Medical Doctors' Language Humour

The diploma thesis focuses on the language humour in medical practice. In its first part, a general characterization of humour and comicality is analysed, based mainly on models by Henri Bergson, Bohuslav Brouk and Ladislav Dvorský. The work then focuses on the medical humour, particularly on humorous stories and jokes with medical setting. A basic typology of medical humour was created based on selected examples by comparing similar signs and elements occurring in the analysed material. The main established typological categories were: homonymy and polysemy, metaphor, metonymy, puns or slang. The diploma thesis also contains a short survey, summarizing the experience of doctors with medical humour directly in medical practice.
The development of Andrej Babiš's Czech from a second-language acquisition viewpoint

This thesis deals with the develompent of Andrej Babiš's Czech. Babiš is a Slovak politician and businessman, who lives in the Czech Republic and whose speeches and media appearances have been part of Czech public discourse for the past few years. The aim of this thesis is to describe how Babiš's language changes over time and how Slovak interference influences it. Hypotheses focus on the number of errors in Babiš's speech, the specific types of errors he makes and the interlingual / intralingual error ratio. The theoretical part of the thesis introduces basic second-language acquisition terminology, which is later used in the practical part. The practical part consists mainly of an error analysis of recordings of interviews with Babiš. Lexical, syntactic, morphological, phonetic, phonological and other differences between Czech and Slovak, which are the source of negative language transfer in Babiš's Czech, are also described. The conclusion shows how parameters of the politician's speech changed over six years and offers an explanation of the change.
Czech schools without borders. Multiple case study

Multiple case study Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to describe the development undertaken by the Czech Schools without Borders since their establishment and to illustrate how they currently operate, what is the outcome of their function especially on the field of Czech language education, and how their executives, pupils and their parents evaluate this functioning and its outcomes. The thesis is structured as a multiple case study focused on two such schools with a longer tradition - the Czech School without Borders in Brussels and the Czech School without Borders in Geneva. Its methodology will be based on ethnographic procedures of data collection and handling. It will focus on analyzing the development of the mentioned Czech Schools without Borders (mainly on the basis of official written documents), on the current operation of these schools (on the basis of an analysis of administrative documents, especially curriculums and learning materials) and its outcomes and on the reflection of the function of Czech Schools without Borders by their executives (school principals, through analysis of semi-structured interviews), current pupils and their parents (through a questionnaire survey).
The placement of the Common Czech in the teaching of Czech as a foreign language

The aim of this thesis is to find out, and then to analyze, whether adult students of Czech as a foreign language can recognize the differences between Literary and Common Czech language, whether they define where they meet them and whether they are able to use the proper words of Literary and Common form of the Czech language appropriately in selected communication situations. Equally important is the discovery of their personal preferences in teaching whether the Common Czech is intended to be taught in an institutionalized environment or not. The questionnaire survey itself is preceded by a theoretical starting point, in which we deal with the definition of Common and Literary Czech language and the characteristics of their most frequent differences. A partial part of the work is also a brief analysis of the selected teaching material, taking into account the way of presentation of Common Czech language.Based on the results of the questionnaire survey, we will present a linguistic recommendation at the end of the work. Family Language Management in Czech-English Families in Lancashire

This thesis presents a research of a family language management in four Czech-English families in Lancashire. Using in-depth semi-structured interviews, it examines various aspects of language ideology and language policy, language use, and the way of teaching and language acquisition of Czech language within the families. The first chapter introduces theoretical findings and essential ideas for the research. The second chapter describes the process of the research, provides information on the examined families, and presents the research questions. The third chapter describes the processing and analysis of interviews, and the fourth presents research results and answers the research questions. The aim of this thesis was to describe and analyse the mentioned aspects of family language management and based on this analysis show how the families approach bilingual education of their children.
Film Titles and Their Translations

The presented diploma thesis deals with titles of films and TV serials made in anglophone countries or in their co-production, in which their titles were either translated from English to Czech, or possibly the original titles were presented to Czech viewers in original form. The thesis analyzes and classifies the structure of the original and translated titles, characterizes the linguistic means used in them and compares the two titles on the basis of the acquired knowledge. For the purpose of analyzing and comparing the titles, a corpus of titles obtained by an excerpt from the Czech-Slovak Film Database (ČSFD.cz), was created. Titles from the years 1990 to 2015 were placed into the corpus, and each year contains the same number of titles. In total, 625 titles of foreign films and TV serials which form the main corpus, and 200 titles of domestic films and TV serials which form the control corpus, were gathered. A short questionnaire illustrating title influence on viewers when choosing a film, is also part of this diploma thesis. Head in the Linguistic Picture of the World in Czech

This thesis focuses on the image of "hlava" (head) in the Czech linguistic picture of the world. It is based on theories and methods of cognitive linguistics. The purpose of the thesis is to describe the structure of the meaning of the word hlava. The paper by I. Vaňková and V. Vitkovskaya was used as a methodological and theoretical starting point. In that paper four semantic profiles of "hlava" are defined. The results of Vaňková and Vitkovskaya were compared with the findings of our research. We try to find out, whether the mentioned profiles are valid on a larger linguistic material, too. Two types of data are analysed - systemic data (especially phraseology, then also etymology of the word, derivatives, compounds and synonyms) and corpus materials (from Czech National Corpus). Then, we also compare the differences in the findings between systemic and textual (corpus) data. Finally, all results are summarized in the cognitive definition of hlava.
Human Body in the Czech Paremiology: An Ethnolinguistic Study

The submitted Master's thesis deals with the linguistic picture of the human body and its parts in proverbs, which are listed in Václav Flajšhans's dictionary Česká přísloví (Czech proverbs). The material is processed using approaches and methodological tools of cognitive linguistics and ethnolinguistics. First of all the theoretical and methodological framework of the thesis is outlined, these are in particular approaches of cognitive linguistics and ethnolinguistics to language and the theory of linguistic picture of the world. These methods are then used to analyse the linguistic picture of human body and its parts in Czech, as arises from proverbs. Then the research paremiological context is defined and possible approaches to proverbs are characterized. The proverb is then defined using specialized literature. Individual chapters that focus on parts of human body present meanings of somatic idioms that are explained with help of monolingual dictionaries. Also there are lists of the most common collocations and idioms in which these somatic idioms occur. The linguistic picture of the human body and its parts in the Czech language picture of the world is then worked out on the basis of the analysed proverbs. Teaching methods of bilingual pupils in Czech School Manchester

This thesis contains two sections: a theoretical section, as well as a section featuring qualitative research with interviews with parents and analysis of children's speeches. The author's aim in the theoretical part, based on previously published academic papers, is to describe what bilingualism is, as well as to describe all its accompanying phenomena. The author briefly describes different types of bilingualism, the acquisition of a mother tongue, and different strategies for both raising children bilingually and bilingual education. In the second chapter the author presents the project Czech School without Borders and introduces the institution Czech School Manchester chaired by Pavla Matásková which follows the idea of the former. The third chapter contains case studies introducing individual preschool pupils' language biographies and their communicative competencies in Czech. The last chapter then sums up and evaluates what methods and materials are used in Czech School Manchester. New Names of Professions

The thesis New Names of Professions is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. In the theoretical part, basic terms from the world of work are defined; the essential term is profession. Furthermore, neologisms are defined in the first part in accordance with professional literature without being confined to denomination of persons. For the purposes of the practical part, new names of professions were excerpted from the list of professions of the employment office and from a list in Učitelské noviny. Their occurrence was further verified using the EDA and Newton media databases and the results of the research were compared with the created list. An alphabetical list of the excerpted professions and a thematically divided list of those professions are an integral part of this work.
