Annotated translation of the text of the historical documentary: Vitaly Shentalinsky, Donos na Sokrata, Moskva 2009 (selected part - Marina, Ariadna, Sergey. Mukha v pautine)

The aim of this Bachelor's Thesis is to present annotated translation of historical- documentary text. In this case, it is a selected part from one chapter of the book "Donos na Sokrata" by Vitalij Shentalinskij. In the commentary attention was paid not only to problems at various language levels, but also to cultural and the other influences. The theoretical part, which is based on Czech and Slovakian theoretical works of Jiří Levý and Anton Popovič, could also help to facilitate deeper understanding the role of the translator and alternative ways of how the translator can deduce a solution to particular translation problems. A comparative analysis of the latest Czech translation of the novel Idiot by F. M. Dostoevsky

This thesis explores the latest Czech translation of the novel The Idiot by F. M. Dostojevky rendered by Libor Dvořák (2020). This translation is compared with the previous published translations from three Czech translators: Stanislav Minařík (2014), Bohumil Mathesius (2007) and Tereza Silbernáglová (2005). The main purpose of this thesis is to find out whether the translation by Libor Dvořák brings innovations in comparison with previous published works and to emphasize how it differs from the existing translations. The analysis and comparison of the newest translation is leading to the conclusion that the new Czech version of F. M. Dostoevsky's novel The Idiot was beneficial, especially in terms of transfering of linguistic and artistic values of the original to the Czech readers.

This bachelor thesis provides an annotated translation of selected chapters from the book Nepridumannaia istoriia russkoy kukhni (Pavel Siutkin & Olga Siutkina, 2011). It is a popular science publication on the history of Russian cuisine. The translation focuses on the chapters "Kazan - bral, Аstrakhan - bral…" and Таk chto zhe takoye russkaia kukhnia? The thesis consists of two main parts - the translation and the expert annotation. The second part contains a translation analysis of the source text, a description of the translation procedures and an analysis of specific translation problems including their solutions. The annotation is based both on theoretical knowledge and on practical examples from the text.

Čapek's Apocryphal Tales in Russian Translations

The thesis deals with a comparative analysis of existing Russian translations of selected apocrypha of Karel Čapek with religious themes. In the theoretical part, the thesis focuses on the background of the creation of Čapek's apocrypha, its description and the position of the Apocryphal Tales in the context of the author's work. It also presents a description of the literary apocrypha as the genre and its tradition in Czech and Russian literature. For the purpose of evaluating Russian translations, this thesis focuses on the topic of Russian religiosity, its history and more precisely how Orthodox religiosity as a cultural reality is reflected in literature. The practical part deals with the comparative analysis of the translations of Čapek's apocrypha Holy Night by Faina Grimberg, Viktoriya Kamenskaya and Oleg Malevich, and Martha and Mary by Natalya Arosyeva. The comparative analysis is preceded by a characteristic of each of the selected apocrypha from the thematic and linguistic point of view. The practical part includes an attempt to reconstruct the translation tendencies and to evaluate the compared Russian translations on the basis of the analysis of individual translation solutions. The essays of Marina Tsvetaeva in Czech translations

Czech translations of six essays by Marina Tsvetaeva that focus on poetry writing and on the work of fellow-poets were examined, following a detailed analysis of Tsvetaeva's style and the historical and biographical context of her prose. The evaluation criteria for the translations were: accuracy in reproducing the author's meaning, the ability to distinguish the characteristic features of Tsveateva's style from the systemic features of Russian and the translators' creative input in reproducing especially the lexical and euphonic intricacies of the original. In addition to providing a general overview of translation problems posed by the author's style the work attempted to trace differences between the approaches of two translators of Tsvetaeva's princi pal essays on art: Jana Štroblová (Art in the Light oj Conscience) and Jan Zábrana (Poet and Time, The Epic and Lyric ofContemporary Russia). All Czech translations were found seriously lacking in accuracy; the errors in the reproduction of meaning are partly due to the idiosyncrasies of Tsvetaeva's style (e.g. punctuation), but sometimes to sheer carelessness. Diploma thesis Inner Emigration of Jan Zábrana and Osip Mandelstam examines the relationship between a poet (Osip Mandelstam) and his translator who is also a poet (Jan Zábrana). It shows connections between their life experiences, and the way these moments affected their own poetics. Simultaneously, it finds out if and to which degree Mandelstam- poet influenced the poetry of Jan Zábrana. Pavlik Morozov and his role in the communist education of soviet youth

Tématem mé bakalářské práce je ,,Pavlík Morozov a jeho role v komunistické výchově sovětské mládeže". Jejím cílem je analýza mýtu postavy Pavlíka Morozova, která v sovětském období sloužila jako vzor pro výchovu "nového sovětského člověka", v konfrontaci se skutečností. V druhé kapitole, nazvané Pavlík jako vzor sovětských dětí, se budu věnovat významu a vnímání Pavlíka Morozova, který udal svého vlastního otce. Tímto činem dokázal, že si cení více zájmů státu\ než své vlastní rodiny. Díky svému hrdinskému činu se stal vzorem několika generací sovětských dětí. Třetí kapitola objasňuje důvody a popisuje způsoby tvorby mýtu o Pavlíkovi. Sovětská vláda ponechala pouze kostru jeho skutečného životního příběhu, zbytek si dotvořila podle svých potřeb. Je zde uvedeno několik příkladů prostředků, jimiž se snažila socialistická propaganda dostat do podvědomí dětí ( vzor chování, který měly následovat. Ve čtvrté kapitole jsou uvedeny tři odlišné verze Pavlíkova příběhu. Verze spisovatele Jurije Družnikova podrobně rozebírá jednotlivá fakta uváděná v oficiální verzi a na základě důkazů dokládá jejich smyšlenost či popírá jejich pravdivost. Pátá kapitola se zabývá fenoménem udavačství, kterého se stal Pavlík Morozov symbolem. Udávání se stalo každodenním jevem, při kterém docházelo až k absurdním situacím. ~...

Songs of Vladimir Vysotski in Czech translations

This thesis analyzes three Vladimir Vysotski's songs (Песня о друге; Песенка ни про что, или Что случилось в Африке; Песенка о переселении душ) in Czech translations by Jana Moravcová, Milan Dvořák and Jaromír Nohavica. In the first part of the thesis, we provide a characteristic of the genre known as author song, a brief biography of the author and a description of distinctive aspects of his work. We also outline Vysotski's picture in the Czech environment and briefly introduce Czech translators. In the second part of this thesis, the translations are submitted to critical translatological analysis with particular emphasis on translation of semantic units, the overall translators' interpretation and rhythmic qualities. Explicitation and translator's style

The aim of the thesis was to explore the role of explicitation as a potential parameter of individual literary translator's style, on the material of a parallel corpus of texts compiled for this purpose and covering the work of two translators along the temporal axis. The empirical study the results of which are presented in the thesis was based on the assumption that literary translators, too, are characterized by individual styles, i.e. regularities of their translation decisions typical of their work and distinguishing them from other translators (see e.g. Baker 2000). Another assumption was that explicitation, as a phenomenon studied so far especially as a potential translation universal, has also individual aspects, i.e. that by comparing the explicitation behaviours of several translators components of that behaviour contributing towards individual translator's style can be identified. Either of the two translators being compared, Radoslav Nenadál and Antonín Přidal, was represented in the corpus by 5,000-word samples of parallel text, taken from 9 translations of long literary fiction, published in the course of their translator's careers.
