"The Generation of a Stolen Story" (Hodrová, Kratochvíl, Jamek, Richterová)

This work's aim is to characterize the poetics of "the Generation of a Stolen Story", i. e. the Czech authors born in the 1940s. Its main features, e. g. anti-illusionism, conception of the story and the narrator, autobiographical character etc., are demonstrated on texts. The study is based on prose written by Jiří Kratochvil, Daniela Hodrová and Sylvie Richterová, other authors will be included too. The work is focused on the texts that were created in the 1970s and 1980s.

Translations of Czech Literature into English

This MA thesis focuses on translation of Czech literature into English offering a historical account of its development (mainly from a quantitative perspective). To achieve this, an up-to-date bibliography of Czech literary translation into English has been compiled drawing upon existing research in the field. Covering Czech literary translation into English from its modern beginnings up to 2010, the bibliography contains about 2,500 records of works of Czech authors published either as separate books or in anthologies. Apart from the Excel version of bibliography enclosed to this thesis, the bibliography is also available as a web application enabling easy and ongoing updating in the future. Data collection was the main method of this part of the thesis. In addition, the thesis discusses in detail its methods and methodological issues helping better understand the nature of data and process of their collection. This is particularly useful for translation history researchers and for anyone interested in mapping literary translation into another language. The thesis also gives a basic outline of Czech literary translation into English summarizing major trends both in history and the present day, highlighting 15 most published Czech authors and discussing in more detail the renderings of their works...

Narrative spaces of lyrical poetry

The work is a summary reflection on reading lyrical text and reader's understanding. It consists of two major topics - narratology and poetics of lyric poem - which are dissolved in the body of the work because of their meeting and direct confrontation. The third major circuit also dissolved in the body of work so that it can be functional for each complete part is poetry of Jiří Orten. Narratology now appears as a universal approach to the analysis of art (besides the literary text also film work, theater performances, paintings, etc., etc.). Poetics of lyric poetry is still adrift in a similar methodology. Considerations of this work are based on the assumption that narrative is one of the fundamental noetic structures of the human mind, and that storytelling is organizing principle of the human psyche. Based on this assumption the phenomenon of lyrical poem approaches to man as a kind of narratives that makes up a fictional world. Thoughts on the fictionality of poems, largely based on Doležel concept of fictional worlds is herein supported by Miroslav Červenka studie Fictional worlds of lyrical poetry. Literary Characters of Communist Belief and/or Membership as Specific Character Types in Contemporary Czech Prose Fiction

The diploma thesis analyzes the literary characters of Communist protagonists in the novels and short stories published in Czech literature of the last fifteen years. We assume that the time distance dynamically changes the concepts of the representations of the Communist protagonists. The aim of this work is not only to define the stereotypical traits that are associated with the figure of the Communists, but it also attempts to identify the practices of the lifting up of such protagonists from the traditional semiotic connotations. The thesis analyzes the characters of the Communists from the point of the thematic units, as they seem to be the most common semantic units for standard readers.

The Transfer of a Literary Text into Radio Drama

This work describes the transformation of a literary work Válka s mloky through a form of radio drama script to the final form of this dramatic radio form. This work focuses on specific resources, which have the radio dramaturge and the director for their work with literature and also this work want to characterize the new quality that this work gets. This work also situates this radio play to the historic context of radio creation and also to context of the society in the Czechoslovakia.

Facing the loss: Loss figures in the postwar central european literature

My paper will focus upon the theme of loss in postwar Central European literature in works of Nabokov, Bachmann, Bernhard, Handke, Esterhazy, and Chwin, which are narrated as a modern subject's testimony of loss. My goal is to make a collection of loss figures (inspired by Roland Barthes's Fragments of a Lover's Discourse) to examine the nature of testimony in relation to the acts of writing. Any analytical inquiry that focuses itself on the literary testimony as a work of art will have to deal with these textual mechanisms: transparency, suppression, deleting, distancing, turning over, heaviness and reduction.

The "Phenomenom" of Czech Serialized TV Tale Genre "Večerníček"

The diploma thesis deals with the Czech cultural phenomenon Vecernicek. Three interpretative sections of the thesis show the possibility to place Vecernicek among modern fairytales as well as they prove its continuity to the traditional fairytale output. At the same time, the thesis draws on distictions between traditional and modernized poetics. Choice series are interpreted with respect to intermediality and specific form of Vecernicek as a TV programme designed for pre-school and and primary-school children. .

The Poetics of Space in Ota Filip's Novels

This thesis is focused on poetics of places and space in the novels of Czech author Ota Filip (*1930). The analysis of individual spaces displayed in Filip's work wants to demonstrate the importance of these places for the narrative construction of the autor's novels. This thesis aims to show the importance of displayed space and individual spaces for the overall sense of the fictional world in the Filip's work. The methodological basis of the thesis is the study of the Polisch scientist Janusz Sławiński: Space in Literature: Basic Division and Introductory Commonplace (2002 [1978]). Research of space displayed in the literary work based on the text of a particular novel.

A green canon? What, how and why "the colourful and the green" read.

The thesis is based on questionnaire survey conducted among 136 so called "green and colourful" respondents. The term "the colourful and the green" comes from the professor of environmental sociology, Hana Librová, and refers to people living the ecologically beneficial lifestyle that can be characterized by voluntary or intentional modesty. The target of the survey was to find out whether these people are influenced in their lifestyle by books or which books would articulate their worldview the best; what books they resonate with. Often repeated titles formed a "green influential literary canon" that is further analyzed in the thesis. First, the canon as a whole is examined, second the three most frequent books are studied with an ecocritical approach. In the canon, a minimum titles from the field of deep ecology, nature writing as well as science fiction or utopia were registered. Despite the expectation, there were many books related to New Age movement in the canon as well as pop-cultural spiritual writings. Nevertheless, books concerning native americans, together with eco- philosophical works largely dominated. Fictional Worlds Theories. An Analysis and Interpretation of the Recent Development of the Theories of Fictional Worlds.

The thesis analyzes the possibilities of application of the fictional worlds theory as a possible basis for a different literary-theoretical approach to the study of literary texts. Not being a mere literature research, the thesis inquires into issues which are necessarily connected with the fictional worlds theory and which have been so far rarely dealt with, if discussed at all. It contributes to the discussion on advantages and drawbacks of the mimetic approach and of the fiction theory, it analyzes the possible applicability of the fictional worlds theory in literary history, it attempts to determine the correlation between the Seymour Chatman's textual types and the fiction theory nomenclature, and last but not least the thesis deals with the possibilities of this theory in the fictional worlds of lyrical poetry.
