The restoration of Czechoslovak social democracy in 1968: Dialogue of two opinion movements
Sommer, Patrik ; Štefek, Martin (advisor) ; Broučková, Kristina (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to present the formation process of the Czechoslovak social democratic party during the Prague spring era. The attempt to restore the party in 1968 took place in an atmosphere of significant liberalization and democratization of the then regime, which consecutively made possible the creation of many independent organizations among which the Social democratic party was included. First, we will state what claims the efforts to restore the party were based on and what the form of the newly emerged formation should have been. The thesis will then attempt to analyse the relationship of the Communist Party to this independent movement and its development against the background of changes in the political and social climate during a few months in 1968. The text will present what power tools the ruling party used to prevent this activity and how successful it was in these actions. The role of the press, both partisan and opposition, played in this attempt of polarization of the system will also be outlined. The thesis will be limited by the act of invasion of the Warsaw Pact troops, that is, the act that both the restoration of the social democratic party played a role in, and that subsequently dashed the attempt of given party's restoration. Keywords: prague spring, communism,...
Causes and consequences of Irish partition
Dolínková, Kateřina ; Štefek, Martin (advisor) ; Soušková, Tereza (referee)
The thesis focuses primarily on the theme of Irish partition. The border itself was placed on the island a little over a hundred years ago and its meaning has also changed over time. We will follow the beginning of the partition from both the historical and political point of view. From the historical context through the roaring 20th century, we will examine the topic up to nowadays when the Irish partition gained new wave of interest in the context of the Brexit referendum. Research will be lead on multiple levels. The essential sources are laws, amending the partition, but also laws which created Northern Ireland and the Irish Free State, later the Republic of Ireland. In modern day we will work with Good Friday Agreement and Brexit Agreement which are both very crucial. Apart from laws we will also take into consideration practical obstacles of partition, that ordinary people must deal with. The last point of focus will be the political progress in both states on the island and the consequences of partition. The aim of this thesis is a complex overview of historical cleavages on the island of Ireland and the changes in Anglo-Irish relations in time. Finally, we evaluate the impact of Brexit on the whole island of Ireland not only in connection with insecurity around the Irish border but also in...
State Security in 1989
Procházka, Libor ; Vilímek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Štefek, Martin (referee)
Thesis wants to show how well the Czechoslovak secret police was informed about the activities, plans and tactics of the political opposition especially in the year 1989. The main sources for the paper are the authentic records of the State Security as regular situation reports, information on the security situation in the country, inside directives of the secret police, but also some documents of the Communist Party leadership. Text shows which were the most important activities of the independent initiatives in the viewpoint of StB and prove that the security forces of the regime seem to might have had (surprisingly) good information on the opposition initiatives. Paper is also aimed on some functional aspects of the State Security, which did not exist in a political vacuum, but was directly subordinated to the Communist Party. Finally, it describes changes in the organizational structures of StB, particularly linked to the reform in 1988. Key words: State security, year 1989, opposition in Czechoslovakia, Charta 77, Movement for Civic Freedom, Obroda, Democratic initiative
