The thesis dealt with the history of the Czech female sport. It also pointed out that the first steps women made into the public life were connected with sport which started to be in vogue in the 19th century. Firstly, I presented the primary features of public life of women living in the Czech lands. It was obvious that there was a difference between social status of women in 19th century and in the present world and female sport needed to develop. The first steps led to philantrophy, where women were introduced to the public activities. Consecutively, I was concerned with founding activities under the supervision of educated and less conservative men who supported women emancipation. There could be included also beginnings of Sokol where the first steps of women towards the physical education. On the turn of the century the society was slightly changing into more liberal and started to identify with the fact of girls engaged in sports. The main focus of the thesis was the Czech university sport which was formed by women in the 20th century as well. I found rich archival sources for female figure skating, especially for Mr. and Mrs. Veselí who became a famous figure skating pair in the 20s of 20th century.

Bláha, Filip ; Štaif, Jiří (advisor) ; Schötz, Susanne (referee) ; Štaif, Jiří (referee)
Closer to the body. The urban female body and its perception in the Sokol and gymnastics movement in Prague and Dresden in the period prior to the First World War. The creation of modern cities and new urban forms brought with it new aspects of the perception of the female body. City boulevards offered women, on the one hand, greater freedom of movement and anonymity, and on the other, modified the discourse on discipline so that the moral integrity of women out on their own in the city was subject to constant scrutiny by passers-by; frequently, mere trivialities could bring a woman's image into question in the eyes of those around her. The image of women thus became strongly sexualised, wavering from that of the prostitute to that of girls on advertising boards. Photography, which developed into a mass medium in the second half of the 19th century, brought with it, too, new aspects in the perception of the female body. Photographic images, including portraits, represent an interesting avenue for discussion of the perception of the female body in historical research. Photographs allow the researcher to determine the qualities ascribed to the female body in the contemporary social discourse and how these were conveyed to viewers. This applies all the more to the gymnastics movement, in which the...

During this era, even the members of lower social classes broadened their economical and cultural potency and thus capacity to absorb the development of new common culture generated by the rapid industrialization and urbanization. Production and reception of emerging popular press is analysed as a marker of the new modern urban experience and its social influences. Global pattern of successful mass daily press was, however, modified for Prague audience, its specific local beliefs, values and desires, distinctively different from those of western urban centre dwellers.

This thesis deals with an analysis of symbolic representation of Czechoslovak historiography to year 1934. Its source is primary the Culture Directory from the year 1934, respectively the kvantification of its informations. This informations or profiles are analyzed through categories of position in hieararchy in historography, nationality, lokalization and specialization. According this categories we can see many different ways of creating symbolic representation in our set of historians. The phenomene of change in time and trends we can see by using category of generation, defined objectively every ten years according the date of birth. Thanks variability of categories we can see the plurality of ways of creating symbolic representation. For exact analysis of symbolic representation we use a concept of "field of representations" where the representations make a really exactly defined units. Their complicated struktures create a symbolic representation of whole czechoslovac historiography. By using a kvantification we can see the facts, which are by other method unachievable.
Genesis of the Belarussian National Identity (1863-1958)
Linitskaya, Natallia ; Štaif, Jiří (advisor) ; Pullmann, Michal (referee)
The study follows the process of the construction of belarussian national identity between the second half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries in terms of community of name, language, territory and historical memories. This subjective foundation of a nation does not blend in the belarussian case with the civic model. Historical memory of Kalinovski's Uprising demonstrates the dubiousness of using a common historical past which itself corresponds with that of Russia and Poland. On the contrary, the allocating of belarussian national identity according to social demands was convinient. Unsuccesful vindication of the historical legacy of "Litva" and the failure of Belarussian to become the language of bureaucracy caused a decoupling of the genealogical bonds from the national identity. The longing of "tutejshi" for social happiness facilitated the appropriation of national identity as essentially a soviet one. Belarussians are becoming Belarussians as toiling people who are emancipated in a national state, deliniated by the colonial map. Keywords: Belarus, national identity, nationalism, national state, belorussification, «tutejshi»
