Out of Scope? Open science monitoring and grey literature

The paper will assess if and how the EU and the French Open Science Monitors provide qualitative and quantitative data on grey literature such as conference papers, theses and dissertations, reports, working papers or preprints. How is grey literature included in their data sources, in the methodology and indicators, in published surveys and case studies? The authors will contact the Monitor project teams to learn more about their future projects and if they intend to give more importance to the non-commercial part of academic communication.

Jsou starší vysokoškolské kvalifikační práce skutečně „šedé“? Pár komentářů k dědictví vědy a k šedé literatuře

Grey literature is often described as unpublished material, disseminated outside of commercial channels, not peer-reviewed and with limited referencing of information. Especially in the field of digitization projects, the term is also applied for older material and special collections. The objective of the paper is to analyse the meaning of “grey scientific heritage” and, based on empirical and conceptual elements, to contribute to a better understanding of grey literature. Special attention will be paid on older theses and dissertations (OTDs), as a main part of scientific heritage from universities.

Dizertace a výzkumná data

What do we know about data behaviours and needs of PhD students, especially in social sciences and humanities? How can academic libraries improve the research data management (RDM) of PhD students? How can they contribute to curation, preservation and sharing of research data related to electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs)? Which are realistic goals? The workshop will provide an introduction and overview of the field and help to better understand the challenge of RDM for academic libraries. It will describe the different RDM projects on the social sciences and humanities campus of the University of Lille, in particular the PhD training program and the development of a RDM infrastructure for the storage, preservation and sharing of research data related to ETDs. A large part of the workshop will be reserved for the discussion of the participants’ local initiatives, projects and questions.
