Parental behavior and recognition of juveniles in geckos of genus Teratoscincus

4 ANNOTATION The diploma thesis deals with parental behavior and recognition of youngs by two kinds of desert geckos of genus Teratoscincus, specifically T. scincus and T. keyserlingii. The geckos inhabit a very extreme environment where it is not easy to survive, especially for the small hatchlings. Therefore, it is probable that small hatchlings live together with their parents in their territory for some time. If the parents tolerated them inside their territory, they would provide them with an indirect form of parental care. In the first part of the thesis the hypothesis that adults tolerate to the presence of juvenile conspecifics and heterospecifics (Eublepharis macularius) was tested. The main goal was to determine whether adults tolerate juveniles generally or whether they recognize juveniles conspecifics. To support the hypothesis of the adults' tolerance of juveniles the eggs of the adult geckos living in pair were left in their terrarium until the hatching of the juvenile. Further, the reaction of adult geckos to the presence of a E. macularius juvenile (small), admitted into the terrarium, was tested. The thesis is focused on comparison of several ways of the calculation of thermal and moisture fields in wood containing bound water during drying and their comparison with commonly used standards for wood drying processes. Each of the four models presents different way of the unsteady-state calculation of the coupled thermal and moisture field in wood. The first model describes linear simulation, other three models present nonlinear simulation using material coefficients dependent on temperature and moisture content, differing in the method of the thermodiffusion (Soret effect) coefficient settings. The aim of the thesis is to establish the influence of Soret effect on the wood drying process and to describe the difference between commonly used presumption of this process and its presumption given by the unsteady-state computation of the coupled thermal and moisture fields in wood.
The research of wooden dowel-type connectors

The carpentry joints, some of them secured by wooden connectors, are part of historical timber roof structures. Originally, a wooden dowel rather secured the position of timber elements in a joint than transferring loads (e.g. dovetail joints). But in some joints it can also transfer the forces between the structural members, therefore its behaviour influences the stiffness and load-bearing capacity of the whole structure directly. This type of connectors can be used nowadays as well; while reconstructions, a new timber building construction, or manufacturing individual structural timber elements (e.g. panels). Current technical standards do not prescribe a suitable computing procedure for the joints with wooden connectors. Moreover, a complex failure criteria for various fibre directions are missing. The article introduces an ongoing project, whose ambition is to cover the knowledge gap.
