Jurčová, Lívia ; Ťupek, Pavel (advisor) ; Ženka, Josef (referee)
The thesis explores Ṭariq Ramaḍan, a significant Muslim intellectual primarily active in Europe, where he has long been engaged in the issues of Islam in European context. His erudition, charisma, and earned reputation as a mediator between Islam and secularism have brought him great social and academic influence but have also allowed him to actively participate within the sphere of European politics. However, on a global scale, Ramaḍan is a controversial figure, with his critics pointing out that he presents rather inconsistent opinions and adjusts his discourse based on his current audience whereby trying to appeal to both Muslims and non-Muslims, which raises doubts about his true beliefs and intentions. Through content analysis of his official website, the student has examined and compared Ramaḍan's statements in Arabic and English, representing his discourse towards both Muslim and non- Muslim audiences. The focus was laid on the most controversial topics, namely stoning and the role of women in society. The analysis has revealed that Ramaḍan's statements in Arabic and English are indeed inconsistent. In the conclusion, the student proposes possible reasons and intentions for Ramaḍan's choice of inconsistent discourse, drawing from knowledge about Ramaḍan's background but also the...

Co-existence of Christians and Muslims in contemporary Jordan
Družinina, Naděžda ; Bielický, Viktor (advisor) ; Ženka, Josef (referee)
The goal of my bachelor's thesis is to investigate the coexistence of the Christian minority community and the Muslim majority in the contemporary Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Divided into three parts, the work focuses on the prerequisites for the peaceful coexistence between these two communities. It can be assumed that the right to free belief and religious education enshrined in the Jordanian constitution from 1952, as well as the specific organization of Jordanian society, which features certain aspects of a tribal society, facilitate the peaceful coexistence of Christians in a country with a majority Muslim population. To prove or disprove this assumption, I focused on the following research questions. What is the legal status of Christians in Jordan de facto and de iure? What is their role in the political system? What are the reasons that in Jordan, unlike other countries in the Middle East, the inhabitants of two different religions are able to coexist without major conflict? And finally, what problems does the Jordanian Christian community face? Key words: Christians in Jordan, Christian rights in Jordan, Christians in Jordanian politics, Christian-Muslim relations, religious minorities in the Middle East
The Influence of Older Architectural Traditions of the Islamic World on the Mosque Architecture of Cairo from the Beginning of the 19th Century to the Present
Rudiš, Martin ; Ženka, Josef (advisor) ; Nováček, Karel (referee) ; Klapetek, Martin (referee)
This dissertation focuses on the continued influence of older architectural traditions of the Islamic world, or the tendency of architects to refer to these traditions, on mosque architecture in Cairo from the beginning of the 19th century to the present day. It not only provides answers as to what role this phenomenon has played and how this has manifested itself, but also to the reasons behind it, proving that a key factor was the involvement of European architects, influenced by historicism, who were active in Egypt during the 19th century. The core part of the work consists of sixteen case studies divided into four subperiods. For each, specific older traditions are identified, which served as the architect's source of inspiration. Based on a description and analysis of the buildings, this work traces the gradual changes in the approaches of the architects and their adoption of elements, forms and solutions. The results reveal that these approaches were guided by the concurrent influence of Western architecture, i.e. historicism, later modernist architecture, postmodernism, and the global architectural trends resulting from them. The modern architecture of Cairo's mosques is therefore largely determined by the conflict between tradition and modernity.
