Aboveground litterfall fluxes of selected elements in central European temperate forest

5 Abstract Aboveground litterfall is the most important intrasystem flow in the temperate forest ecosystem. It is also the largest input flux to the soil surface for most of the macronutrients (N, P, Ca, Mg, K). However, under Central European conditions, studies on the magnitude of this flux in relation to elemental stocks are lacking. GEOMON Small Forest Catchment Network is used to investigate long-term trends in nutrient cycles in temperate forests of Central Europe and the human influence on them. As part of this network aboveground litterfall collectors were placed in 14 catchments at a total of 19 sites at the end of 2019. Litterfall was then collected bimonthly, weighed and sorted into different fractions. These fractions were analyzed to determine the concentration of the elements of interest. From these values, the fluxes of the elements in the aboveground litterfall were calculated. The observed values were compared with the characteristics of the individual sites and the element budgets in the catchments. The monitored elements can be ranked according to the size of the flux of the element through the aboveground litterfall in relation to other inputs of that element to the soil as follows: C, P, N, Ca, Mg and K. CARBON AND NITROGEN POOLS AND FLUXES OF TWO FOREST ECOSYSTEMS IN THE ORE MOUNTAINS With increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations, forest ecosystems are considered for their sequestration ability. However, there are differences between coniferous and deciduous tree species in their impact on the carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) fluxes within forest ecosystems, which influence soil carbon and nitrogen pools. In natural beech and monoculture spruce stands on research sites of Czech Geological Survey in the Ore Mountains, C and N fluxes and pools were investigated. There were investigated ecosystem inputs (C, N, in throughfall, litterfall) as well as outputs (soil respiration, concentrations of C, N in seepage water discharge). Further, C and N pools of living biomass and soils were determined. Throughfall DOC was significantly higher in the spruce stand, on the other hand litterfall C flux showed the opposite relationship. At output, DOC, DON and NH4 + discharge fluxes from O horizon were significantly higher in the spruce stand whereas in the beech stand higher NO3 - flux from mineral soil was recorded. Effects of soil alteration on nitrogen and carbon cycling

Forest ecosystems are facing changing environmental conditions induced by anthropogenic pressures, including atmospheric deposition. Elevated sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) depositions have led to changes in forest soil conditions, inducing acidification and N eutrophication. However, the consequences of atmospheric deposition for the functioning of forest ecosystems may be tree species specific. To assess the effects of S and N inputs on soil functioning of two forest stands, a soil chemistry manipulation experiment took place in two adjacent forest stands - Norway spruce (Picea abies) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica) - in the Ore Mts. Over six years, separated and combined additions of S and N compounds (50 kg ∙ha-1 ∙year-1 ) were added to experimental plots in both stands to mimic enhanced atmospheric deposition. The aim of this research was to compare and investigate the soil C and N stocks and fluxes, and their responses in relation to acid and N treatments. We found that under ambient conditions, the beech stand contained more C and N in both the forest floor and the mineral soil compared to the spruce stand. Research on inflence of SO2 and NOx on spruce growth

Radial growth of Norway spruce (Picea abies) in Krušné and Jizerské Mts.responded qiuckly on the decline of SO2 and NOx emissions and S deposition. At the end of 1990´s it was equal to growh measured before the period of high emissions. The best correlation was founded with ambient SO2 concentrations, then with S atmosperic deposion and less important correlation was found with soil chemistry as it is correlated with deposition levels. At present there is no evidence of influence of SO2 and NOX on decline of radial growht. Observed decline in last decade is most probably attributed to climatic conditions.
Tree species influence on soil acidification: long-term trends and modeling

Forest ecosystems belong to the part of environment most affected by the anthropogenic acidification. The structure of Central European forests was historically converted mostly into the Norway spruce monocultures. Such a forests received elevated acidic deposition since 1950s, from which large parts of mountain forests were killed by air pollution in 1970s and 1980s. After reduction of acidic deposition the forest soils were significantly delayed in chemical recovery compared to stream chemistry (Alewell et al., 2000). In this thesis we focused on long-term changes in soil chemistry at highly polluted area of Ore Mts., with particular interest in the tree species influence on soil acidification. The presented results including measurements of biogeochemical cycles within forest ecosystem at the Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.]) stand in the period 1992-2005 and at the European beech (Fagus sylvatica [L.]) stand between 2003-2005. The desorption of previously stored sulfur and the decrease of Ca deposition are the main factors controlling the recovery of soil solution at spruce stand. The reduction in Ca availability resulted in lower uptake by tree assimilatory tissues, measured as concentration in needles.
