan (advisor)
The basis of this thesis is intended to inform the reader about the general complications of acute diabetes mellitus and its consequences. It focuses on the general definitions of the diseases, etiology, morbidity, mortality, pathogenesis of the disease, clinical presentation, treatment, and future developments in hopes of treating the disease. The major focus highlights the differences between diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state, as well as understanding the complications of diabetic hypoglycemia. The most critical effects of these disorders are also emphasized; cerebral edema, vascular thrombosis, and hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis.
Human dignity: universal principle in particular application
Broz, Jan ; Kysela, Jan (advisor) ; Kosek, Jan (referee)
This thesis probes the relevance of objections against newly establishing contemporary paradigm of human dignity, based on connection between dignity and Kantian views on human autonomy, which possess universalistic ambitions. First chapter introduces the fundamental concepts of human dignity during history. The chapter shows there have been evolved at least three different concepts: (i) dignity as an internal value; (ii) dignity as a social status; and (iii) dignity as a certain manner of social behavior. Second chapter consequently deals with courts` techniques regarding the dignity as a legal concept. The conclusions extrapolated from German, Israeli and South African judicial decision-making noticeably support objections raised in contemporary discourse against the abovementioned universalistic concept. In spite of these universalistic ambitions, human dignity represents concept enabling to construe individual human rights through values shared by vast majority in certain jurisdictions. This mindset naturally leads to the limitation of individual freedom rather to its expansion, in the name of an idea that ideal moral order objectively exists. Consequently, the authority of classical human rights is considerably weakened. In third chapter the effort to analyze and construe current judicial practice is...
Continuous Glucose Monitoring
Conde, Catarina Saavedra ; Brož, Jan (advisor)
I chose continuous glucose monitoring for my diploma thesis, based on the importance to improve diabetes care and to reduce the risk of the development and progression of complications. The worldwide prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus has risen dramatically over the past decades. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevalence (CDC) estimated that 366 million individuals would have diabetes by the year of 2030. Diabetes Mellitus is a multi-factorial disease, which requires intensive metabolic control to avoid the chronic complications, and this metabolic control includes the continuous glucose monitory system (CGMS) in comparison to conventional methods of metabolic control, such as glycohemoglobin (HbA1c), capillary and venous glucose determinations, lipidogram and insulin levels controls. Devices for continuous blood glucose monitoring are currently used and they measure the glucose in the interstitial fluid (ISF) that is in equilibrium with blood glucose. These devices provide retrospective glucose values or even real time glucose values. (In this way) continuous monitoring will give multiple glucose measures not just during the day but also during the night and with possibility to predict the glucose values in the future. One of the important functions of this devices is the alarms that notify the patient...
Liberal Theories of the Resolution of Conflicts between Human Rights
Broz, Jan ; Kysela, Jan (advisor) ; Ondřejek, Pavel (referee) ; Hapla, Martin (referee)
Liberal Theories of the Resolution of Conflicts between Human Rights This dissertation is based on two factual assumptions: (i) The existence of conflicts between human rights, which is determined by both the competitive pluralism of human rights and the existence of effective judicial mechanisms articulating the existence of these conflicts. (ii) The existence of a deep interrelationship between the concept of human rights and the concept of liberalism, which influences both structural and substantive aspects of human rights practice. Building on the assumptions just outlined, the aim of this paper is to analyse different ways of practical reasoning about the resolution of human rights conflicts in relation to the liberal human rights ethos. The first two chapters provide the basic conceptual framework relating to the two core concepts of this thesis. The first chapter, devoted to models and theories of rights, introduces Hohfeld's model of the analysis of rights as the most effective way of capturing the two competing theories of rights, namely will (choice) and interest (benefit) theory of rights. The use of Hohfeld's model shows that it is intuitively appropriate to understand the accepted concept of liberty as so-called bilateral liberty. At the same time, the analysis of the two competing...
