The history of the gerund in English and its structural precursors from a typological viewpoint
Matoušková, Barbora ; Čermák, Jan (advisor) ; Dušková, Libuše (referee)
The following thesis attempts attempts to map the structural precursors of the gerund in the framework of language typology. Its main goal is to verify the assumption that the appearance and increasing use and functional load of the gerund is connected to the development of English as a language type.
Towards an Evidence-based Approach to Reconstructing ēode
Martin, Robert ; Čermák, Jan (advisor) ; Bičovský, Jan (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to review the generally accepted analysis of the origins of the Old English ēode, the suppletive preterite of the verb gān "to go", and its relation to iddja, its Gothic equivalent. For a central and also unifying approach, the paper turns to Warren Cowgill's article (1960) as well as a section in Seebold's etymological dictionary Vergleichendes und etymologisches Wörterbuch der germanischen starken Verben (1960). The second chapter includes a summary of the behaviour of both verb's paradigms in both languages, in addition to relevant information about the languages themselves. It then discusses the etymologies of the source verbs, requisite morphological theory, and several key concepts of Indo-European linguistics. The second chapter concludes with a summary of Cowgill's and Seebold's reconstructions themselves, which are, in the third chapter, followed by a criticism of both approaches, with regards to their less explicitly stated assumptions especially. The chapter addresses instances where the notion of formal inadequacy is applied, then turns to the morphological phenomenon of hypercharacterization, and finally takes stock of the impact of the asymmetry in the approaches taken to both cognates. In the fourth chapter, a survey of the development in the paradigms of...
Development of the Czech secondary preposition kvůli from a constructional perspective
Čermák, Jan ; Friedová, Mirjam (advisor) ; Králová Zíková, Magdalena (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to map the historical development of the modern Czech secondary preposition kvůli, which denotes causality and is complemented by a dative NP in standard language and by a genitive case in certain dialects of North Moravia. Its development can be traced back to the Old Czech benefactive prepositional phrase (PP) k vóli/k vuoli (literally 'to/toward will'), which was used as an adverbial of reason or goal of the event denoted by the predicate, with respective meanings 'according to sb's will', or 'to sb's satisfaction'. The beneficiary was either expressed by common possessive means inside the PP (e.g., by a genitive noun phrase (NP) or a possessive pronoun), or by an external dative NP, which was syntactically independent of the PP and functioned as a verbal argument. Adopting the approach of Construction Grammar (Fillmore, 1988, 1989; Fried & Östmann, 2004) and drawing on findings from grammaticalization research, historical material spanning the Old Czech, Middle Czech and Modern Czech period is analysed, paying attention to individual contextual features that enabled the changes leading to the modern prepositional use. Through a series of contextually conditioned and interdependent semantic, syntactic, morphosyntactic, and phonological shifts, the expression gradually...
The investment portfolio and its creation
Čermák, Jan ; Luňáček, Jiří (referee) ; Dohnal, Mirko (advisor)
The subject of the diploma thesis is the proposal of a sector-diversified investment portfolio of American value stocks for the use of an ETF fund. The thesis consists of three parts. In the first part, the necessary theoretical background is explained, on the basis of which the criteria for the selection of stock titles are determined. In the following part the fundamental analysis of selected stock titles is presented. The conclusion of the work is the proposal of a stock portfolio based on an investment recommendation and determination of the percentage representation of individual stock titles.
Bellman's Lost in a Forest Problem and Its Analysis
Haviger, Vojtěch ; Hoderová, Jana (referee) ; Čermák, Jan (advisor)
This thesis is focused on the Bellman’s problem of searching for the shortest escape path from the planar, closed and convex set with a nonempty interior. After introduction of some notions needed to understand and solve the problem, the thesis deals with discusions of the shortest escape paths for considered shapes of the given set (circular disc, circular sector, infinite strip, rectangle, regular polygon, triangle, half-plane, circle). Finally, the obtained results are summarized, and extended by some open problems.
Distribution of grease in rolling bearing
Hynek, Jakub ; Čermák, Jan (referee) ; Šperka, Petr (advisor)
The work deals with the issue of grease distribution in a rolling bearing. Grease lubricated ball bearing in this way often experience the problem of starvation, when the contact area is not sufficiently supplied with lubricant, which leads to bearing failure. In general, this is a very complex and comprehensive topic. Specifically, the description of the effect of selected parameters on the distribution of grease in the rolling bearing was solved. The evaluation took place on the contact surfaces of the inner and outer ring and bearing balls. The average film thickness in selected areas at the point of contact and in front of it were evaluated. The method for observation was fluorescence microscopy. The effects of the percentage filling of the bearing with grease, the speed, the material and the design of the cage on the distribution and distribution of the grease on the bearing surfaces are described in the thesis. The result is information about the distribution of the grease on the raceways and balls of the bearing and their immediate surroundings. It was shown that the new experimental approach used makes it possible to evaluate the amount of grease available for bearing lubrication in a real configuration.
Influence of the grease wear to its lubrication properties
Prokop, Adam ; Čermák, Jan (referee) ; Košťál, David (advisor)
Approximately 80% of all rolling bearings are lubricated with grease. Up to 1/3 of all bearing failures are caused by lubrication problems, including inappropriate replacement intervals for degraded grease. The aim of this thesis is to experimentally determine the dependence between the degree of degradation of plastic lubricant, the provided thickness of the lubricating film, and the resulting friction coefficient. Samples of plastic lubricant were subjected to thermal-oxidative degradation and mechanical degradation in a custom-built rotary grease worker. The thicknesses of the lubricating film were then measured as a function of circumferential velocity and traction curves. The lubricating abilities of fresh samples were compared with degraded samples, and possible explanations for the different behaviours were outlined. The results of this thesis may contribute to a better understanding of the influence of degradation on the lubricating abilities of greases and could help to improve predictive models for estimating the expected durability of lubricants.
Mathematical methods in some ranking models
Pažourek, Lubomír ; Kureš, Miroslav (referee) ; Čermák, Jan (advisor)
The bachelor thesis deals with the mathematical essence of some ranking methods. Their unifying element is the so-called Perron-Frobenius theorem for non-negative and irreducible matrices, which formulates the conditions for the existence of a positive eigenvalue and a positive eigenvector of the given matrix. The goal of the thesis consists in providing an overview of the necessary theoretical results, explaining their application within some ranking methods and performing simulations during the evaluation of some competitions.
Ferrocene acylphosphines
Vosáhlo, Petr ; Štěpnička, Petr (advisor) ; Čermák, Jan (referee) ; Horáček, Michal (referee)
6 Abstract The Thesis is aimed at the synthesis of novel ferrocene-based acylphosphines of the type FcC(O)PR2 and R1 2PfcC(O)PR2 2 (Fc = ferrocenyl, fc = 1,1'-ferrocendiyl), evaluation of their electron-donating capabilities and steric demands. The impact of these features was scrutinized by further coordination and catalytical studies. First, a series of monodentate acylphosphine ligands FcC(O)PR2 was synthesized (PR2 = diphenylphosphino [PPh2], dicyclohexylphosphino [PCy2], di(1-adamantyl)phosphino [PAd2] a 1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-2,4,6-trioxa-8- phosphaadamantyl [PCg]), which underwent oxidation by elemental selenium to give corresponding phosphine selenides used to probe their electron-donating capabilities via measuring 1 JPSe coupling constant. Then, chlorogold complexes were prepared from these ligands to evaluate their catalytic activity in gold-catalysed hydration of alkynes and cyclization of N-propargylbenzamide. Second, the model compound FcC(O)PPh2 was extensively studied as a ligand in palladium(II) complexes. The ligand was smoothly ortho-metallated by Na2[PdCl4] to form chloro-bridged palladium(II) dimer, which reacted with P-, N- and C-donors under cleavage to give monopalladium complexes. One of these complexes, containing trimethylphosphine auxiliary ligand, was alkylated with organometallic...
Mimoprodukční využití usedlosti Kvítkův Dvůr v Českém Krumlově
ČERMÁK, Jan
The bachelor's thesis deals with non-agricultural production of the homestead Kvítkův Dvůr in Český Krumlov. The area of the Kvítkův Dvůr homestead was originally a part of the Český Krumlov chateau and supplied the chateau and its surroundings with agricultural products. It has always been an important landscape element around Český Krumlov. It is currently in a neglected state and there is a vision for the future of the restoration of the homestead with its own specific production. The aim of this work is to evaluate the potential of the area of the historic homestead Kvítkův Dvůr in Český Krumlov in terms of the basic dimensions of the principle of sustainability. To evaluate the potential, an extensive data collection was performed, on the basis of which an opportunity study was performed using SWOT and SMART analysis tools. The results show specific possibilities of non-production use, which are discussed in the work from the position of the author. The results also show there are several fundamental problems in the project that will not be so easy to solve. It is mainly a matter of changing and stabilizing property relations between the complex and its surroundings, as well as great financial demands and the right choice of financing. Given the above results, the option of buying the monument and financing its reconstruction and further development by the state with the help of subsidy and foundation forms of financing seems to be one of the good solutions.
