Perceptions of Justice in Postmodern Societies
Heráčková, Lucie ; Mazák, Jaromír (advisor) ; Šubrt, Jiří (referee)
Lucie Heráčková Abstract Factors for interpreting the social world as just The concept of justice refers to the interrelationship between the individual and the general welfare. However, the concept of "justice" is not clearly defined in sociology. According to Emile Durkheim, justice is a state that is required by social groups to maintain cohesion. Scheonfeld & Mestrovic (1989) argue that justice can be seen as equivalent to Durkheim's solidarity given that the means for acquiring justice are important for maintaining solidarity in society. Modern sociology often distinguishes between distributive and procedural justice (Šanderová, 2017), the former noting the perceived fairness of the resulting distribution of rewards and sanctions, while the latter the fairness of the process that leads to this distribution. For distributive justice, it may be analytically important to distinguish between the level of distribution of goods (who receives valuable resources and for what) and the distribution of sanctions (how and who will be punished if they act against the common good) (Šanderová, 2017). A situation where an individual's perception of justice is positive is a desirable phenomenon for the maintenance of social order. Conversely, a negative perception of justice promotes alternative actions and becomes a...
O čarodějnícich a duších mezi námi: Zkoumání jak nadpřirozené bytosti rozkrývají sociální procesy v urbánním Pakistánu
Wasif, Zoya ; Šubrt, Jiří (advisor) ; Německý, Marek (referee)
One glaring condition of the enlightenment and modernity is that human beings have been placed at the center of the world in majority of academic disciplines, a condition which the Social Sciences have not been spared from. In an attempt to follow in the footsteps of scholars such as Robert Orsi and his research on presence within Catholicism, the project aims to explore how we as scholars can be more accepting of and hospitable of multiple temporalities, particularly within the field of sociology. This project aims to uncover the sociological significance of subjects experiences when narrate accounts that allude to supernatural beings. I want to display how such encounters add to our understanding of people's perception of their role within society and how their behavior towards others is implicitly shaped by such beliefs.

Duffek, Adam ; Šubrt, Jiří (advisor) ; Voříšek, Michael (referee)
Globalization and its Influence on Social Identities Author: Adam Duffek Thesis Title: Globalization and its Influence on Social Identities University: Charles University Prague Thesis Advisor: PhDr. Alemayehu Kumsa, Ph.D. Place and date: Prague, May 2023 Abstract This thesis analyzes the influence of globalization on social identities. The main thesis is that globalization influences social identities in twofold ways. Firstly, social identities are enormously strengthened by processes of globalization and they are becoming very complex, on the other hand, globalization can weaken and fragment these identities as well. This thesis uses the term identity in the context of sociology as social identities that are created in a social context and are creating social reality. Globalization is perceived as a significant influencer of the post-modern era. Globalization is multidimensional and influences many aspects of social reality and undoubtedly also social identities. Three main spheres of globalization, that are also the subject of analyses of this thesis, and have also primal influence on social identities are the economic, political, and cultural sphere. Each is responsible for the strengthening and weakening of these identities in a specific way in specific contexts. The primary product of globalization is...
Unlearned Social Change: A Study of Transitory Order
Tomášek, Marcel ; Šubrt, Jiří (advisor) ; Maslowski, Nicolas (referee) ; Rasiński, Lotar (referee) ; Červinková, Hana (referee)
The thesis is a qualitative study of grey zones and grey phenomena on the border of economy and politics in the Czech Republic from 1995 to 2013. The widely ingrained presupposition that the closing dot to the 'transition phase' was the Europeanization process as connected to the procedures associated with becoming an EU member is commonly spread and taken for granted. Given verifying this presumption, the research field has been divided into two distinctive subperiods: the first one investigates patterns of practice as they were associated primarily with the stage of the change, which may be labelled as post-privatization/secondary privatization (1995-2004). The second subperiod in focus (2004-2013) has been the period from entering the EU in 2004 to the shockwave of reconstitution of the Czech political scene in 2013 after the government-parliamentary-clan-clientelist structures collision and the resignation of the Czech government. The empirical sources for the inquiry have been primarily the particular instances of happenings and problematic undertakings in the overlap of politics and economy as they are registered and referred to, for the given period of 1995-2013, in the weekly periodicals - Respekt, Ekonom. The theoretical grounding of the study has been developed from identifying four waves...
