French left-wing populism and three presidential attempts of Jean-Luc Mélenchon
Urbanová, Anna ; Mejstřík, Martin (advisor) ; Šindelář, Jakub (referee)
The thesis deals with the elements of left-wing populism in Jean-Luc Mélenchon's candidacy for the French president. In the empirical part, it uses critical discursive analysis to examine the programmes for the 2012, 2017 and 2022 elections, paying attention also to the presentation of the presidential candidate and his public statements. The aim of the thesis is to find out how Mélenchon's discourse of left-wing populism has evolved and whether he has exploited or handled moments of social crisis in his campaigns. The research also focuses on the concept of mainstreaming populists, according to which they depart from their original ideals to make their rhetoric more acceptable to a wider range of voters, doing so in an attempt to achieve increased electoral results.

Representation of female characters in videogames inspired by the Victorian era on the example of Dishonored and Dishonored 2
Smoliankina, Sofia ; Šindelář, Jakub (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
In my thesis, I study the representation of female characters in videogames inspired by the Victorian era. Videogames can be considered a form of audiovisual media wherein it is possible to depict both the historical period and the perspectives of contemporary society on it. For the analysis, I use literary sources on the subjects of neo-Victorian era, the development of gaming community, as well as the position of women in it. Using this theory and relevant context, I analyse the female characters in Dishonored (2012) and Dishonored 2 (2016). I focus on the role that the main and secondary female characters have played in the storyline, how their position has changed within the franchise. The analysis is carried out in the context of the changes in the modern gaming community, it also analyses how conflicts within it (i.e. the "GamerGate" incident) could contribute to the changes in the video games themselves. The purpose of this thesis is to show how norms and values at the time when the historical media representation was created have an impact on the portrayal of the past. Using the concept of homosocial relationships, which characterizes the "closed male world" of the Victorian era, I investigate how the role in the storyline and the number of female characters has changed in Dishonored 2...
Rap as a form of political protest: the case of Muslim rappers in France
Babková, Markéta ; Bauer, Paul (advisor) ; Šindelář, Jakub (referee)
The thesis deals with the issue of the interconnection between the spheres of politics and religion in contemporary secular France. The case of three Muslim performers of the rap conscient music genre was chosen for research in this area. The thesis first focuses on the more general question of the circumstances under which politics and religion are linked in contemporary secular France. It soon becomes clear that music plays a key role in this interconnection. Furthermore, the thesis seeks to establish whether accusations of proselytism and Islamic fundamentalism against selected rappers by right-wing and radical-right parties are justified. It attempts to achieve this finding by using the method of qualitative content analysis of the motifs that appear in the lyrics of the songs, focusing on the motif of Islam. Following this analysis, and supporting it with research into deeper context, the thesis concludes that although the motif of Islam is present in the song lyrics, it is only in the form of fighting Islamophobia. Rather, the fight against discrimination in general plays a major role in the work of the selected rappers. The controversy was therefore most often caused by a misinterpretation of these lyrics.

A part of the thesis is also devoted to the development of the video game industry in the contemporary Czech Republic and its possible specifics, such as the creation of anti-regime text adventure games or a specific approach to copyright.
