Barrera, Helena ; Belisová, Šárka (advisor) ; Šotolová, Jovanka (referee)
(in English): The present diploma thesis analyses three translations, published with twenty years of difference, of novels featuring the commissioner Maigret character written by a Belgian writer Georges Simenon. As a baseline for our analysis of the translations, the theoretical part of the present paper outlines the current state of research in the topic, provides an introduction into the life and work of the writer. Further, we present an account of detective novels in general and their historical development in France, which will enable us to identify how the Maigret novels fit within the genre and where they differ from its general features. Next, we will review how Simenon's work was received by readers in the French speaking countries and within the Czech environment; we will also present an overview of the publications of the Maigret novels. We will then provide a detailed analysis of the original French version of the novels focusing on introduction and classification of the selected characteristics. Based on the analysis, we discovered certain areas such as translation of local names or translation of expressions of level of certainty, which allow for comparison of the translations in question. Using this comparison, we aim to track any potential development in translation strategy. The...
Czech translations of the Stranger by A. Camus
Maršíková, Eva ; Belisová, Šárka (advisor) ; Šotolová, Jovanka (referee)
The purpose of this paper is to carry out a detailed analysis of two existing translations into Czech of Camus's novel l'Etranger (The Stranger). The first translation by Svatopluk Kadlec was published in 1947, the newer one, by Miloslav Žilina, was first published in 1966. The position of Albert Camus among French authors is not easy to define. Although he was a recognized author, he never ceased to be a stranger among them, as he was of Algerian origin and clearly preferred his native country to France. At the same time, he could never see himself as a genuine Algerian because he was a part of the French minority having power over Algeria at the time. Camus's life is full of such contradictions. For instance, he was said to be a follower of the philosophy of existentialism, embodied by Jean-Paul Sartre, although he was rather trying to oppose this labelling. He thought of himself as an advocate of left-wing ideals he had defended by participating in the Anti-Nazi resistance but refused to accept the revolutionary principle promoted by Sartre. Many of the left-wing intellectuals were also surprised by his equivocal attitude to the Algerian war. The truth is that Camus's opinions were never influenced by ideologies: for him, the highest authorities were his sense of justice and humanism. The novel The...

Dobiášová, Kristýna ; Šotolová, Jovanka (advisor) ; Belisová, Šárka (referee)
1 Abstract The thesis describes the reception and Czech translations of Story of O by Pauline Réage, an erotic novel which was considered scandalous in its time (1954) and became part of the canon of French contemporary prose. In the first part, the thesis characterizes the structure and style of Story of O. It then presents the specific context of its first publication and places the novel in the evolution of French literature. In this part, the thesis also attempts to describe the reception context in the fifties and compares the situation with how the novel is perceived by the current literary scene and cultural domain in general. In this part of the reception analysis, the thesis relies on critical reviews in French periodicals and reactions on the internet. It also mentions the perspective of literary theoreticians on similarly themed works. In the second part, the thesis introduces two Czech translations and attempts to recreate the reasons which led to the publication of the first translation Příběh O.: krásná z Roissy, Tabu, 1991 by Lucie Erbenová and the second translation Příběh O; Návrat do Roissy, Host, 2005 by Matěj Turek. Furthermore, it presents the reasons for the republication in Host in 2013. The analysis of the current reception in the target culture preceeds the focal part of this thesis...

Georges Feydeau: The lady from Maxim's. A comparative analysis and review of translations into Czech
Matějková, Vladimíra ; Belisová, Šárka (advisor) ; Šotolová, Jovanka (referee)
In its theoretical part the present thesis treated the theatrical genre of French farce and described its position and rank in the structure of the Theatre of the Boulevard at the end of the 19t h century. Apart from a short introduction to its history, main dramatists and their key plays are presented, as well as some crucial dramatic techniques and their evolution during the 20t h century. Considering the fact that the main object of the study was a work of one of the most important farce representatives, the thesis focused on the conditions of creating plays and on their reception during the famous Belle Epoque. Another aim was to define first translations and adaptations of vaudevillian farces into Czech with reference to the actual development of the language and the situation on stages at the end of the 19t h and at the beginning of the 20t h century. Besides portraying the background and conditions of the audience's warm reception, the work also briefly introduced the Czech theatres in which this genre was staged, and marked its place among other theatrical genres, taking also into consideration the period in which the Czech translations were made. The heart of the thesis is the personality and the work of French dramatist Georges Feydeau (1863-1921). After having described his life and work,...

Villiers de l'Isle-Adam: Cruel tales in Czech translations
Folberová, Jana ; Belisová, Šárka (advisor) ; Šotolová, Jovanka (referee)
The aim of this diploma thesis has been to analyse four existing Czech translations of Cruel Tales by Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, a French writer from the latter half of the nineteenth century, while also putting this author into a cultural and historical context, and so characterise his work. The thesis has been divided into three chapters. The first chapter is dedicated to the writer's personality, his work and the complex historical period during which he lived and wrote. The reverberations of his work, including Cruel Tales, both in his local and the Czech environment are also dealt with in this chapter. The second chapter closely examines Villiers' most important collection of short stories - Cruel Tales. We start by determining its themes, storylines and characters, then we continue to analyze Villiers' specific style in the selected excerpts. We finish with the conclusion that the author has a style similar to Charles Baudelaire or Guy de Maupassant, however, Villiers never knew such success and glory, nor received the acclaim of his peers, something we hope that our thesis will be a contribution towards in helping to raise new interest in this exceptional French writer.
