Red algae (Rhodophyta) in freshwater ecosystems
Štifterová, Anna ; Neustupa, Jiří (advisor) ; Škaloud, Pavel (referee)
This bachelor thesis is focused on an interesting group freshwater red algae (Rhodophyta). This group comprises organisms from quite distant evolutionary clades, nevertheless sharing similar ecological requirements. They mostly occur in unpolluted lotic ecosystems. In the theoretical part, I summarized publications dealing with the general and ecological aspects of distribution of these algae (mainly of the genus Batrachospermum). For example, the issue of seasonal populational dynamics, or their role in succession of benthic algal communities. The practical part includes floristic data on findings of various species of freshwater red algae, predominantly from the Czech Republic. Furhermore, it includes observation on seasonality of a single population of Batrachospermum gelatinosum.
Community structure and diversity of corticolous algae in micro- and mesoscales
Štifterová, Anna ; Neustupa, Jiří (advisor) ; Hrčková, Kristýna (referee)
This diploma thesis was focused on the community ecology of corticolous subaerial cyanobacteria and algae. Altogether 54 morphotypes were identified on the surface of the tree bark in the Nature Reserve Březina in České středohoří Mts., Czech Republic. Compared to publish data on tropical and subtropical habitats, high morphological diversity of these organisms in a temperate region was thus recognized. Coccoid green algae - most of them belonging to the class Trebouxio-phyceae - dominated. In a study focused on the algae community structure at small spatial scales (such as a single tree trunk), the temporal factors were found as the most important factor influencing the species composition. The height of a sample on trunks and type of bark roughness seemed to influence the species richness, yet the differences were not significant. The alpha-diversity and species composition of corticolous algal communities among individual trees were strongly influenced by host tree species. The pH of the bark surface also had significant impact on species composition. Generally, trees with lower pH of the bark surface (alder, spruce) had lower species richness, whereas trees with more alkaline bark surface (ash, beech, maple) had higher alpha-diversity values. Considering the generally efficient dispersal ability of...
Diversity of green algae identified as lichen photobionts
Vaiglová, Zuzana ; Škaloud, Pavel (advisor) ; Štifterová, Anna (referee)
This thesis is focused on green algae, which have been recorded as lichen photobionts. The thesis consists of description of genera from the green algal from classes Ulvophyceae, Trebouxiophyceae and Chlorophyceae. I focused on phylogenetics position of genera, I define their morphology and I summarize their participation in lichen symbiotic relationships. I compare evidences based on the traditional morphological methods and modern molecular data. The following genera can be stated to uncertainly represent lichen photobionts: Trentepohlia, Cephaleuros, Phycopeltis and Dilabifilum from the class Ulvophyceae, and Dictyochloropsis, Chloroidium, Elliptochloris, Coccomyxa, Diplosphaera, Auxenochlorella, Myrmecia, Asterochloris, Trebouxia, Coccobotrys and Leptosira from the class Trebouxiophyceae. The genera Chlorella and Stichococcus are morphologically poorly defined, but they are commonly reported as lichen photobionts. Prasiola associates with the mycobiont, but the identity of their partnership is not certainly defined. The lichen symbiosis of genera Parachloroidium, Pseudochlorella and Gloeocystis has not been confirmed by molecular methods, so far. Key words photobiont, lichen, green algae, Chlorophyta, diversity, phylogeny, Trebouxiophyceae

Molecular diversity and species concept of subaerial green alga Trentepohlia (Ulvophyceae, Chlorophyta)
Šafránková, Michala ; Škaloud, Pavel (advisor) ; Štifterová, Anna (referee)
This Bachelor thesis discusses green subaerial algae of the genus Trentepohlia (Ulvophyceae, Chlorophyta). Firstly, I focus on general description of the family Trentepohliaceae and the genus Trentepohlia, especially on morphology, ultrastructure and reproduction. Secondly, I summarize the knowledge of the literature available about the species of the genus Trentepohlia living in the Czech Republic. I also concern with the symbiotic relationship of these algae with other organisms and with some curiosities of their growth leading to ecological and other important consequences. Finally, in this thesis I introduce the issues of the species delimitation using traditional morphological methods in contrast to molecular approaches. There are several facts resulting from this thesis. The genus Trentepohlia is a green alga of the Chlorophyta lineage curious in some aspects, mostly due to presence of some structures among the cells (such as plasmodesmatas, MLS, carotenoids, etc.). There is also a problem of determination of individual species. For almost two hundred years, this problem has been solved by use of morphological features. However, molecular methods are often in contrast to these traditional methods. Therefore, reorganization on a genus level is essential, based on the discovery of...
