Residents' Perceptions of Gentrification and Related Changes: a Study of Smíchov and Karlín
Columby, Nikola ; Ouředníček, Martin (advisor) ; Kubeš, Jan (referee)
Gentrification is an urban process gone global with many permutations and local specifics. This master's thesis analyses how residents are perceiving gentrification in rapidly developing, post- industrial, inner-city neighbourhoods of Prague - Smíchov and Karlín. The thesis is based on the concept of gentrification as planetary phenomenon that is anchored in a post-socialist context of contemporary Prague. The integral process of displacement is understood as direct but also symbolic, as an attachment to one's neighbourhood. Perception, an individual's filter of understanding and dealing with the world, is used to capture nuances, experiences, and feelings. Using interviews, the thesis seeks to answer the following questions using the underutilized perceptions of regular citizens. How are residents perceiving gentrification and the related changes? Where are residents placing gentrification? Are these findings the same in Smíchov and Karlín or are there differences in the perceptions? Gentrification and displacement are palpable urban processes that the respondents perceive as having changed the neighbourhoods in an impactful way. Karlín is seen as gentrified, whereas in Smíchov the situation is more nuanced. The group most clearly identified as being displaced are the Roma. The gentrifiers are...
Migration within the Prague Urban Region depending on the age structure
Bártlová, Tereza ; Ouředníček, Martin (advisor) ; Podhorská, Jana (referee)
Migration within the Prague Urban Region depending on the age structure Abstract The Prague Urban Region is one of the most dynamically developing regions in the Czech Republic. The migration of the population, which has increased since the 1990s, has a great importance for the development of Prague's hinterland. The aim of this work is to describe and evaluate the changes of the age structure of the Prague Urban Region inhabitants and to describe the migration development during the selected period. The first part of this thesis deals with migration, its division and connection with the life cycle. The second part is focused on the development of the population and its transformation in the Prague Urban Region. The age structure comparing the development of the population in three different periods is also included. The core part of the work analyzes internal and foreign migration in the Prague's hinterland and the relationship of migration with the natural increase comparing development in the Prague Urban Region with the rest of Czechia. For this, individual anonymized data was used in the administration of the Czech Statistical Office. The last part of the work evaluates the migration of generation Y and the migration of seniors in the Prague's hinterland which are both important for the development of...
Slovak population of Prague
Martinák, Matej ; Ouředníček, Martin (advisor) ; Svoboda, Peter (referee)
Despite its large size and historically specific position, the Slovak population of Prague and Czechia remains relatively understudied. The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to review the history and the present of Slovaks in Prague in terms of their number and statistical records, demographic and social structure, and distribution within the city. By analyzing current and historical statistical data, an overview of the evolution of Slovak migration to Prague and of the number of Slovaks in Prague has been conducted and problems regarding data records have been clarified. Based on detailed data from the Czech statistical office an overview of the demographic and social structure of Slovaks in Prague and comparison with some relevant populations was carried out. The level of concentration was analyzed by cartographic outputs. By its broad conception of the topic, the bachelor thesis broadens the existing knowledge about one of the largest ethnic groups in the capital of Czechia. Keywords: Slovaks; Prague; urban processes; migration; social structure; spatial distribution
Metropolization processes in the Bratislava metropolitan region
Majerík, Alexander ; Kebza, Martin (advisor) ; Ouředníček, Martin (referee)
This bachelor's thesis focuses on metropolization processes, which are investigated in the territory of the Bratislava metropolitan region. In the era of globalization, metropolises become an interesting object of observation, as their development is the most significant. However, their hinterland should not be forgotten, which is also dynamically changing thanks to the central city. The analytical part of this thesis will be focused primarily on the transformation of Bratislava's hinterland, secondarily on the historical development of Bratislava as a metropolis. The result of this thesis is an analysis of the processes of metropolization in the Bratislava metropolitan region based on selected indicators. Keywords: metropolization, metropolitan region, metropolis, Bratislava
Lima - The Problems of Metropolitan Growth
Rataj, Martin ; Janský, Bohumír (advisor) ; Ouředníček, Martin (referee) ; Kouba, Karel (referee)
The dissertation deals with the situation of the suburban settlements (barriadas or pueblos jóvenes) on the periphery of the Peruvian capital Lima in context with the growth of the metropolis, accompanied by a number of chronic problems including a high crime rate, unsatisfactory conditions of living and weak public administration. By means of a sociological survey, the dissertation seeks answers to the questions related to individual aspects of the life in barriadas, and subsequently interprets them with regard to the development in the recent decades and the available relevant literature. It tries to seek points of intersection between various phenomena and find their common context by bridging the specific viewpoints of sociology, urbanism, history and ecology. At the same time, it ponders - also with regard to the experience from other cities in the region - about the future prospects.
Development of the functional autonomy of municipalities in the Prague urban region during the period 1990-2019
Štrba, Šimon ; Ouředníček, Martin (advisor) ; Šimon, Martin (referee)
5 ABSTRACT The thesis investigates the development of the functional autonomy of municipalities in the Prague hinterland in the period 1991-2020. The dynamic population growth of the Prague hinterland, mainly fuelled by residential suburbanization, led to the strengthening of centripetal movements to work and school at the beginning of the transformation. In the later stages of the study period, this relationship begins to change in favour of a more functionally independent hinterland. The functional autonomy of the municipalities has been monitored at three levels: the deconcentration of employment opportunities in social and commercial services, the development of educational infrastructure, medical and retail amenities, and the evolution of commuting flows between Prague and its hinterland. Both the increase in employment opportunities in social and commercial services and the development of basic amenities point to a significant increase in the functional autonomy of settlements in the hinterland of Prague. However, in terms of work and school commuting, hinterland settlements are still strongly interconnected with the core. At the same time, however, work commuting from the core to the hinterland has increased, suggesting a persistent mismatch between the location of work and home of urban region...
Daily mobility and socio-economic aspects of regions and their impact on the functional spatial organization of society
Nemeškal, Jiří ; Ouředníček, Martin (advisor) ; Šveda, Martin (referee) ; Mulíček, Ondřej (referee)
Population mobility is a key urban shaping element that shows the functional relationships of the urban environment through the generalization of individual movement. The mutual process whereby the structure of the city determines mobility and is subsequently modelled by it is also important for understanding processes in the suburban or metropolitan zone. The dynamics of this process not only in the Czech environment is mainly due to the developing suburbanization, which in recent decades has been attributed a leading role in the visual and functional transformation of the landscape. In addition to suburbanization, which can be perceived as a process within the urban space, today's society and economy are also influenced by two significant external forces - globalization and technological progress. Technological progress is both materialised in a wide range of physical devices and innovations and manifested in the development of a parallel digital world. Its by-product over the last two decades is the digital footprint. In its broadest sense, it can be defined as a record of activity and interactions in time, space and context. One example of a society's digital footprint is the information extracted about the geographical movement of the population from mobile phone data. The potential of this...
Development of Prague's Housing Estates: Ageing and Functional Use
Worschová, Markéta ; Ouředníček, Martin (advisor) ; Machala, Branislav (referee)
There lives currently one third of population in the post-socialist housing estates in the Czech Republic. Because of many problems that accompany the estates, many scientific studies deal with the topic. In my study, I focus on analysis of the age structure changes in Prague housing estates and investigate whether it corresponds to the level of the functional use. The analytical part is divided into two sections. The first one is the analysis of the age structure based on the statistical data. The second section is an assessment of the level of the use in Prague housing estates through a questionnaire survey in a selected estate. In principle, it was confirmed that the Prague housing estates really have been aging and this trend affects to some extent functional use of the locality. It is important to solve the needs of estates individually so that the changes were effective. Based on the analysis the conclusion is that the Prague housing estates have good prospects for the future. Key words: Prague; housing estates; ageing; functional use
