Monetary Policy, Inflation and Dollarization in the Economies of Central Asia
Isakova, Asel ; Kočenda, Evžen (advisor) ; Čihák, Martin (referee) ; Wouters, Rafael (referee)
The present dissertation consists of three studies on the issues of inflation, monetary policy effects and dollarization in three economies in Central Asia-Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan. These economies have undergone a deep transformation from central planning to market economies. The profound economic transformation which took place after these countries became independent, combined with liberalization of prices and trade, resulted in hyperinflation, general economic instability, and large fiscal and external imbalances. Central banks in the region had managed to combine the policies and tools to take control of inflation in the late 1990s. This was the period when positive economic growth was observed in the region. A negative shock for these countries was caused by the Russian crisis in 1998, though the consequences of this financial turmoil were softened by the measures of the regional central banks concerning the flexibility of the exchange rates. Since 2000, these economies have been characterized by single-digit inflation rates, except Tajikistan, and high positive economic growth. The monetary policy framework has evolved over the transition period. Macroeconomic stabilization has brought important developments in the financial systems of the countries while at the same time a need...
Essays on Interest Rates and Credit Risk
Vojtek, Martin ; Kočenda, Evžen (advisor) ; Palda, Filip (referee) ; Čihák, Martin (referee)
This dissertation addresses inefficiencies and problems in the financial markets of post-transition countries, which denies the use of standard estimation techniques. It focuses on interest rate markets and empirically analyzes the situation in the countries that joined the EU in May 2004. These countries underwent significant changes over the last two decades and markets in these countries are often not stable and not developed. In my dissertation I am conducting research in the areas where the empirical results are very scarce. A deeper understanding of the specifics in the markets of post-transition countries can be very helpful for example in designing policy measures touching these markets.
Essays on the Microeconomics of Banking
Dvořák, Pavel ; Hanousek, Jan (advisor) ; Čihák, Martin (referee) ; Kraft, Evan (referee)
Essays on the Microeconomics of Banking - Dissertation Abstract The thesis consists of four chapters and is primarily a contribution to the literature on the microeconomics of banking. The first chapter focuses on alternative explanations of the apparent vast international differences in retail bank fees between countries on different levels of economic development. Apart from the usual form of asymmetric information between the bank and its borrowers (i.e. the assumption that the bank cannot observe the borrower's type), the additional assumption is that the borrowers themselves can have false perceptions about their quality. It is shown that the higher is the degree of the borrower's misperceptions about their skills the higher fees should be expected. In an alternative setup it is shown that comparable results can be received when banks possess imperfect testing technology (this assumption replaces the assumption about the borrower's false perceptions). Moreover, simulations using both setups also imply that under realistic conditions increasing wealth inequality in a country (measured by a Gini index) leads to higher fees. The second chapter focuses on the effects of inter-bank information sharing on the degree of competition in the banking industry. Information sharing is shown to be an effective...

Narrative cracks and their compensation
Hoffmann Polenský, Tomáš ; DOLENSKÝ, Martin (advisor) ; ČIHÁK, Martin (referee)
Narrative gaps are dramaturgical problems which disturb the viewers? perception of the storyline and the fictional world of a film. The text analyses specific narrative gaps on the example of the most popular Czech films produced between 2000?2010. This work explores the question of the popularity of these films despite their narrative problems. In searching for the answer it tries to see the problem from the perspective of the audience as well as the filmmakers. From the perspective of cognitive film theories, it describes the auto-compensation processes applied by the viewers. It also describes the mechanisms of attraction which are used by filmmakers to cover up the narrative gaps.
Rustic and acoustic. Editor's work on an audiovisual field
Pospíšil, Matěj ; ČIHÁK, Martin (advisor) ; BROTHÁNEK, Adam (referee)
This paper focuses on sound as an essential structural element in the creation of an audiovisual work in the editing room. It describes the basic physical, physiological and psychological effects of sound waves on the human being-editor (and subsequently on the viewer). It further examines the relationship between sound and image based on a few key concepts developed by theoretician Michel Chion. Examples of a precise and meaningful work with sound are drawn from the analysis of various excerpts of Miroslav Janek's film Chačipe, edited by Tonička Janková.
