Fairy-tales by Karel and Josef Čapek in Chinese Translations
Tomášová, Kateřina ; Andrš, Dušan (advisor) ; Lomová, Olga (referee)
This thesis aims to analyze the Chinese translations of literary fairytales by Karel and Josef Capek, and the role of these translations within the target culture. The initial chapter gives a brief overview of the historical background of children's literature development and literary fairytales development within the cultures of Europe and China. We will outline the main issues in translating children's literature and will further analyze the role translations for children play in the Chinese literature. The core of the thesis is the analysis of two contemporary Chinese translations - Liu Xingcan's translation of fairy-tales by Josef and Karel Capek and Ren Rongrong's translation of a collection of fairy-tales Devatero pohadek by Karel Capek. The analysis is based on the polysystems theory and follows the model for translation analysis by Gideon Toury. On the basis of analyzing each level of the translated text, we will attempt to lay down "the underlying concept of translation", i.e. to assess whether the translation aims to meet the norms of the target culture or those of the source culture. The conclusion, based on the findings of our analysis, will attempt to define the status of these translations in the target literature of China and the way they enrich this literature. Keywords children's...
Developing Reading Skills among Students of Chinese as a Foreign Language
Válková, Eliška ; Zádrapa, Lukáš (advisor) ; Andrš, Dušan (referee)
5 ABSTRACT The present paper deals with the development of reading skills of adult learners of Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) in Czech language schools and its support provided by three different Chinese language course books. Even though there are various Chinese language course books available on the market, the attention these pay to reading comprehension and its development, is still rather limited. The present master thesis proposes classroom techniques which might be used to address this problem during CFL lessons. The first chapter presents findings and recommendations based on research into the development of foreign language reading skills in general, which are, in the second chapter, subsequently followed by a summary of research findings focusing specifically on teaching reading in CFL. The demands on course books raised by researchers in both fields are then applied to reading texts and accompanying exercises included in three pre-intermediate level CFL course books, New Practical Chinese Reader (Liu et al., 2002), Boya Chinese (Lǐ et al., 2005) and Discover China (Qi et al., 2010). The outcome of the the thesis consists of 21 designed lesson plans which propose solutions to some of the issues raised in the theoretical part of the thesis. The lesson plans indicate how course book texts...
The motif of chrysanthemum in Song ci
Zábranská, Lenka ; Lomová, Olga (advisor) ; Andrš, Dušan (referee)
The thesis traces emergence of chrysanthemum, a favourite symbol in Chinese poetry, and discusses its various uses within the context of the Song ci poets. The chapters of the thesis focus on precising connotations and their transformations related to the chrysanthemum as one of the most frequently appearing flower motifs in Chinese literature and specification of the literary-historical description of the Song ci and yongwu evolution process. The thesis also aims to present connotations reflecting the evolution of Song lyrics from non-serious tunes to the official poetry, shift in using the motif in shi and ci poems and the presence of Tao Yuanming's and Qu Yuan's chrysanthemum motif in Song ci. It describes the extent in which the genre of Song ci modifies the meaning of motif; how much of the traditional meaning referring to Qu Yuan and Tao Yuanming is preserved and how does the ci genre influence traditional meaning and the general cultural cognizance attached to the motif. Attention is also paid to the process in which the meaning empties itself and becomes an ornamental motif indicating occasion and season of the year and evoking certain mood. Key words: chrysanthemum, Tao Yuanming 陶淵明, Song dynasty, ci 詞 poem, yongwu 詠物, flower motif

Čavojská, Lenka ; Andrš, Dušan (advisor) ; Lomová, Olga (referee)
The main aim of the thesis is to provide an analysis of the prose Hongchen by the contemporary writer Ma Jian, and shed some light on the semantic structure of the work. The prose Hongchen is a literary depiction of the author's three-year journey in China and two-month wandering around Tibet in the mid nineteen eighties. The first part of the thesis presents Ma Jian's writing in a wider literary-historical context with a special regard to genre analysis, hence chapter three examines the tradition of travel literature in China and closely defines this literary genre. In the analytical part special attention is given to changes in the protagonist and his interaction with his surroundings. It also introduces the prose Hongchen in the context of the author's short story writing with the theme of Tibet in a collection of short stories Stick out your tongue or everything is just a void.
Du Fu - Poems from the Thatched Cottage
Tkáčová, Marína ; Lomová, Olga (advisor) ; Andrš, Dušan (referee)
Thesis abstract The aim of this thesis is to provide a detailed topical analysis of the poems written by Du Fu during the first half of his Sichuan period (760 - 762), traditionally considered to be one of the happiest periods of his life. In these poems the themes of everyday experiences of poet's life in the country-side including his view of himself are highly remarkable. Based on the analysis we attempt to capture author's specific world view in this very period of his life, to examine how far these poems are idyllic, and to identify the function of individual motifs in the poems. The first part of this work contains a brief introduction to the context of Du Fu's life and work. The second, analytic part, introduced by a chapter discussing Du Fu's Sichuan period in more detail, is divided into four major sections - everyday life, social contacts, poet's view of himself, and motif of alcohol. In subdivisions of these sections the use of individual motifs is examined and exemplified always in one or two whole poems and fragments of other ones. All the examples of poems presented include a working translation into Slovak language. The conclusion of this work is that although the secondary sources are right to say that plenty of Du Fu's poems from this period are idyllic in nature, there is also evidence to...
Metaphor in poetry of the "metaphysical poet" Bian Zhilin
Kapounová, Karina ; Lomová, Olga (advisor) ; Andrš, Dušan (referee)
Thesis abstract The main aim of this thesis is the analysis of Bian Zhilin's metaphors in his early collections Fish Eyes (Yumu ji 鱼目集) and Leaves of Three Autumns (Sanqiu cao 三秋草). On the basis of this analysis we try to answer some questions - to what extent the Bian Zhilin's imagery relates to the hypothesis about the creativity of modern metaphors, whether there is an analogy with the metaphors in French symbolist's pieces. We will also focus on correspondences and differences between Bian Zhilin's metaphors and metaphor in traditional Chinese poetry. In the second chapter we deal with the Bian Zhilin's life which in some aspects marks his future work and we are engaged in the historical background of his life, too. Above all we focus on the development of literature. The approaches to metaphors, which are used in the fourth analytical part, are analysed in the third chapter. The fourth chapter is the core of this essay and it contains five subsections. On the basis of the cited poems and their translations we strive to characterise individual topics (personal and general symbols, synesthesia, personification, sources of imagery and the relation between the tenor and vehicle of the metaphor) and relate this analysis to the initial hypothesis about the creativity of modern metaphors and the presumption...

Silk as a motif in Tang poetry and related meanings
Slabáková, Eliška ; Lomová, Olga (advisor) ; Andrš, Dušan (referee)
Sericulture has been a part of Chinese culture since ancient times. The silk dress was a symbol of the social privileges of the educated elite and the court. On the other hand, silk production and silk processing were also part of the everyday life of common villagers. For Chinese society, silk was an important material both economically and culturally. This diploma thesis analyzes how various aspects of life in Tang society, which were connected to silk, are portrayed in the works of the middle Tang poets Wang Jian 王建 (cca. 751-830) and Bai Juyi 白居易 (772-846). This paper identifies various themes and describes meanings that silk as a literary motif helps to express.
