Methods for monitoring inter-library loans at selected libraries in Czech Republic

Metody sledování prezenčních výpůjček ve vybraných knihovnách v České republice Michaela Chržová Abstrakt (anglicky) The thesis is focused on the issue of monitoring inter-library loans with examples of particular libraries. This thesis commences with a definition of the in-house use and other basic terms and places them in the context of providing library loan services, the organization of library collections and the accessibility of documents in libraries. A separate chapter discusses the issue of feedback in libraries. This section describes the principle of feedback and describes the methods used and suitable for monitoring inter-library loans. Part is also devoted to the research that had been held in the past in the Czech Republic and abroad. The practical part deals with the survey of monitoring inter-library loans at libraries in the Czech Republic that was conducted via a questionnaire. Results are evaluated and described in this thesis. Examples of specific libraries show ways how to use data collected by monitoring in-house use in the acquisition of documents, development and organization of library collections. The result of this thesis is a description of methods for monitoring inter- library loans at selected libraries in the Czech Republic.

ARCLib – LTP Solution for Libraries

The presentation introduces project ARCLib. The project aims to create complex open source Long Term Preservation solution for libraries. ARCLib ensures long term preservation of digital data according OAIS guidelines and provides a free alternative to commercial software solutions. ARCLib is designed as a solution for all types of memory institutions – museums, galleries and archives. As part of the project two methodical guidelines were created – Methodology for logical preservation of digital data and Methodology for bit preservation.

The Methodology for Logical Preservation of Digital Data presents procedures for long term digital preservation in open source software ARCLib. It focuses mainly on data from library collections. Its goal is to describe a life cycle of stored data, give a definition of preservation process, and propose procedures relevant for preservation of digital data. The Methodology specifies steps necessary for realization of the goal of long term digital preservation on logical level in compliance with recommended international standards ČSN ISO 14721 and ČSN ISO 16363. The Methodology is based on the standards and presents their use in concrete system for long term preservation. The methodology is divided into a general and a specific part, also defining a procedure for self-audit.

From the dissemination of electronic theses and dissertations to their long-term archiving

Thesis and dissertations are historical archival materials and need to be treated as such. In 2016 Archive of Charles University initiated a change to their policy regarding thesis submission. Emphasis was placed on usage of formats suitable for long term preservation (especially PDF/A). This presentation primarily focuses on historical development of the Charles University thesis collection (including an analysis of thesis formats submitted from 2006–2016), description of the current submission policy, and integration into the submission process.

Research Data Analysis Based on the Collection of Dissertation Theses of Charles University in Prague with Regard to Long-term Digital Preservation

This dissertation thesis focuses on research data and their use in academics from the point of view of long-term preservation. It maps usage of research data at Charles University in Prague, analyses them and lays the foundation for further research. The first part of the text focuses on the theory of long term preservation and describes the most relevant concepts regarding users, storage and structure of research data. The second part is devoted directly to research data. It consists of definition of research data, the short explanation of their importance and sources, and the model of their lifecycle. The pivotal part of the thesis is the description and the results of the research itself. The research was conducted during the year 2015 and was based on a sample of dissertation theses from the collections of Charles University in Prague. Collected data were analysed by the methods of content analysis and grounded theory. Results are presented in two main parts - content analysis results with regard to differences among science, social science and humanities, and qualitative analysis results. Web 2.0 applications for social reading

This thesis is dedicated to Web 2.0 applications for social reading. The aim is to describe and compare three book social networks and on the basis of established facts recommend them to different types of readers. The first three chapters discuss terms important to understand the subject of the thesis and relations between them, the opportunities provided to network users and their mutual comparison. The fourth chapter is the evaluation. It contains list of positive and negative characteristics of each network. On the basis of established facts, it recommends a particular network to specific group of users. Those users are divided into two groups in terms of knowledge of English language and the preferred type of literature.

Folksonomies and possibilities of their usage with regard to needs of academic

The Thesis is focused on systems using folksonomy - the knowledge organization based on collective intelligence. The theoretical introduction to the problem includes the overview of the used terminology. Current folksonomic systems are reviewed and described. The Thesis is focused especially on social bookmarking systems, social cataloging systems and systems for social citations. Features of user interfaces are described and evaluated with the emphasis on indexing, record management and retrieval. In the last part, the advantages and disadvantages of folksonomies are considered, especially within the academic background.
