J.-M. G. Le Clézio: Histoire du pied et autres faintaisies - commented translation, the analysis of the reception of Le Clézio's writing in the context of the French and Czech litterature

The aim of this thesis is to present an annotated literary translation of two short stories (L'arbre Yama a Barsa, ou barsaq) from the collection Histoire du pied et autres fantaisies by French author and Nobel Prize for literature winner J. M. G. Le Clézio. The first part of this thesis contains a translation of the two short stories. The second part, a commentary on the translation, includes information about the choice of the text, the author and his work, main stylistic and thematic features of the two translated texts, a list of main translation problems and strategies to solve them, the choice of the translation method and conception, the reception of Le Clézio's work in Czech literary context and an analysis of a survey among Czech publishers.

The bachelor thesis consists of two main parts. The first part contains a Czech translation of selected chapters from a book by the French journalist Pierre Laffont concerning the colonial history of French Algeria, called L'Algérie des Français. The second part is dedicated to an analysis of the source text, partly based on Christiane Nord's model, as well as to the presentation of the translation method, the typology of translation problems and their concrete solutions.

Reception and Czech translations Story of O, a novel by Pauline Réage

1 Abstract The thesis describes the reception and Czech translations of Story of O by Pauline Réage, an erotic novel which was considered scandalous in its time (1954) and became part of the canon of French contemporary prose. In the first part, the thesis characterizes the structure and style of Story of O. It then presents the specific context of its first publication and places the novel in the evolution of French literature. In this part, the thesis also attempts to describe the reception context in the fifties and compares the situation with how the novel is perceived by the current literary scene and cultural domain in general. In this part of the reception analysis, the thesis relies on critical reviews in French periodicals and reactions on the internet. It also mentions the perspective of literary theoreticians on similarly themed works. In the second part, the thesis introduces two Czech translations and attempts to recreate the reasons which led to the publication of the first translation Příběh O.: krásná z Roissy, Tabu, 1991 by Lucie Erbenová and the second translation Příběh O; Návrat do Roissy, Host, 2005 by Matěj Turek. Furthermore, it presents the reasons for the republication in Host in 2013. The analysis of the current reception in the target culture preceeds the focal part of this thesis...

Use of Vulgarisms in Journalism Texts

The present master's thesis tackles the position of vulgarisms within the system of language as used in texts published in Czech and French weekly opinion magazines. The thesis takes a theoretic and empiric approach, the first part dealing with the definition of the term of vulgarism in Czech and French stylistics and the delimitation of its role in the style of journalistic texts. The second part of the thesis describes the practical approach of Czech and French weeklies to vulgarisms in their texts based on a survey among editing staff of the major publishing houses both in France and in the Czech Republic. The outcomes of the survey were compared to the analysis results conveyed on a corpus built out of texts published in Le Point and Respekt weeklies. Based on the contrastive analysis of vulgarisms used in Czech and French language corpus, following the critical criteria as outlined in the first part of the thesis, several recommendations are made about French-Czech translations of vulgarisms in journalistic texts. Islamism in Czech ad French Literature. The issue of translation and reception of French language novels with the theme of Islamism in Czech

The main topic of the master's thesis is the phenomenon of Islamism in the Francophone Maghrebian literature. It focuses on the translation of novels from the region of Maghreb into the Czech language and on the reception of this type of literature in the Czech and French culture and society. The thesis is divided into two parts: theoretical and practical one. The main aim of the theoretical part is to be interdisciplinary; it explains the main concepts of the political science such as the concept of a nation or of immigration policies. Only a good understanding of these policies can lead to the full comprehension of Islamism in Western countries. Moreover, this part presents the main topics of translation studies, i.e. postcolonial studies, after the cultural turn and the main characteristics of the Maghrebian literature. The second part of the thesis deals with the reception of novels about Islamism in France and in the Czech Republic and analyses the Czech translation of a novel written by Boualem Sansal. Stylization of Spoken Language in Literature as a Translation Problem (French - Czech)

The present thesis examines the stylization of spoken language in literature from the translation point of view, namely in translation from French into Czech. As a prerequisite for dealing with the use of spoken language in translation, the use of spoken language in contemporary Czech literature is examined. Ten works of contemporary Czech literature are analysed via corpus linguistics methods, using the corpora of written language of the Czech National Corpus, with the view of describing the principal phonological, morphological, lexical and syntactic procedures used in Czech literary texts to evoke spoken language. In the second part of the thesis, six works of French literature containing features of spoken language are analysed, together with their translations into Czech. The paper also summarises the main features of spoken Czech and spoken French.

Vulgarisms in literary translation from French into Czech

This thesis deals with the question of how vulgarisms are translated in the context of a literary text. First we sum up the theories of expressivity used in both common and literary communication. We point out the main typological differences between Czech and French as well as the key cultural differences in the perception of expressivity. We define the term 'vulgarism' and try to outline the use of substandard language in both Czech and French literature. In the following chapter Michel Houellebecq, his work and the fundamental traits of his writing style are presented. We also look at the reception of the Czech translation of Houellebecq's novel Les Particules élémentaires. Then we analyse the translation, focusing on the transfer of vulgarisms in order to trace and evaluate the translation method used to convey the vulgar elements of the original work.
