Czech Amazons: The Maiden's War in art of the 19th century.

This bachelor thesis focuses on artistic works derived from the Czech national legend "The Maidens' War" and related themes such as Amazons and female warriors within the artistic period of the 19th century. The thesis includes an analysis of the most significant contemporary and historical literary sources that inspired the authors of these artistic works. Furthermore, the thesis provides a catalog listing of works depicting the theme of the Maidens' War, with descriptions and analyses of specific examples of paintings or sculptures. The thesis will explore parallels with the ancient Amazons and their literary interpretations, which serve as prototypes for the story from Czech mythology. The thesis also addresses the position and perception of women in the contemporary Czech society of the 19th century, reflecting on the figure of the female warrior and the female muse in society and culture of the 19th century. The goal of the thesis is to present the repertoire of Czech art from the 19th century focusing on the theme of the Maidens' War and, based on cultural and social aspects, evaluate the popularity of depicting this theme and the interrelationships between the depicted works and other artistic forms such as literature, theater, and music. Significance of the Forum '88. Possibilities of Art in Space

The bachelor thesis deals with the unofficial exhibition Forum '88 with the subtitle Possibilities of Art in Space, which took place in the autumn of 1988 in hall 11 of former slaughterhouses and greengrocers in the area of the Prague Market. Thirty-four Czech and Slovak artists of the middle and older generations presented their installations, objects and environmental art, many of which were created specifically for this space and for this particular event. It summarizes the findings from the beginning of thinking about the exhibition, its organization, preparation, creation and course. Also of interest is the contemporary reflection, which was very lively on the art scene after its opening and provoked various discussions. A significant part is devoted to the generational tension of the time, which escalated in the second half of the 1980s and escalated into a generational conflict, which had been unnaturally suppressed in the previous decade. Following this, the formation of artistic generational groups is also interesting. These facts will explain the absence of the distinctive youngest generation of Tvrdohlaví (Hardheads) from the above- mentioned exhibition. The Battle of Abukir by Antoine-Jean Gros and her "second life".

Chromolithographic reproduction experienced a significant boom during the 19th century, both domestically and internationally. It gained considerable popularity, particularly in the realms of advertising and posters, thanks to its technique. Color lithography, specifically the four-color process, was frequently used, especially for reproducing oil paintings, representing a high technique of chromolithography. An example of this is a specific chromolithograph, printed on canvas, depicting "The Battle of Aboukir" by Antoine-Jean Gros from a private collection. The primary source for understanding successful contemporaries of Gros and the influence of their master, Jacques-Louis David, is Thomas Crown's publication "Emulation: Making Artists For Revolutionary France." A detailed report by Ann Friedman provides information on the origin and creation of the original artwork, based on which the reproduction was made. Discussions on various assumptions regarding the nature of the chromolithograph draw from consultations and perspectives of various art historians. Painter Karel Myslbek (1874-1915)

This diploma thesis deals with the academic painter Karel Myslbek, who is known in the art world for his social work. The work not only maps the artist's distinctive work, which has so far only received marginal attention, but also gives it to the contemporary context. In individual chapters, Myslbek's paintings are compared with the works of domestic and foreign authors. The work also outlines the period's cultural and social background of the time, which had an indisputable influence on many artists. he detailed evaluation of Karel Myslbek's graphic work, which has so far been of little interest of the reluctant public, is also a big value of the work. The thesis concludes with a discussion of the phenomenon of suicide at the beginning of the 20th century, pointing out the stigmatization of this problem on canvases and the fate of painters.

Artists and Photography (Czech Painting and Photography in the 19th and Early 20th Centuries) - Dissertation abstract - Romana Pospíšilová The topic of this dissertation is the multi-layered relationship between painting and photography in Bohemia in the 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly the role of photography as an inspirational material for artists. The invention of photography in 1839 brought about many changes and stimuli in society at the time. Photography contributed to the development of a number of scientific fields, changed the form of illustrated magazines and news, and democratized access to one's own portrait. It also uncompromisingly spoke to the visual arts of the time. For painters, photographs, whether they were their own or were purchased elsewhere, represented a reservoir of visual stimuli. They facilitated the study of nature. They also brought about new impulses in the form of snapshots, chronophotographs and medical images. In the artist's studio, the photograph replaced the absent model, serving as an 'aide- mémoire'. However, it could also be projected directly onto a screen and mechanically copied. The topic of this thesis is the Countess Aloisie Czernin-Morzin's rich patronage of architecture on her lands, such as Maršov or Vrchlabí. It includes building of churches, chapels, industrial buildings, public buildings and conversion of castles. The most notable architects working for her were Josef Schulz, Stephan Tragl and Johann Koch. This thesis will also deal with Aloisie Czernin-Morzin's contribution to the final form of the buildings she funded.

Hugo Ullik (1838-1881) - the landscape painter

Landscape painting experienced the greatest flourishing in our country during the 19th century, when it became an independent artistic discipline and was taught for the first time in specialized ateliers at the Prague Academy of Arts. It achieved great popularity especially under the influence of Maximilian Haushofer, whose landscape school was attended by many adepts of art, including Hugo Ullik. However, this particular author has been largely neglected and his monograph has not been written yet. In addition to literature, the primary source of information will be archival records, as well as research of institutional collections, castle and chateau picture galleries and, last but not least, auction catalogues. I will attempt to observe the main developmental stages of Ullik's work, including landscape paintings, illustrations and scenographic designs, along side the main personalities who most influenced his artistic expression. His exhibition activity and participation in various artistic organizations, will not be omitted. F. Kupka and his letters to V. Hynais

This bachelor thesis, named F. Kupka and his letters to V. Hynais deals with mutual correspondence between František Kupka and Vojtěch Hynais. Their letters are currently placed in the National Gallery Archive in Prague. Dealing with this correspondence required translation from French to Czech and critical analysis of the text in comparison to already published studies. Many of the currently known information concerning Kupka has been confirmed while some new facts have also been uncovered. Although it may have seemed formal at first sight, the relationship between the two artists was truly warm. They shared not only their artistic points of view but also the joys and sorrows of their family lives. They often included magazine articles dealing with art and the current situation in the Czech and French art world into their letters. Kupka often mention his work, mainly book illustration, and expressed his longing for painting. His correspondence reassures us of his punctual preparation for each art project and also sometimes helps withs its dating. The reader is also confronted with Kupka's successes and failures with his search for a new artistic expression, although this can only be found in slight indications, not in connection to concrete paintings. The work discribes decoration of Prague's tenement houses in the last third of the XIX.Century and the beginning of XX.Century. In the first instance it addresses questions of decoration at general level, the character and disposition of decorative elements on houses facades. Concisely it considers the materials and techniques used in the decoration of houses and it discusses usual methods of compositional solutions and disposition of decoration. Hereafter this work summarises in a brief survey the subjects of decoration in the reviewed period. Individual decorative elements may have decorative sense; otherwhile they express semantic or ideological meaning.

Stanislav Lolek (1873-1936)

The aim of this work is to give a reader the most compact view of life and production of the artist Stanislav Lolek (1873 - 1936) as well as to chart the appearance of his artwork in Czech and Moravian museums and galleries. Observation of his career and influence, that shaped his artistic growth, should help reader to understand the production of this artist in connection to the other contemporary artists specialized in landscape-painting . Stanislav Lolek was through his journey of finding his own artistic interpretation mostly influenced by following factors. Firstly, Lolek was personally very attached to nature and it's colours. Secondly, he was considerably inspired by metodologicaly consistent art tuition from Julius Ma ák as well as he was impressed with the whole artistic atmosphere of the time. In addition, the inspiration and influence came also from the French impressionism. Lolek finally settled captivated by the specific nature of the region Slovácko. All the impulses mentioned below were merged together by Lolek into a very interesting synthetis. Above all, he transformed the influence of impressionism into his specific interpretation.
