Prayer as a literary genre and its realization in contemporary Czech poetry
Sixta, Tomáš ; Hrdlička, Josef (advisor) ; Šidák, Pavel (referee)
The thesis Prayer as a literary genre and its realization in contemporary Czech poetry deals with the question of prayer as a literary genre in poetry and then whether and how this genre is realized in contemporary Czech lyric poetry. This leads to two main focuses of this thesis. The first is theoretical research in the field of literary genres and the second is its application to specific poems. The first part deals primarily with various definitions of prayer as a literary genre in Czech and foreign literature. On the basis of their critical reflection, the thesis then goes on to discuss several key points in the study of prayer in literature, in order to present an attempt to define prayer as a literary genre itself, which divides it into a scale of four points, two of which are particularly relevant to literary scholarship (prayer in the narrower sense based on formal relatedness to the religious pattern; prayer in a broader sense based on addressing a sacred entity) and two more peripheral (prayer as a primarily religious act and a genre of church literature; a theological conception that sees all poetry as prayer). The second part of the thesis deals with specific examples of poems-prayers in collections of Czech lyric poetry published after 2010. First, three more extensive interpretations...
Literature of architextual tension
Šidák, Pavel ; Wiendl, Jan (advisor) ; Bílek, Petr (referee) ; Vojvodík, Josef (referee)
The dissertation deals with the literature influenced by religious experience. We do not attempt an overall solution of the issue of the relationship between aesthetics and theology; our goal is to describe the so-called "Catholic" literature as one of the possible models of "religious" literature. An ideal example of this model and the material basis of the thesis is Jan Čep's book Zeměžluč (Centaury, 1931). The study is divided into three parts: the first one summarizes the existing discussion of the problem in general (chapter 1), in theology and literary criticism (chapters 2 and 4), and it examines the usability of the term "ideology" (chapter 3). The second part develops our theoretical basis, the theory of intertextuality and interdiscursivity (chapter 6). The subject of this study is not a literary-historical era nor a genre in the traditional sense. We see it as a coalescence of two textual (semiotic) areas. The theory of interdiscursivity allows us to follow the textualization of religion: the mechanism through which real Catholicism as a religious fact turns into a system of signs, i.e. into a text, which is subject to the general laws and possibilities of a text description (Lotman, Piatigorski) (chapter 7). We regard the resulting area of a literary structure as a homogenous phenomenon of...
.The "own" and "foreign" spaces in the fairy tales of Karel Jaromír Erben, Božena Němcová, the Grimm brothers and Ludwig Bechstein
Ledinská, Šárka ; Bílek, Petr (advisor) ; Kubíček, Tomáš (referee) ; Šidák, Pavel (referee)
This dissertation has two main aims. The first is to describe or specify the poetics of "own" and "foreign" space in literary work in general and in the fairy tales of K. J. Erben, the Grimm brothers, B. Němcová or L. Bechstein; the second is to analyse and compare the poetics in three spatial pairs the "own" and "foreign" spaces in relation to the main character of the above-mentioned fairy tales representing, namely in the spaces of home and journey, the living and the dead or welfare and poverty. The first part of the thesis is mostly theoretical and is primarily focused on the first set goal, i. e. the description and specification of the poetics of "own" and "foreign" spaces as well as on related phenomena, such as the definition of concepts "space", "own", "foreign", "own and foreign space", "place", "character", "subject of own and foreign space", analysis of the character's relationships to space, evolution of humans relationship to space and their perspective on it in history and literature with a special focus on spatial turn etc. The second, predominantly analytical-comparative part of the thesis, connected mainly with the second set goal of the dissertation, focuses with the help of secondary literature in the field of humanities and specifically selected fairy-tale aspects on the...
he Appropriation of Folk rhetoric and the Genre of the (Folk) Fairytale of the 19th century
Šidák, Pavel
The essay describes the appropriation of the folk fairytale in Czech artistic literature. The related phenomena and problems are also discussed. In the first half of the 19th century, when the fairytale was appropriated as a genre, this was mainly about finding a functional spot for the fairytale and its genre form. In the second half of the century, it was about the term “modus”, which the fairytale used to influence so-called high literature and its narrative strategy.
Constructed languages in literature
Jelínek, Jiří ; Hrdlička, Josef (advisor) ; Tereza Dědinová, Tereza (referee) ; Šidák, Pavel (referee)
The PhD thesis "Constructed Languages in Literature" focuses on the phenomenon of consciously designed or drafted languages and their usage in literary texts. The first chapter of the thesis offers reflections on the delimitation of constructed languages, especially from the perspective of the mostly illusory opposition of natural and constructed. It also puts forth the problems of glossolalia and encryption or encoding of a text in a natural language, while suggesting these two ways to create a new utterance should be perceived as possible starting points for language creativity, rather than a completely different phenomenon. The subsequent chapters then turn to individual cases and introduce extensive groups of constructed and virtual languages - animal languages, utopian and dystopian languages, sacred and divine languages and constructed and virtual languages in poetry. In those chapters examples of both elaborated and drafted languages appear, so that the imagination characteristic of each group comes out.
The Road to a Genre. The Early History of Detective Fiction in Czech Literary Culture (Until 1928)
Řadová Holanová, Markéta ; Janáček, Pavel (advisor) ; Wutsdorff, Irina (referee) ; Šidák, Pavel (referee)
The Road to a Genre The Early History of Detective Fiction in Czech Literary Culture (Until 1928) (abstract) This dissertation focuses on the early history of detective fiction in Czech literature and literary culture. It challenges the deeply rooted conception of the history of Czech mystery fiction that has prevailed in the Czech literary studies, wherein Emil Vachek's Tajemství obrazárny (The Mystery of a Picture Gallery), published in the late 1920s, is considered the first national variant of detective fiction. Our aim was not to radically rewrite the history of this model, but rather to put it in a historical context - starting from the second half of the nineteenth century, to which only marginal attention has been given so far. At the same time, this dissertation tries to demonstrate the close connection between the idea of the genre's origin in the environment of national literature, and the perception and definition of the genre category. As for its theoretical foundations, this dissertation draws on recent Anglo-American works revising older conceptions of the history of detective fiction that were usually based on specific normative concepts of detective fiction. As the recent relevant sources suggest, teleological constructions of the history of a genre - characteristic of the earlier research...
The Water Spirit, the 'Prince of Death and Darkness'
Šidák, Pavel
The study shows the relationship between the demonic world and the categories 'darkness' and 'light'. As a representative of the demonic world the water spirit has been chosen, a figure that is firmly rooted in the Czech mythological system and is in many respects a specific one. The intuitive connection between the demonic world and the area of 'darkness' is demonstrated, but at the same time this connection is exposed as a retrospective interpretation of the world of Christian thought and is qualified by the ability of demonic figures, as portrayed in art, to participate in both the 'dark' and the 'light' chronotope. The true “darkness” of this figure, thanks to which the water spirit and the demonic world in general are still attractive themes for art today, is to be seen in the fact that it is not human, not recognisable, and cannot be grasped.
