Teaching Mathematics using the CLIL method
Vrbíková, Helena ; Novotná, Jarmila (advisor) ; Kvasz, Ladislav (referee)
The thesis deals with preparation of teaching materials for teaching mathematics using the CLIL method. The chosen topic is statistics at lower secondary level. The thesis is divided into several chapters, first three chapters are more theoretically oriented and the last four chapters deal with the actual preparation and use of teaching materials for the chosen topic. The theoretical part of this theses introduces the CLIL method and several difficulties when using it, as well as suggestions for overcoming them successfully. Next, reasons for the choice of a particular topic in mathematics are given and the choice of English as the secondary language that is taught is justified. Lastly, teaching targets are set in accordance with the basic principles of this method both in mathematics and English as a second language. The specifics of the topic in question are carefully chosen while observing the current curriculum. The practical part of this theses focuses in detail on piloting the use of typically CLIL activities. The conclusions drawn from this first experiment are then used when preparing the actual materials for teaching statistics. The prepared materials are then presented and annotated with explanations for use by other teachers and results of their use in a classroom during the second...
Relations and their applications
Čulíková, Markéta ; Novotná, Jarmila (advisor) ; Zamboj, Michal (referee)
The thesis deals with relations and their applications. The first chapter summarizes the introductory theoretical knowledge that is necessary for understanding the topic relations: an element, set, ordered pairs, Cartesian Product. The important definitions are introduced for all of these concepts and the related information is summarized within this chapter. The second chapter defines the concept of relations and operations on them. It includes various types of graphical representations of relations and their advantages and disadvantages. The concept of relation on a set and the properties of this relation alongside with some special types of relations derived from them are introduced in this chapter. The concepts of function are also defined in this part of the thesis. The third chapter indicates the relations that appear in real life - in relationships and games, in curriculum and puzzles. The properties of those relations are determined and the knowledge of relations and their properties is used to facilitate the solution of logical problems. It also supports gaining deeper understanding of those problems. The thesis includes two groups of tasks. The first one covers elementary tasks related to the topic of sets, ordered pairs, Cartesian Product and relations. The second part is concerned with...
Creation of worksheets for teaching financial mathematics at lower and upper secondary levels
Dolák, Tomáš ; Novotná, Jarmila (advisor) ; Janda, David (referee)
In this thesis, I focus on the creation and application of worksheets for teaching financial mathematics in primary and secondary schools. Not only do these worksheets enhance students' knowledge of financial mathematics, but they also bolster their financial literacy. Furthermore, these tools can be employed to practice a range of skills such as programming, algorithm design, information retrieval, group discussions, and independent problem-solving. A key feature of these worksheets is their structure, which follows the Cornell Notes system. This system emphasizes formulating questions, taking notes, and creating indi- vidual summaries. Additionally, I have incorporated a student-centered self-assessment system into the worksheets, enabling students to track their achievement of the goals set by the worksheets. The main objective of this work is to create worksheets for teaching, and then test these worksheets in the classroom. Another aim is to analyze the students' solutions and propose potential approaches to individual tasks that teachers can implement in their lessons. After the students completed the worksheets, I analyzed their solutions and sub- sequently conducted a questionnaire survey among the pupils to gather further infor- mation. This survey either supported or contradicted my...
Teaching word problems using teaching materials "Comparison"
Hrúzová, Eva ; Vondrová, Naďa (advisor) ; Novotná, Jarmila (referee)
This paper focuses on the implementation of methodological materials based on concept cartoons for teaching word problems at the lower level of secondary school. The theoretical part of the work deals with the description of word problems and their teaching in schools, including the role of the teacher and the constructivist approach. It also addresses the concept of concept cartoons, which is used as the basis for implementing methodological materials. In the practical part, these materials are implemented over five teaching hours in the seventh and eight grades. The results indicate that the implementation of methodological materials using concept cartoons in teaching word problems at the lower secondary school level was succesful, and students evaluated this new teaching approach positively. One of the main benefits of using concept cartoons, based on the experience from teaching experiment, is that they createa non-threatening learning environment where students do not experience the fear of failureThis is because mistakes and difficulties in solving problems are attributed to fictional cartoon character. Additionally, the use of concept cartoons encourages discussion and interaction among students, as there is often more than one correct solution to a given problem. This approach helps to...
Selected parameters influencing the difficulty of word problems
Vokounová, Lenka ; Novotná, Jarmila (advisor) ; Vondrová, Naďa (referee)
This thesis deals with selected parameters influencing the difficulty of word problems and also the student's ability to solve them. The aim of the thesis is to theoretically look into it and practically test some of these parameters from the project of the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic number 16-06134S - Word Problems as a Key to Application and Understanding of Mathematical Concepts and point out the difficulties that mathematics teachers may not perceive at first sight and consider as a problem. The first part of the thesis is devoted to word problems in general. It deals with the importance of word problems in mathematics lessons, classification of word problems. Finally, it deals with the solution of word problems. In the second part there are some parameters influencing the difficulty of word problems. These parameters are selected mainly on the basis of the project of the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic number 16-06134S - Word Problems as a Key to Application and Understanding of Mathematical Concepts and based on own experience in teaching. Some of these parameters I analyzed in mini case studies and my own teaching experience. In the last part of the thesis is my own recommendation for working with word problems. KEYWORDS word problems, parameters influencing the solution of word...
Games - teaching mathematics through the medium of a foreign language
Řehák, Jiří ; Novotná, Jarmila (advisor) ; Kvasz, Ladislav (referee)
This thesis is about a study looking into the viability to use Minecraft as a teaching tool in order to teach basic geometry. Using Minecraft Educational edition and based on principles from Self- Determination theory, two specifically tailored maps were created, one was a review towards area and perimeter, and the other one was directed towards volume, a new concept for them to discover. 15 fifth grade students, 9 boys and 6 girls, participated in this study, they were split between two separate groups that participated in this study. Children were given an assessment test to find out what everyone's level is at. Once completed they received tablets with a custom map and some worksheets to go along with it. Students progressed through the maps at an individual pace, with no time restriction they were free to explore in the direction they wished. When finished the children were tested again for comparison. Results have shown that students have the abilities to intuitively discover how to calculate volume after a quick area and perimeter review. Additionally, very positive responses have been expressed during the entire study with increased attentiveness and complete immersion. Potential uses of such discoveries could help alleviate the current work load that our current school system experiences.

1 ABSTRACT This thesis deals with selected parameters influencing the difficulty of word problems. The aim of the thesis is to identify some parameters that could influence the solution of word problems and show that the connection of mathematics with language makes sense and can point out the difficulties that mathematics teachers do not see in the task. The first part of the thesis is devoted to word problems in general. It deals with the importance of word problems in mathematics lessons, classification of word problems by mathematics and context. Finally, it deals with the solution of word problems. In the second part there are some parameters influencing the difficulty of word problems. Subsequently, the analysis of the influence of selected parameters on selected word problems is carried out on the basis of the project of the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic number 16-06134S - Word Problems as a Key to Application and Understanding of Mathematical Concepts and based on own experience in teaching. In the last part of the thesis is my own recommendation for working with word problems. KEYWORDS word problems, parameters influencing the solution of word problems, solving of word problems
