The early years of Queen Victoria's reign (1837-1841)

The bachelor's thesis aims to analyze the early years of Queen Victoria's reign, between 1837 and 1841. The events that accompanied her birth, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and primarily her accession to the throne, coronation, reign of the queen during the reign of Lord Melbourne and then Sir Robert Peel. The work ends with a chapter on choosing a suitable match for marriage, the subsequent marriage of Queen Victoria to Prince Albert and the birth of the first-born daughter. Austria, Muhammad Ali and the Middle East crisis 1839-1841

Po roce 1815 byla vojenská expanze habsburské říše na Balkánském poloostrově definitivně nahrazena politickou spoluprací s Konstantinopolí a ekonomickou expanzí rakouských firem v Orientu. Zde byl v této době nesporně nejvýznamnějším obchodním partnerem Egypt, kde po konsolidaci vnitřních poměrů došlo k zásadním hospodářským a administrativním reformám a na poměry Blízkého východu k nevídané 5 průmyslové revoluci. Iniciátorem těchto změn byl mimořádně schopný místodržící této provincie Muhammad Alí. Právě vztah rakouského kancléře Klemense Václava Lothara knížete Metternicha k jeho osobě a zároveň k Osmanské říši v letech 1839-1841 je ústředním tématem této diplomové práce. V tomto období byl poklidný vývoj na Blízkém východě a v Evropě narušen válkou mezi sultánem a Muhammadem Alím. V jednu chvíli se dokonce zdálo, že úspěchy egyptského vládce zničí celistvost říše a zároveň mír mezi velmocemi. Tato krize se tak stala jednou z nejvýznamnějších událostí doby předbřeznové. Mým záměrem je v první řadě podat ucelený obraz rakouské politiky v jejím průběhu a vysvětlit Metternichovy názory na jednotlivé události odehrávající se jak v Turecku, tak i v Evropě. Rovněž osobnost Muhammada Alího nemá a nemůže zůstat v kontextu této problematiky pouze okrajovou záležitostí a je nezbytné se jí věnovat podrobněji, neboť...

Web-camera based interactive user input

The goal of this thesis is to design and implement an interactive user input device for a PC, consisting of a web-camera scanning the gestures of the user's hand. The user will be wearing a special glove fixed with colored LED diodes to aid the image analysis process. Thesis concentrates on possible approaches to real-time image processing and interactive recognition of gestures. The ultimate goal is to substitute the basic functionality of the "computer mouse".

Relations between Brandenburg and Sweden during years 1660 - 1701

- The thesis is focused on relations between Sweden and Brandenburg in the years 1660 - 1701. Although Sweden is considered as an empire practically all over the 17th century, a new, important power rises in its neighbourhood, namely Brandenburg-Prussia, and this rise is finished by the Royal coronation of Fredrick I in 1701. Main part of the thesis is dedicated to the political and military relations, less to the cultural relations. Even other countries, following and protecting their interests in the Baltic region, are taken into account, especially Denmark and France. The aim of the thesis is to analyse relations between Sweden and Brandenburg and to try to find an answer on the question, if Sweden's focus on its internal problems and reforms contributed to the rise of Prussia or if there is no direct connection between these two tendencies. Jakub Mazanec Water Projects on the Nile in the 19th Century and Their Influence in British-French Relations At the beginning of the 19th century, the era of building of the first modern hydraulic projects on the Nile in Egypt was launched. During the first half of the 19th century, France had a significat influence on Egypt, which was also reflected in hydraulic projects on the Nile. On the contraty, since the British ocuppation of Egypt in 1882 until the end of the century, the influence of London dominated. The need of water and the construction of major projects shaped the policies of France and Great Britain towards Nile basin. The aim of this thesis is to prove or refute the hypothesis, that hydraulic projects realized on the Nile during the 19th century represented a significant issue of friction between France and Great Britain. And at the same time this thesis tries to prove a change in the perception of water from the side of Egyptian authorities.

Austria and the Eastern question 1829-1841

Relying on thorough examination of relevant documents housed in the archives in Vienna, Paris, London, Berlin and Munich, this thesis analyzes the attitude of one of the most important personalities of the 19th century, Austrian Chancellor Metternich, towards the Ottoman Empire and his behaviour in the complicated evolution of the Eastern Question from 1829 to 1841, in other words from the signature of the Treaty of Adrianople to the conclusion of the second London Treaty regarding the Straits. Attention is paid particularly to the final phase of the Greeks' struggle for independence and the relating Russian-Ottoman war, the French expedition to Algeria, the two Ottoman-Egyptian crises, the Rhine crisis caused by the complications in the Levant, the Russian-British rivalry in the East and the difficult situation of the Christians in Syria in the spring of 1841. A further reason for writing this thesis is to point out some of Metternich's hitherto unknown characteristics and diplomatic procedures transpiring from his Near Eastern policy.
