Works by "Netherlandish" masters od the 17th century from the collection of Count Humprecht Jan Černín

The first chapter of this work deals with the life of Count Humprecht Jan Černín, who was a leading Bohemian baroque art collector. The next chapter describes the formation of the Czernin picture gallery during the life of Humprecht Jan Černín, its development under his successors until it ceased to exist at the end of the 18th century, and a subsequent attempt to restore it. In the third chapter we come to the main theme - the collection of Netherlandish masters. I summarize the extant sources for this part of the collection and I describe its formation. I focus on the masters and themes which are represented in this collection and I examine the role played by Humprecht Jan Černín in their selection. The last chapter describes three paintings by Netherlandish masters from the collection of Humprecht Jan Černín, which have been preserved in Bohemia. I describe the literature relating to these works, their provenance, and also the painter, if we know who it was. I place the main emphasis on the themes of these paintings.

Decoration of the Hall of Battles in the monastery El Escorial

The bachelor thesis focuses on the decoration of the Hall of battles in the Spanish monastery El Escorial, which was built in 1563-1584 by the Spanish king Philip II. The first part is devoted to the description of the monastery and its individual parts, The second chapter will be devoted to the Italian artists from Genoa who were commissioned to decorate the Hall of Battles (Nicola Granello, Orazio Cambiaso, Fabrizio Castello and Lazzaro Tavarone). The main part of this thesis will be a chapter devoted to the description of the paintings in the gallery of battles that depict the four victorious battles of Spain and a description of the vault with grotesque decoration.

"Homo deformis". The fascination by appearance of deformed human body in the Lands of the Bohemian Crown between 1526 and 1620

During the 16th century a new phenomenon occurred, that the physically disabled people were presented as curiosities or miracles because of their visage. Some cases were realy incredible therefore their appearances gave an impulse for creating an artwork. The images were popular between all social levels, were collected by townspeople, scientists, nobles and kings. The dissertation thesis "Homo deformis". The fascination by appearance of deformed human body in the Lands of the Bohemian Crown between 1526 and 1620 aims to explore how the phenomenon of human curiosities was reflected in early modern visual art in the Czech lands. This dissertation thesis bases on individual examples of human monstrosity in various art forms such as portraits, allegories, scientific illustrations and pamphlets. It exams images of abnormal disabled people between 1526-1620 and focuses on their symbolic meaning, aesthetic interpretation. It summarizes the knowledge about perceptions of depicted abnormal persons in 16th century. It also shows the Early modern society reactions about "homo deformis", their everydayness and social status. This thesis studies reasons why the disabled body was a kind an inspiration for artists. MARTIN ZLATOHLÁVEK, PHD. Dissertation entitled Monastic rules and muses. The capuchin friars in the service of the art in early Baroque Bohemia set out for the purpose of research to the neglected theme of the Capuchin brothers - painters on the border between Mannerism and the Baroque era. This phenomenon in painting, which is not only characteristic for the order of the Capuchins, but also of other ecclesiastical orders, has never been more comprehensive. The Capuchin brother Paolo Piazza came to the Czech lands with first capuchin brothers; in his paintings he is inspired of the Venetian school of the 16th century. He was a versatile painter, he created not only painting on canvases, but also made wall paintings and his painting manuscript was not uniformly defined. Paolo Piazza worked in the capuchin monasteries in Prague and Brno during the reign of Rudolph II, for the emperor himself he created several artworks. Piazza's work has also been preserved in the engravings of the Sadeler family. On the Iconography of the Cassone Panels from the National Gallery in Prague

At the time when the Middle ages were almost, but not quite, gone and depictions of pagan gods in "high" art were still scarce, relatively common objects were covered with ancient stories and classical myths. On Florentine marriage chests of the Quattrocento reappeared some scenes that were neglected and forgotten for centuries. These chests, so called cassoni, played an important role in the renewal of secular painting in the Renaissance. This research looks at two cassone panels from the National Gallery in Prague, The Judgment of Paris and The Rape of Helen. It is focused on their iconography and its sources. Special attention is paid to the female figure with wings on her head that appears in The Judgment of Paris. She is identified as Venus, who is often depicted with wings in Florentine art of the 15th century. Possible literary sources are also considered.

Depictions of the Last Judgment Scene in the Czech Renaissance and Mannerism of the 15th and the 16th Centurie. The study submitted to fulfill the Bachelor Degree requirement, "Depictions of the Last Judgment Scene in the Czech Renaissance and Mannerism of the 15th and the 16th Centuries," analyzes several preserved frescoes with the theme of the Last Judgment and identifies their compositional and iconographic sources. The main ones are Johanes Sadeler's I. copper engravings of the Last Judgment (1550-1600). The graphic oeuvre of this Flemish artist, as the study demonstrates in a number of examples, exerted a considerable influence not only on his contemporaries but also on the art of later periods. Paolo Fiammingo in Venice

Thesis on subject of Paolo Fiammingo in Venice focuses on a personality of a Netherlandish painter, who lived in Venice the most important part of his productive life. Text of the thesis resumes knowledge on his origin, regarding existing literature it suggest, that there is not enough documentation of his staying or apprenticeship until he came to Venice. In this regards, it also concludes, that he was not famous until he took part in Tintoretto's workshop in Veneto. Thesis researches possible Tosca and Roma mannerism influences of his later works by an analysis his later work and in the light of existing literature. Main part of the thesis concerns on Paolo's sojourn in Venice, which started probably in Tintoretto's workshop. Within workshop daily praxis, he was contributing in finishing some specific commissions of his Master with his apprentice colleagues. Thesis brings some witnesses concerning workshop life and also way the completed work took from the workshop to commissioner. The other part of this work turns awareness to his independent production in Venice and its close connection to his transalpine commissions. Scenic Designs of High Baroque in the National Collections of the Czech Republic The thesis deals with the Baroque scenic designs which are situated in public collections of the Czech Republic. These are mainly the works by Josef Hager and Josef Redlmayer, whose production was inspired by the Italian baroque scene designer Giuseppe Galli Bibiena. The aim of the thesis is to describe inspirational sources which influenced the artists and to comprehensively classify their production within the European context of the Baroque period. The diploma work also explains the history of Baroque theatres in Bohemia as well as in the whole Europe. It shows their connection with the pompous cellebrations so popular in Baroque period. The thesis also informs about the progress of Italian scenography and scenic designs with the explaination of stage decorations. The thesis is divided into five general chapters which show the local and time consequences. The first part brings the general introduction into the baroque theatre and baroque theatrality. It explains the beginning, genres and technical issues of the baroque theatre. This information is extended further during the thesis.
