New Electrolytes for Modern Electrochemical Applications

1. Introduction Electrochemical and mechanical properties of polymer gel electrolýes have been intensively investigated since the introduction ofthe 1" generation of solid polyrrner electrolýes by M.Armand [1]. Their electrochemical application includes secondary lithium batteries, supercapacitors, chemical sensors and electrochromic devices. Wide application of the gel polyrner electrolytes is allowed due to the hrgher ionic conductivity compared with solid polyrner electrolýes and due to the higher safety properties in comparison with common liquid electrolytes. Organic methacrylate-based polymers are perspective materials for their low toxicity both of monomer and polymer forrn, when methyl methacrylate (MMA) is widely used in the dental praxis. Poly(methyl methacrylate) PMMA was used in electrochemistry for the frst time by Iijíma [2] and than either pure or in different polymer modifications including varlous copolymers [3, 4]. Aprotic solvents like sulpholane, organic carbonates, N,N- dimethylformamide, and formamide are usually incorporated in the polymer structure to form ternary electrolýe polymer-solvent-salt. Amperometric Solid-State NO2 Sensor with Ionic Liquid-Polymer Electrolyte

A new ionic liquid-polymer electrolyte was successfully tested in the planar amperometric solid-state sensor sensitive towards nitrogen dioxide. The electrolyte consists of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIPF6) and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMEMA) in the ratio 57:43 mol. %. The analyte, gaseous nitrogen dioxide in air, was determined using the electrochemical reduction at900 mV vs. Pt/air on gold minigrid indicating electrode with Pt/air as a reference electrode. Dependency of sensor sensitivity on the indicating electrode area and relative humidity was determined. The sensor response is linear in the NO2 concentration range 0.3 1.1 ppm and is reproducible and long-term stable.
Ion liquids for safer lithium-ion batteries - aluminium corrosion in TFSI- based ILs

Elektrolyty pro lithno-iontové baterie pracující při vyšších teplotách

Methacrylate-based polymer electrolytes with lithium perchlorate or lithium bis(oxalato)borate were prepared and studied as perspective materials for lithium-ion batteries operating at elevated temperatures (70 – 80 °C) and exibiting higher electrochemical and chemical stability towards oxidation. The accesible potential window on gold electrode was found to be 4.9 – 5.1 V vs. Li/Li+. The ionic conductivity at 70 °C is 1.9 – 2.4 mS/cm.

Nanostructured (mesoporous) nickel-nickel oxide was prepared from the medium of the lyotropic liquid crystals. The electrochemical properties of the material deposited in thin layers were studied, especially the hydrogen oxidation reaction. The catalyst exhibits remarkable catalytic activity.

New single-ion conducting electrolytes based on methacrylates were prepared using direct, radically initiated polymerisation: copolymers of methacrylic acid (MA) or lithium methacrylate (LiMA) with 2-ethoxyethyl methacrylate (EOEMA) and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (EGMEMA) as pure cationically conducting Li+ or H+ electrolytes and covalently bonded carboxylic group. For the conductivity improvement, a set of electrolytes with embedded aprotic solvent (propylene carbonate PC or N,N-dimethylformamide DMF) was prepared.
Elektrochemické redoxní procesy polymerních elektrolytech na bázi methakrylátů – studie na mikroelektrodě

In our recent project we have investigated electrochemical behaviour of ferrocene in liquid and polymer aprotic electrolytes using various electrochemical methods. The apparent diffusion coefficients were determined for propylene carbonate and poly(ethyl methacrylate)-propylene carbonate medium. Thank to optimised electrolyte composition, the polymerisation lowers the mobility of ferrocene only by 15 – 50 times contrary to previously studied PMMA-PC (Superacryl-based) electrolytes, where approx. three order decrease of diffusion coefficients was found.

Protonově vodivé polymerní elektrolyty na bázi methakrylátů

New, proton conductive electrolytes based on methacrylates and phosphoric acid were prepared. These aprotic electrolytes exhibit conductivity up to 0.1 mS/cm and they were also characterised using voltammetrical and thermogravimetrical methods.
