Textual Transformations of Czech Cover-versions of Foreign Lyrics

(in English) This bachelor's thesis deals with Czech cover versions of English songs created during the period of normalization. In the first part of the thesis, a more general cultural framework is defined, in which the cover version is understood as a set of mechanisms of cultural transfer. It is therefore also necessary to take into account the socio-political context (i.e. especially the adaptation to the needs of the past regime's ideology). Although, this thesis is primarily literary-theoretical, it also takes into account historical and musically-theoretical interpretations. The second part of this thesis mainly focuses on the actual comparison of individual text pairs, which is carried out on the basis of an analysis of the preservation of the factual content of the text components (narrative and phonetic components, metaphorical apparatus).

Semiotics of Comics. Communication of text-image media.

Semiotics of Comics. Communication of text-image media. Abstract This dissertation thesis focuses on the ways in which comics transfer messages and what tools they use in a communication situation. The hypothesis of the work consists in the assumption that the comics in the process of communication works with specific and at the same time medially shared means. These procedures are viewed from a philosophical and empirical (artistic-scientific) point of view. Following the analysis of the way of handling certain types of signs within the framework of visual-text works of art, the concept of compon, which means composed placement of a figure, will be introduced and described. The large part of the work is devoted to this term and, in a broader sense, it also represents evidence of that paradoxical specific and shared style of communication of audiovisual media. Attention will be paid to the description of the comics code and principles that participate at various levels in the constitution of comics works, their form and the character of the narrative. The theoretical basis is represented by the works of Roland Barthes, Umberto Eco, Jurije Lotman, W. J. T. Mitchell and Hilary Chute. The Theme of Metamorphosis in Daniela Hodrová's Poetics

The bachelor's thesis deals with the poetics of the Czech novelist and literary theorist Daniela Hodrová, with a special focus on her last three published novels Vyvolávání (Malvern, 2010), Točité věty (Malvern, 2015) and Ta blízkost (Malvern, 2019). The unifying moment of these novels is sensed and subsequently sought in the actualization of the myth of the descent into the underworld. This is already manifested in earlier prose, and is most prominently thematized in Theta (Československý spisovatel, 1992) as a descent into Dante's Inferno, by which Hodrová means the City of Torment. The author's most recent novels further develop this motif in relation to the Sumerian myth of Innana's descent into the underworld and the Orphic myth of Ovid. The focus of the thesis is an intended narratological analysis of these myths and their meaning in the context of the author's work. Processes of adaptation of Czech singer-songwriters' poetics in the 1990s

The bachelor thesis focuses on the phenomenon of Czech singer-songwriting in the context of continuities and discontinuities of the 1990s, which have been rather neglected by previous research due to its centre of gravity in the preceding period. Through a motivic analysis of the contemporary song production of selected singer-songwriters ("poets-with-guitars", "folk- poets", but also "folk-outsiders"), it reflects on the possible transformation of their authorial poetics and the search for new themes, or, on the contrary, shows the process of canonization and the contextual attachment of the personality and its production to the past regime. Part of the work, therefore, is to trace the filling of the free media space by the peculiar market production of the chosen singer-songwriters on the background of Bourdieu's concept of the literary field. It is precisely the research into the content of music and book media that is meant to illustrate who was releasing new and who was merely "recycling" old, but period-rooted hits. The theological reflection on the selected motives in contemporary Czech poetry

The aim of this thesis is a theological reflection of contemporary Czech poetry. Specifically, the thesis deals with collections Úloža by Ivan Martin Jirous, Darmata by Petr Hruška and Osip míří na jih by Marie Iljašenko. It focuses mainly on their concepts of man, the world and transcendence. The work is divided into three chapters, the first two being a necessary prelude for chapter three. The first part of the thesis presents some of the ways in which theology can relate to poetry. Language, imagination and metaphor are presented as common fields of both theology and poetry. Furthermore, this chapter defines two possible theological approaches to poetry: The theological approach to poetry as an object of theology and as a subject of theology. In the second chapter, there is literary analysis of the collections, which is necessary for the third part. In the third part, which is the main focus of this thesis, a theological reflection of selected collections is presented. Its aim is not only to examine whether and how the selected themes in the collections correlate with their conception in theology, but also to present what they may be inspirational for theology.

Inflow and Influence: Literature in Times of Bookstagram and Book Influencers

The thesis mostly focuses on Czech Instagram culture of book influencers. It is formed by characteristics of Instagram as a medium and by analysis of the currect situation on the book market. Instagram is shaping a space for bookstagram, bookstagram therefore has to be shaped by Instagram. The text surveys, how bookstagram influences literature, how it affects current reader, where does it come from and what is the nature of its influence. The text also overlaps in the field of book market crisis, erudition and fast reading, book as a photographed object and the aesthetics of reading. Further the thesis is focused on specific profiles of book influencers, it characterizes their rhetoric and aesthetics and how they treat literature. The main aiming of the thesis is created by a question after the influence of mentioned phenomena, what changes happen in literature thank to or because of them and what does the influencer represent for literature and reading culture. The thesis is based mainly on historical overviews of history of reading. In the conclusion a few other related themes are outlined, one of them is, if and how it is possible to do the popularization of literature well.

Changes of narrative strategies in contemporary Japanese literature

in English This thesis maps the changes, that occurred in Japanese literature during the late 1970's and early 1980's. Literature written in this time period is often associated with the phenomena of postmodernism. This thesis is based on the presumption, that Japanese postmodernity is a historical phenomenon, and its shape is closely related to the shape of Japanese modernity before and after the World War II. The aim of this thesis is to analyze these postmodern tendencies in their historical continuity in relation to the modern literary discourse, and by doing that fill in the gap between modern and contemporary Japanese literary development. The methodological basis of this thesis is in the Western discourse about postmodernism, from which it borrows a formal framework, and at the same time in the works by Japanese critics, which give the concept of postmodernism a necessary specific localized content. The analysis of respective representative literary texts is based on how they were perceived in contemporary literary magazines and in the press, and on close reading of them. The analysis of the texts is based on the fictional worlds theory. This thesis is divided into two larger parts. Character as a function and character as an individual in the context of Czech fantasy literature

The bachelor thesis focuses on analyzing characters from selected works of Czech fantasy literature. It makes use of Brian Attebery's theory of character in a fantasy narrative and deals with the presence of characteristics of actor and actant. The thesis is divided into several parts. The first chapters provide the theoretical background and define the term fantasy and its origin, as well as the social reach of the genre. They also deal with attributes of terms actor and actant as well as archetypes and archetypal characters. The practical part of the thesis applies this knowledge to analyze selected characters from three works of Czech fantasy literature: Ve službách klanu by Miroslava Žamboch, Psí zima by Petra Neomillnerová and Asfalt by Štěpán Kopřiva. Reading Faulkner's Minds

The present dissertation focuses on the work of William Faulkner in relation to the concept of mind as conceived by the second wave cognitive sciences. This concept radically challenges previous notions such as cartesian dualism and physicalism which equates mind with the brain and puts forth the human mind as embodied, embedded in the environment, extended beyond the skin, enacted in a particular situation, and encultured, being both a product and a producer of culture. Such a vision changes the landscape of phenomena that fall under the label "mind" and has implications for the study of minds within literature as well. Literature and narrative art constitute a rich source of insights on the human mind and are treated here as an autonomous discourse on human cognition without necessarily seeking confirmation by the sciences. Since it represents a new discipline among approaches to Faulkner's oeuvre, I discuss cognitive literary studies and their relation to cognitive sciences as well as more traditional literary studies arguing for a cognitive approach to literature guided by the discipline's distinctive methods, goals and object of study. Narratological category of the narrator and its use in the didactic context

The key focus of this master thesis is to transform the problem of narrator into school environment along with other categories related to various modes of narratives. The first chapter analyzes coursebooks of literary theory used in high schools that have been published since late 1980s up to present where the definition of narrator takes place. The goal is to stress out the narrator approach in didactic texts and its major differences in interpretations of another thesis from the field of narratology. The second chapter includes the key objectives of the thesis and represents didactical transformation of mentioned terms, which is based on the critical reflection of the coursebooks. The conclusion is composed of practical handouts consisted of foreign and native text extracts and includes related questions concerning particular narrative term.
