A Femme fatale, a Mother, a Builder of Communism or...? The Image of women in Czech fiction of Socialist Realism
Slavíková, Aneta ; Bílek, Petr (advisor) ; Heczková, Libuše (referee)
Keywords Socialist realism, new and old world, new and old human, homo duplex, sublimation and transformation of sexuality. Abstract The bachelor's diploma thesis deals with the image of women in representative Czech prose fiction of socialist realism with an emphasis on representations created in fiction of the 1950s (alternatively taking into account also the so-called period of 'normalization' of the 1970s). For comparative reasons, it also presents some examples from the Soviet fiction of socialist realism, which influenced the Czech context of the 1950s. The analyses of female literary protagonists take into account both the physiognomic aspect of the body as well as mental characteristics. They focus on the semantic and ideological function, which is attributed to distinctive age groups (the characters of girls, mothers, grandmothers) as well as to the function of a binary opposition 'woman as enemy' versus 'good woman' as they had been coined by the official ideology of that era. The analyses include interpretations of the social status of women in society, or more precisely their social status in a 'man`s world' (social status in a working team versus the status in a family). The bachelor's diploma thesis also pays attention to the (usually absent) representations of intimate relationships between a...

Pácalt, Tomáš ; Bílek, Petr (advisor) ; Špirit, Michael (referee)

The thesis aims at some of the basic themes in The Engineer of Human Souls with a connection to the English and American writers. The thesis also references to the works of Premysl Blazicek. These references should discuss cognitive functions of a work of art.

The Metaphor in the Poetry of Social Realism of the 1950s
Ondroušková, Světlana ; Bílek, Petr (advisor) ; Holý, Jiří (referee)
Based on Lakoff's theory of conceptual metaphor the thesis provides an insight into how the myth of the cult of leadership and the "new" land is realised in poetry of Social Realism of the 1950s. The analysis is based on understanding the myth as a "true story". The inicial part thus deals with the way of creating narrative of the leader in Social Realism. The other chapters contemplate on the how the effect of "real" is achieved, particularly using the metaphors of a "building", "container" and orientational metaphors. Concerning the hagiographic nature of the poetry, the thesis aims at explaining certain analogies and discrepancies between the myth of Social Realism and the Christian myth. Story and its "what" and "about what"
Špína, Michal ; Bílek, Petr (advisor) ; Pokorný, Martin (referee)
The thesis deals with the question of interpretation of narrative works of fiction in regard to what the text refers to (what is usually termed reference). On the work of three differently focused authors (Frege, Ortega y Gasset, Shklovsky) it studies reference pushed aside as a thing unimportant or even impossible in art. Structuralism, developing mainly in France after 1960, supplants these questions with exploring the literalness of literary works and their inner relations, allowing narratology to arise. Subsequently, Paul Ricoeur aims for the synthesis of structuralism and hermeneutics. Approaching literary work as discourse, he distinguishes the "what" and "what about" of works, following Frege's distinction between sense and reference (meaning), while reference of a work is not descriptive. In Time and Narrative he uses the term refiguration instead of reference and emphasizes the temporal aspect of literary work and its reception. The thesis is closed with a brief interpretation of Budapest, a novel by Chico Buarque (2003).

The body and corporality in the service of socialist realism
Marešová, Ina ; Bílek, Petr (advisor) ; Schmarc, Vít (referee)
Ina Marešová The body and corporality in the service of socialist realism Abstract The thesis analyses images of the body and embodiment during socialist realism in poetry, prose and periodicals between 1945 and 1956 as well as during the so-called 'normalization' period in Czechoslovakia. Individual forms of embodiment are presented via a system of binary oppositions (individual - collective body, public - private, functional - dysfunctional, male - female, beautiful - ugly etc.), on the basis of which it attempts to demonstrate how the 'natural' symbolism of the body became a tool for representing a specific value system. The thesis describes the coming to terms of socialist realism with the individualised and fragmented body as a legacy of naturalism, the avant-garde and surrealism through the adaptation of the individual body to typified resemblances (images of the enemy, man, woman, leader). These emblematic reductions were, in many cases, taken from popular literature which, despite being rejected by socialism, guaranteed popularity amongst readers and was intelligible to the largest part of the population. The highest level of embodiment was the staging of the collective body, the 'spartakiada' performances, which were co-responsible for creating the myth of national unity, discipline and the will to...
