Analysis and Comparison of Dramatizations of The Wind in the Willows

This diploma thesis deals with an analysis and comparison of dramatizations of The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, a book which ranks among the British children's classics. The paper examines to what extent the dramatizations correspond to the book, whether and why they deviate from the original text, and what consequences these changes have. The thesis focuses on four dramatizations – a play by Alan Alexander Milne called Toad of Toad Hall, Alfa Theatre production of The Wind in the Willows, a Walt Disney short animated film The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, and Terry Jones´s adaptation of The Wind in the Willows to a feature film.
In the thesis, firstly the book and then the dramatizations are analyzed in terms of the theme and genre, characters, setting, composition and language use. Subsequently, the dramatizations are examined and compared with regards to the transformation processes – selection, condensation, substitution, amplification, and changes in composition and language. In the final chapter, I summarize my findings and draw the conclusion.

Turning nonsense poetry into a performance

This bachelor thesis describes the process of staging a performance with two adolescent girls who attend drama classes at art school. Nonsense poetry became the subject of our interest. Both girls had worked on interpretation of this type of poetry in their recitation classes. However, creating a poetic production was new experience and an opportunity to explore staging possibilities.
I drew on their skills and experience gained in previous drama studies as well as their knowledge of other fields of art. Thus, in the performance, we made the best of the ability to work with hyperbole, use physical expression, and evoke the atmosphere by sound and music.
In respective chapters of the thesis, the students I worked with are introduced both in terms of their experience with drama studies and in terms of developmental psychology. Moreover, I analyze our subject, explain the dramaturgical and directorial concept and describe our work on developing outlined situations. Furthermore, changes in initial concept and their causes are detailed. Finally, I take performance re-runs into consideration and examine their effect on the final version of the production.

During our life, there comes a lot of situations which we have to deal with and which need to solve. Such situations as decease, invalidism, health disability, poorness, job loose or loneliness. Some of these situations we are able to handle ourselves, some of them with help of family members or friends, but we are not able to handle all of the events and we are not able to secure basic life needs. In such situations, help of the state in context of its social politics, is needed. Social politics in Czech republic is divided in three branches ? next to social insurance we have state and social support and social help which is mentioned as the third branch of social protection. System of social help constructs certain standard where its basic part is about individuals rights to live his life. Social help is realized by services and social benefits. Between social benefits is also included contribution for social care that is served to individuals dependent on help of another physical being and that is topic of this dissertation. Person is considered as dependent on help from another person in four grades ? from light to full dependence. In order of dependence level and the dependent person age the amount of benefit is derived. Between the receivers of social benefits are included seniors and disabled people. By providing the benefits, the state participates in social service realization that are administered at home or in social service institutions.
